I think I'm in every other Making Of video so you'll be sick of me by the end.

"we've had to deal with guys from Russia, Georgia, Fiji"
more international licenses?
Not necessarily. It would be best to wait until we announce more licences without drawing conclusions like that. We recorded a range of names from rugby-playing territories.

He's starting to get better as a commentator. Watching the Highlanders game right now and he's improving, but after all he's only been in this sort of thing for a little while now. :)

I think the game will be pretty poor to be honest especially if teams are not licenced nothing worse than playing a game full of incorrectly spelt players and the sidhe league games were so mediocre.

Cool story bro.
But no one knows what is licenced, and HB may have less licences... so yeah nice input...
Do you wanna die tonight?
I'm far to scared right now to answer. Oh wait, no I'm not you're making a fantastic impression on the forums, your such an internet tough guy you make me feel intimidated by your big internet muscles comprised of 0's and 1's.
Correct me if I'm wrong but from playing the HB rugby series the commentators still said the name properly but it just wasn't spelt correctly. So any teams in the game without licencing may still have the correct verbalisation of the names, the spelling will just need to be tweaked?

We've put up a new making of video, this time looking at stadium creation:
http://rugbychallengegame.com/2011/05/stadium-creation/
Enjoy :)
I'm liking these weekly vids.
By the sounds of that their gong to have the NZ RWC stadia plus a few extras, the aus S15 stadia plus one more, the SA S15 stadia and the 6N stadia. If the gameplay is half as good as the preparation this will be a cracking game.

What do you mean ouch HB? just because Sidhe have realeased a screenshot doesn't mean they're attacking and trying to force HB into doing something. From w.hat I've read from Milla and Mario's posts they want HB to almost be as successful as them

Well, it is a direct screen capture from the game on console, so technically it is a screenshot.

Heh, of course both teams want their respective games to be "the best", but there is no reason why both games can't be successful. A market hungry for more rugby games is good for both of us.

You shouldn't have any problems getting hold of it :)
HB and Sidhe are competitors, but we're not enemies. Mario corresponds with his counterpart HB Studios, and there's certainly no antagonism between our teams. I am really looking forward to seeing their game!

Absolutely impressive! In my opinion these shots hint at possibly the best sports game presentation to date in either of the four most talked about game types on TRF (Rugby, League, Cricket and Soccer). Honestly, all the team of artists and programmers at Sidhe deserve a big pat on the back if this is a sign of the overall achievement of Rugby Challenge.
Now that presentation, franchise mode and customisation is seemingly checked off, great gameplay and AI will seal the deal. :D

What jerseys will the Highlanders have?
Lbidude7
02-06-11, 10:01 PM
Hey I heard there's supposed to be 32 Northern Hemisphere teams:
If my math is correct
Magner's: 12 teams
Top 14: 14
Aviva: 12
Total 38
any comment? or more to be release closer to release date?
Those figures did not come from us. We have said that there will be more Northern Hemisphere licences than Southern Hemisphere licences. Someone has added up how many teams they think we will have for the Southern Hemisphere and then added one for the north.
oooo ^^^^ thats a new piece of info :P Must have missed that over on your forums :P Keep up the good work :D

More details on what the game will be called in respective countries will be released closer to the release. Probably will be called Wallabies rugby challenge in Australia. Maybe they could do use a top line player as a cover man? Call it "David Pocock's Rugby Challenge". There are few better ambassadors for the game here in Aus (Gituea comes across as a real douche IMO)... maybe Will Genia, but no-one else really.

Although Irish, I follow Super 15 closely and with licensing for SUper 15 and European teams I am nearly certain I would have gotton Rugby CHallenge if the graphics and gameplay were good. After seeing both screenshots Rugby CHallenge looks alot smoother, developed anfd more involved (community wise). I do not understand how RWC could release screens like that! Even if it looks 10x better now releasing a half hearted attempt just made me think just how involved will HB be :/ If there was an online glitch they would take a long time to fix it while Sidhe respond to questions everyday and are releasing info slowly.

How can you say that RWC 2011 is lacking in Marketing the campaign's are only just beginning, yes SIDHE have been more visible, but HB have done Q&A's and have involved the fans in the development stage of the game. I think the whole contest is still up for grabs, its very early days...

I wouldn't say RWC has lost graphics yet they're getting knocked around the ring though, up against the ropes but one good punch back could get 'em back in the game.

I don't know if the campaigns are "just beginning"... there're only a few months left until release now and I think it's fair to say that Sidhe has enacted a superior marketing campaign since both titles were announced last year. If this were a rugby match, Sidhe would have dominated field position and possession and put on a couple very flashy tries at this point over the HB side who have more or less just kicked away what ball they had and refused to come out of their shell. I'd say we're in the last 20 of the match at this point. Not too late for a come back, but they'll wanna have a few fancy set moves they can unleash if they're to be a chance ;) .

