Already a thread about this..........
Existing headgear thread (http://www.therugbyforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1467)
I'd say these two threads are different enough... besides, this section isn't exactly flooded w/ topics... btw, here's the first post of the other topic
"slightly off topic, but i was watching boots n all a while ago (leauge show) and aparrantly once the coach thoght that the team would play better if they all wore head gear! they only did it once thogh. anyone herd any stories like this in union?"

Yes, but if you bother to read the rest of the thread, people go on to discuss who wears head gear and its merits.

i said yes, i dont like getting my ears ripped off
I used to wear a scrum hat, but they don't really protect your head al that much, they just look good, I've had several blows to the head that have hurt just as much with a scrum cap on, than off.

there used mostly for tight fowards who dont want there ears getting mashed in the scrums. f*** knows why backs wear them. THEY OFFER NO PROTECTION AGAINCED HEAD KNOCKS i can remember josh kronfeild getting in shit for going head first into tackles (which was his style, and he wore head gear) and kids copied him becuase they thought it helped them WRONG!
i just hate it when people dont know whats their main porpouse. pet peeve of mine. nothing againced anyone

I'm a back, and I wear one to stop my ear getting ripped off, as it has partially been before. Does that make me in the wrong?
I wear one (prop) ever since I got concussed. It's not a 100% protection, but I'm sure it will help against the occasional glancing blow.
I've seen backs get their ears torn, so I can see why they'd wear one.
scrum caps can also be worn to soften blows to the head- thats what most backs think anyway- David Humphreys and Elton Flatley are prime examples of backs that wear scrum hats

no, but if people rely on them to stop getting knocked out, your wrong. if your going to get hit in the head, its not going to matter weither you are wearing headgear or not.
plus as the old saying goes: once hit twice shy, for you webby.
when i play rugby, i wouldnt go out of my way to smash a back with head gear, but i just get pissed when people think that it will save there lifes.

If I wanna protect my ears I wear tape. It's cheaper than a scrum cap an doesn't make u sweat as much.

I don't wear a scrum cap to cushion the blows, because it doesn't much at all. I wear one to stop cuts, which it does, and damage to ears.

Isn't it funny that the backs that kick the most often wear scrumcaps. Sure, there are exceptions like Sam Tuitupou but Louis Koen, Derick Hougaard, Flatley, Humphries, and a few others are prime examples. When the hell would they need to soften the blow when they never make any contact in the first place?

The people who kick are generally 10s, and as such are hunted by the opposition back-row players. This is, I imagine, why many of them choose to wear added protection.

Saints, perhaps but why does it seem that the ones who kick all the time get them whereas the running flyhalves don't wear them? Spencer takes plenty of knocks and yet doesn't wear a scrum cap. Frankly, they don't really provide much extra protection in a collision and are better for the prevention of ear damage which isn't really a concern for 10's.
remeber O'Gara and Duncan McRae he didn't even wear one after that

i wear a scrum cap for a few reasons.. when i started playing lock regularly, it helped with my ears, then it became a bit of a mental thing that lets me hit people that much harder, and in addition i found it kept my hair out of the way.

where I play scrum caps are not allowed. The Union does not believe any padding should be allowed and they are very traditional.

what about tape, for ear reasons, does that count?

what union do you play for? aren't the irb laws meant to be international standards? and if that is the case, since they allow for protective head gear, how is it not allowed?

Back in the days when I played Union they brought in rules saying that all safety equipment had to carry IRB standards. They didn't make any difference, it was just a gay rule.

Since, we're on the general subject of padding, what are you ppl's views on shoulder pads? I find it's a little gridiron style to wear shoulder pads, but I do know someone who had problems in the shoulders and coudn't play without them.

I wear pads, and still managed to dislocate my shoulder. Probably because they were old and shite. http://www.therugbyforum.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif Hopefully I'll get some new ones before next season, with the padding in small triangles to absorb more of the impact than just a flat piece fo foam.
I think with the game getting ever more physical, pads are still a personal choice, but will prevent serious injuries in the long run.

isnt the main point of them for tight fowards (especially frount rows) to stop there sholders getting f***ed up in the scrums?

They absorb some of the impact in tackles as well.

I wear a scrum cap to stop my ears falling off in the scrum
and I wear pads because the doctors told me that I had to after dislocating my collarbone

I started using a scrum cap after many rides in the ambulance for concusion and i use shoulder pads because i've broken both my colar bones. And they both make the game better because you can play a more physical game
Canadian_Rugby_Guy

Yeah but the more physical game is what can lead to more injuries.
harrison2468

I'd rather play a more physical game and get injured than pussy out and not get injured.
I used to wear one but it impaired my vision and hearing, just didn't like it how it squashed my face down and made it hard to see.
I think Michael Jones would cut a section of the front out but me, I just stopped wearing them.
