Kiwi firm turns Jackass into video game
22 May 2006*
By REUBEN SCHWARZ

Jackass, the American TV series featuring young men doing dangerous, disgusting and bizarre stunts, is being made into a video game by a Wellington games studio.

Sidhe Interactive, based in Willis St, is best known for its rugby league games and the puzzle-racing game GripShift for Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld console.

But Jackass: The Game could change all that. The series had a three-year run on MTV and quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

Since being cancelled in 2002, the show has been kept alive in reruns, including on New Zealand music station C4.

A 2002 movie based on the series grossed more than $NZ95 million and a sequel is expected out later this year.

Sidhe expects the new game will be its best-selling title yet, but managing director Mario Wynands said it would have "slapstick violence" rather than blood and gore.

Jackass director Jeff Tremaine helped design the game's levels, which include driving a golf cart wildly across a mini-golf course, rolling down a hill in a garbage can, and a chariot-style race in shopping trolleys.

The TV series attracted widespread criticism that it encouraged young men to imitate its often dangerous stunts.

Mr Wynands said it was possible the game would also become a target of conservatives in the United States too.

Exactly. Everyone they have should be concentrating on not F**king up their next version RL.

I really cant see how this game would be done??! but if it is done well then good on ya!

How about they concentrate on actually finishing the games they already have in development? Like Melbourne Cup Challenge for instance?

They'll half-ass it up. Then they can turn around and say "thats what makes it such a jackass game".

They should just call it Half Ass: The Game

I guess this means the end for RL3. I hope that sidhe realise that the international consumers who buy this wont be nearly as forgiving as league fans.

Agreed. Sure they copped a bit of a roasting here, but Jackass better be an A grade game because with extreme this and extreme that crap being released all over xbox and ps2, they'll get lost in the crowd of Lame Idea City.

its going to be sh*thouse

add a year onto the release date

Sidhes PC clocks say 2005.

If they were gonna make a Jackass game, they should have done it years ago when jackass was popular. Sidhe should stick with RL, it is their biggest regular payday, they hav established a fan base, and they are surely not to far off getting it right, but ALL their time needs to be spent on it if they are going to get it right.Theyll being going down he tubes if they put all their eggs in the jackass basket.

Well sidhe have shown that even if they make a poor league game they'll still sell a lot of them

Exactly, so why switch to jackass, its old news, and if it sucks no one will ever buy it again, not like league.

jinxed_nz

I just ghope they dont make a game as bad as American Chopper the game. I cant believe they let them even release that!

to EVOL - I really would like your sig to be true but, isnt that a bit premature?

sidhe do have over 50 staff now. it is not uncommon for a dev studio to work on more than one title at once. I am fairly certian that a third league game will be made as the first 2 sold quite well.

this game will proabbly sell well too if it is done right. jackass I don't think is dead yet either. there will be demand for this game without doubt.

This will be ****, like RL2. Yay, we can drive a golf cart through a golf course. OH THE EXCITEMENT. As long as I can somehow kick that ****** Steve-O's arse I will probably at least rent it.

The fact SIDHE are doing it kind of shows how much demand there was to make such a game, i'm sure if there was serious demand a deent developer/publisher would've snapped up the rights.

The thing is, they are getting asked by the publishers (the same guys that published Gripshift I think) to develop this game. This means that the publishers believe there is a market, and that Sidhe are being hired to do it. Its not as if they just woke up and said, "Hey, let's make a Jackass game"...

I see potential in it as well though. If done correctly, it could become a great party game. The best thing they can do is to make it very party-game based. Filled with fun factor. It would have to be fun first and foremost, otherwise they will never sell, not necessarily a long or deep game, but with great multiplayer, and with graphics decent enough to disgust you. Hell, I'd play that. Swimming round in an oxidation pond.
Also, if they have a substantial ammount of Jackass footage to go with it, it would be alright, and add quite a bit if you get bored. Never been a huge Jackass fan myself, but I respect what they do.... HA!! No, I don't, but it could be a very funny game if they make it right.

I somehow doubt that will be happening anytime soon. sidhe are based soley on rl 2 and that game only.

it doesn't matter that gripshift is one of the best psp titles out there at the moment. people overlook that because of rl 2.

red mile entertainment the guys sidhe are making the game for aren't exactly small fry either. they published heroes of the pacific and signed a publishing agreement with sony online entertainment. I somehow doubt sony would pick some nothing developer for one of their games.

Exactly. Gripshift got decent reviews all round. At last years E3, IGN were very impressed with it and gave it the wildcard in the best of show... Only about 5 or 6 games were mentioned. I haven't played it myself, but it shows that they do have enough talent to make a decent game. I think they'd want to make this game as it would put them even further on the map, and adds something else to their CV... If they make a decent go of it... Meaning they'd get even better and bigger jobs.