Mario...game looks, and sounds unreal! Good job!
When will the release date be revealed?
Some sort of a clue............please!
In time for the Rugby World Cup.
Mario I don't know if this has been covered ..
But do you have set plays in the game? And will we be able to edit already created players like Sony Bill Williams for example?
Cheers from South Africa
Quick question and quite far fetched I must warn you. Do you have a few specific individual actions or commentary remarks? For example, will Chris Ashtons 'splash' be in the game. Can you answer that? :)
Licenced likenesses of individual players won't be editable.

Sorry Milla if it's already been asked or if your tied with licensing at the moment but do you have Northern Hemisphere clubs in the game?
We have Northern Hemisphere licences. More soon :)
We have Northern Hemisphere licences. More soon
Very nice Milla. I understand this probably falls into the 'more soon' category, but by northern hemisphere are you also refferring to International? Thanks.
I understand this probably falls into the 'more soon' category...
You're correct.
Screenshots look great, and that article sounds really promising! I just have a few questions, sorry if it has been asked before BUT:
Will the game support modding?
If you say you have licenses for the Super 15, does that include South African teams? I also heard someone mention the tri-nations, does that include SA?
I know you support online play, but will you support LAN as well?
Thanks in advance! Looks amazing, can't wait.
As always
Whoareyou, whoareyou, whoareyooooouu?
Runaway, runaway, rrrrrunawaaayyyy!!
Thanks for the feedback Milla.
But what I actually wanted to know was , can you for instance change Sony Bill Williams speed? .... You guys done a pretty good job making the players look incredible life like ....

That's a shame. It would've been cool to edit players hair or facial hair such as Andy Ellis mustache.
Will there be a "Movember" mode where in November certain players suddenly spout terrible top lip warmers?

It almost seems that Rugby Challenge is going to take the upper hand on this. Just look at the screenshots. And Detail
Last week NZGamer.com popped down to Sidhe Interactive to check out All Blacks Rugby Challenge. It's obviously an appropriate title for New Zealand sport this year, but it’s also an attempt to make an engaging Rugby title — something that's proved problematic for developers over the years. Thankfully, as with the game’s namesakes, things are looking positive heading into final prep.
After a couple of impressive stills of ITM Cup stadiums for Canterbury and Taranaki (photographers were sent round all the grounds, and unfinished stadiums — such as Eden Park — were completed off their plans) we got our first look at the menu.
The intro sequence features Mils Muliaina, Dan Carter and Ritchie McCaw in the heat of action setting up a try. However, this sequence can change as the game will detect which country you're based in and select your national team by default. This is similar to the EA Sports Favourite team option that featured in FIFA, NBA and Madden, but the presentation is far better than we've seen in any sports game from Sidhe.
The developers have really aimed for a more emotional and engaging experience; there are lens flares, slow mo captures and snap zooms galore. If you've seen the night-time Piri Weepu haka shot, you'll see what I'm talking about. The camera angles are more dramatic.
Sidhe has also managed to break new ground by individuating crowd members. The change from a classic "cardboard" crowd has made big waves in the international digital world. There are even security guards, journalists, teammates and other sideline essentials. It's a wonderful small touch that looks very impressive.
http://nzgamer.com/data/Gallery/2399/3948816278.jpg
Apart from one and two-player options, you'll also be able to play a single season and attempt a legacy in Franchise Mode. The ITM, Qantas and Super 15 franchises will be available, and there is also word of multiple European teams being involved. For those curious, the squads are current as of two weeks ago. As you’d expect, a big focus has been placed on online play to ensure any lag is minimised, so here’s hoping you and three mates can go compete without any jitters.
A handy tutorial helps get you up to scratch and, with an eye to the RWC bringing in new fans, a lot of work has been put into making this both easy and accessible. Various skills, such as running between cones, practicing kicks, and many other NZ primary school classics will have you doing behind-the-back passes and side-stepping opponents in no time.
All Blacks Rugby Challenge also features Rugby Money, a rewards system most gamers will be familiar with (think GT or Burnout). These rewards come from completing various activities, whether running through the tutorials or playing online, and can be spent in the Rugby Store. This is not an online function, but rather an in-game unlockable system similar to Sidhe's Rugby League games.
http://nzgamer.com/data/Gallery/2399/5552774691.jpg
After being walked through a game featuring the All Blacks (game rating 95, the highest in-game) vs. the Wallabies (game rating 91, deal with it), we got our own chance for glory.
The pre-game Load Screen allow players to practice their passing skills in both one and two-player modes in a generic New York-esque background, although apparently it was originally Wellington's Newtown Park.
Of course, the All Blacks do the Haka. Only Ka Mate will feature, and in this case is led by Hosea Gear. Apparently the game will always pick the most relevant player to lead the Haka. Opposition teams respectfully stand and take it, which sadly means no Manu Samoa or other countries’ traditional challenges.
http://nzgamer.com/data/Gallery/2399/2961193536.jpg
Controls are simple and should be familiar to most sports game fans. An interesting thing to note is that bound characters in a ruck cannot be unbound, to allow for a faster game. When kicking, the wind is shown dimensionally on the field using VVVV symbols rather than a HUD system. Side-stepping and fending require the use of the right analog stick, and passing after a tackle will result in an offload, depending on your stats.
When a player starts to pulse, they gain momentum and will have heightened attributes (break tackles etc). Those attributes include Mental Agility, which affects both a player’s awareness (especially with offloads) and also relates to their Discipline stat. Incidentally, Ma'a Nonu gets 58 MA. If you have a problem with that, there's an incredibly detailed player editor and character creation menu, which will allow for all those personalised rugby memories you've been craving.
Commentary comes from Grant Nisbett and Justin Marshall, with Nisbett doing the heavy lifting and Marshall firing in asides. Fans of Jonah Lomu Rugby will be glad to hear Sidhe are fans of the game, so you may hear a couple of classics ("Dig's like a demented mole!") popping up. And that's not the only involvement the big man has lent to the game.
http://nzgamer.com/data/Gallery/2399/7424343622.jpg
Sidhe Interactive has been liaising with the NZRFU for their Weta Digital motion capture with Jonah Lomu and various All Blacks, although we haven’t yet been told which ones.
All in all, this is an impressive display, and something rugby fans should be excited about. Can it finally give us a rugby game to be proud of? We’ll find out in the coming months.
All Blacks Rugby Challenge will be released on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and PS Vita.
We've posted some more screen-shots this morning:

