come on now....we have a stunning list of loose forwards, kinda like england back in the pre world cup campaigns where they had some great ones...floating around

6s
-----
flavell,kaino,j.collins,messam,gibbes

7s
-----
mccaw,blackie,holah,masoe,leo'o,latimer,braid

8s
-----
n.williams,sooialo,tuialii,lauaki,newby,mika,bates

we have got every type of number 8..powerhouse,speedster,athlectic,big hitter, big runner or a combination all....the only type we lack is the one with the authority of our previous legendary 8s..shelford and zz brooke

all the guys ive mentioned above are either former allblacks, current allblacks and ones who have the potential to become allblacks in the short future

how are we gonna keep these guys from going to the deeps of hell in the north?...

Nice observation, will be interesting to see what combination Henry goes for in different games, because as you mentioned, he's got the luxury of very different players in the same positions. Only drawback is that you can't really have 2 out of the 3 being similar types eg 2 bashers and 1 scavenger etc. Best combo I think is COllins, McCaw and Sooialo, basher and 2 scavengers.

Yeah I tend to agree.

Although the guy in the picture below this text was one helluva flanker in his time. Shame his knee blew out every five minutes.

Yep crying shame, my All Blacks dream was over before it began, although am going to make a comeback to the dizzying heights of social rugby, just you wait...

And I'm half as good as the guy to the left in avatar at being an evasive winger, something about running away from men I believe... :P

you guys got a bet on or something?

Just enjoying taking the **** out of him online. :) In all seriousness though, the flankers I like for NZ are:

Collins, McCaw and Lauaki.

And my avatar pic currently is Candyman, or as I call him sometimes: Mandycan !

??? Not that I know of...

Just ****-taking of the higher degree, back to topic...

Is Luaki still injured? Didn't he tear a pec' muscle or something?

Yeah, he is still injured. Just listed him as the best candidate if fit. :toss:

For mine I'd still stick with Collins, McCaw, Sooialo with Lauaki on the bench.

Would be interested to see Flavell put his hand for number 8 (or even lock).
Tuialii, Masoe, Kaino, Messam I think will have a big future in the All Blacks.
You have to feel sorry for guys like Holah, Gibbes, Blackie (still might have a shot at the Black jersey) who just can't (but chould get a spot).

Still for Holah and Gibbes there's the Maori All Blacks... and at the end of the day is something to be proud of

Australia doesn't have anywhere near that depth but we'll be in probably our best position this year since Toutai left with..

Smith, Waugh, Croft, Fava, Lyons, Elsom, Palu, Roe, Doherty Heenan.

Wallaby backrow:

6. Palu 7. Smith 8. Heenan.. with Elsom (can cover second row too) and Waugh on the bench. Or if Connolly wants a specialist second rower, start Elsom at blindside and have Waugh or Palu on the bench.

I think you are exagerating the lists by adding leo'o, latimer, braid messam, gibbes, newby, mika, bates. They are nothing special.

The list of 7's is extremely scary. Especially when you consider Holah is down the list a bit.

My thoughts exactly

6.Collins and Flavell = class

7.McCaw and Masoe = class ......( Holah = was class ,but has been average this year.)

8.Lauaki and So'oialo = class

McCaw and Masoe are the only world class 7's atm, you could add Holah to that list if he can get back to his previous years form.

-----------------------

South Africa

6. Watson,Cronje

7.Burger, Smith

8. Wannenburg,Venter,van Niekerk

Australia

6.Elsom,Heenan

7.Smith,Waugh,Croft

8.Fava,Lyons

As an Englishman I'm jealous though, because we haven't had a world class 7 since Neil Back retired.

And however much you dislike him, you can't deny Back was a fantasically annoying 7 to have around.

I wonder if anyone know a reason to the appaling lack of world class Flankers or backrow in general...
I mean being a kiwi, ppl who i met for the first time here generalises me as a "good" backrow... I am good :P but even without watching me play they just think that way...

THE CHIROPRACTOR101

i didnt exagerate anything...as i stated they either "were" allblacks or "potential" allblacks
there is no mistake about latimer..who was our youngest nz sevens rep remember..he puts on the 7 jersey for 2 games and scores 4 tries

no exageration there he is an awesome talent....they are all special players if they were allblacks or metioned as future ones..all have been

i think the saffers have an even depth in that backrow..they have some freaky big ass loose forwards who can run along side the backs..

the aussies have george smith...he is the man,i love seeing him and mccaw go toe to toe every bledisloe..awesome match up...i dont rate palu...he is nothing special..fava and lyons however are my fav aussie loosies...

if i had to choose a number 8...from any team as my fav..it would chabal...tuffest mo fo rugby player on the planet

Latimer looks like a future star, hopefully he gets more of a chance to play next year......Maybe they can move McCaw to blindside to make room for him.

I reckon Palu is an awesome player, he was probably the Tahs best flanker before he got injured and he made an instant impact when he came on last night.

Palu will be the next Jerry Collins.

potentially...yup...palu is an exciting prospect but he needs to get the f*** away from that league mindset..his tackles too high and with ball carryin he has the tendency of a league forward to run with his shoulders high..rather then down into the tacklers gut like we were taught in skool!

but jerry collins atm is in a class of his own concerning that 6 jersey...he surprises me every week when he duz those slick passes!!!..put him at 8 i reckon

but chabal is my dawg...the world stage needs to see him more..he is the most rugged rugby player ive seen play since buck shelford..and ya know how buck shelford playz tha game...i just love the fact that he duz the basics for a number 8 but 20x better then anyone else...

SaintsFan_Webby
20-05-06, 08:59 AM
Chabal is a good player, but if you watch him every week he isn't actually all that. He has a tendency to disappear in some of the big matches, if the opposition stand up to him he sometimes doesn't want to know.

Destructive when he is on his game though.

i like his game tho..i looovvveeeed the old skool days of zinny and the other traditional international power house looseforwards..guess thats why i favor him..hes rugged as football gets nowaday days..he would be quite destructive on a backrow with either mccaw, collins or george smith, phil waugh

He is an absolute beast when he gets going. Has the looks for it as well.

The only problem, but something which could be aimed at a lot of French players, is his temprement.

Collins, White and Chabal for the biggest hitting back-row ever?