Thing you have to remember, it's a business, and potentially, this could be a better move. I think they will still make RL3 though.

We all will go out and try it? Jackass is liked by a lot of people, but a lot of other people think it's average or maybe even had it's day.

As for Sidhe, they are company that promised an awesome game in RL2, and it turned out to be slightly worse than an average game, and it came out three months after they estimated. With Gripshift they made a decent effort for once, but as for Melbourne Cup Challenge, they said they'd release it about 7 months ago. It's still not out!

The people who have complained about Sidhe most on this forum are let-down consumers who've actually bought there games like myself. I paid $99 for a game I only played about 20 times (RL2), 19 of those times I was hoping it'd get better. It didn't. I didn't enjoy sitting through that experience, and I never wanted to hate Sidhe's effort. I just did.

I really hope I've earned or paid for the right to bitch a little about Sidhe.

I hope they redeem themselves as games developers with Jackass, I really do. Of course they'll never redeem themselves with me untill I get a very playable RL3. I've already paid down $99 towards it's development, which may very well go into Jackass.

I personally think that whether they were asked to work on it or not, Mario has made a very fitting choice, if not for his company, then for himself.

yeah fair enough call i guess. lots of people got burnt by rl2 and so therefore any other game by sidhe will be considered more heavily before actually buying it.

as for melbourn cup challenge I really don't know what is happening with that game. the original release estimate was for around the melbourn cup last year then due to licesnes being added it got pushed back another few months. the HES/sidhe relationship in this game seems to have come to the fore again with HES not allowing sidhe to release information about the game. hopefully for sidhe's sake it does turn out to be good.

as for jackass well some people proabbly won't like it as they don't like the show. others may not even look at it due to their experince of rl 2.
this is a big risk for sidhe as it goes against what they have been doing recently and if it goes wrong they may not get another big contract.

I am maintaining pesimistic view

Anything from this Mob, will be late and underwhelming

Dont take the bait they feed ya...........this wise fish been hooked to many times

Besides Jackass the video game?? c'mon man.........seriously they would make a game based on Oprah Winfrey.

Any contract they are offered - they take, regardless if they think they can do the job.........$$ is talking more than anything else.

In fact half the reason they are NOW well known within the industry is becuase they make niche games, and convert them to attract the masses - which in a sense takes away from the niche demographic, that want it as realistic as possible

There are no falls or enquiries on MCC/FDR - Frankly put by the MD himself "Our budget does not cater for falls/enquiries"......well then, the online mode promised to make this game better than the other horse titles - is now full of illegal riding, where any online cheat will block you for a run all the way down the straight.

Bottom line if u are going make an online game - u gotto iron out all the holes to make the online fully embrace its potential.......any cheating is never condoned, and in fact, when it exists and is possible the game is never played online again.

I guess the subject matter isn't really my thing. I must say though, it'd have to come fairly hotly recommended by some very credible sources for me to try it.

If an RL3 comes out, I'll give them another chance, I mean look at the big improvement between Rugby 2004 and Rugby 2005, then the medium sized improvement in '06.

At the end of the day, I'll give them a chance again with the third title, but I kind of resented being told that I was being negative by Mario for just trying lower expectations in the lead up to RL2. There was far too much hype.

I know they never meant to make a poor to average game, but they had reviews out (which look fixed now) saying it was a 9/10 game for goodness sake!

When it comes to Horse Racing an Rugby I buy it anyways

I love the sports so much i can even have a little fun no matter how crap it is

Especially horse racing

However when u have EARugby06 going around u cant help think what RL2 has missed.

Most horse racing games are very good at what they do, and all offer a different aspect of horse racing, so u can buy them all to get what you wantr - most horse racing games are cheap aswell

In Sidhe's case they have aussie tracks - so i am buying no matter what - racing randwick/warwick farm and Moonee Valley is a dream come true for me.

Mooney Valley was in Gallop Racer2, and racing the Cox Plate with the very short straight made for some hair raising moves @ the 800m mark making ur way around the OUTSIDE OF THE PACK, as you round a bend - DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH STAMINA TO DO THIS..........voice always racing thru your head!!! :D

But I will always critisise their PR crap, and timeframes of release - I have no time for people that keep u in the dark, when in the end, ur going to credit them with $$ :rahh:

I must admit at first i thought a game based on jack-ass never going to result in a good game, but after reading the ign.com preview I reckon the blokes at Sidhe have come up with a game design which suits the subject matter, crazy party-style mini games.
I think we have all been burned by RL2, but that is no reason to immediately write off any other games that they announce.

The only annoucement i wan to hear from sidhe is that they are using all their manpower and resources to make RL3 the game that it should be.