There is another Wallabies player at the back of the ruck, lower down that is mostly hidden. You can just make out his leg behind the leg of number 11.
The only problem I have with the graphics so far is players appear to float above the ground? i.e. their studs don't actually go into the ground they just float above it.
Has a proper instant replay function been confirmed for this game yet?

It's a visual anomaly created by the way depth buffers and draw ordering works, combined with the camera angles. Not really noticable when it is all moving.

I thought as much, it's just something that looks funny, has no real affect on gameplay or enjoyablity overall.
Has a proper instant replay function been confirmed for this game yet?
I guess the answer to this question is no.
I really shouldnt have to even ask it. I should be able to assume that it will have an instant replay and not
even worry about it. Having a sports game without a replay system just does not make any sense. The
whole purpose of sports video games is to re-create the excitement and unpredictable moments
we see in sports. When you cant playback these moments then thats a big let down.
So while RC has the best graphics I have ever seen in a rugby title, Id happily take them back for an
instant replay. And, lets face it, other than cut scenes the only time we would actually be able to
see shots like the screens released so far are via instant replay.

Seems like an unneccesary rant at this stage..
Well, nice of you to join in with an unneccesary post. ;)
If we don't answer a question it isn't an indication of what the answer may be. Some information hasn't been cleared for release.
My question was 'has it been confirmed yet?' and when I said the answer was 'no' I meant as in 'no it hasnt been confirmed.' I wasnt jumping to conclusions based on the lack of response, but more the lack of a manual replay system in Sidhes previous league titles.
Thanks for the response, I managed to find a post from Mario over on the official forum indicating that it is or atleast was being worked on. Hopefully the news on that front is good this time around.
Id hate to go off on another uneccessary rant, especially at this stage.
My apologies. I missed the precise wording.

nice screenshots again. Know its only a screenshot so you cant really tell much, but in the 1st one there seems very little movement from other players except the one with the ball and tackler. Just a slight concern but is probably nothing as a screenshot doesnt really tell you anything. Also when we getting a shot from a standard game playing view? guess your holding onto that little gem. Perfect is a matter of opinion. The style that one developer may favour could be considered perfect to some and horrendous to others. When you have variety and competition you're much more likely to increase the overall quality of both products and cater to different gameplay preferences. One game can't be perfect.

Obviously this is dissapointing for rugby fans. I think we are all used to EA Rugby games thats why we expect all major teams and comps to be licenced. Tough luck I say!!
A question to the modders/Mario, I don't have a console yet, however I will get one so I can play both rugby games. I really appreciate the work that the modders do for the Rugby 08 to keep the game alive for 4 years. However I bought the game for PC and the mods are for PC (I think). So when people release mods for the Rugby Challenge (I hope), will I be able to apply them for console version of the game?

Not really.
no. console games are deliberately closed off to prevent large scale modding. all you will be able to do is whatever the in-game editor allows and any future dlc/patches that might come out. my advice would be to get 2 versions of the game pc for mods that will come out and console for online play.

Gutted to hear about the lack of official licence, but at the end of the day there will still be representation so thats fine. Been playing PES all week, so i been used to playing against MAN Blue, and Mersyside red :P The players still looked the same (but obviously that will depend on the "licence restrictions" with other companies). its sad for the SA gamers because they wont have a "complete" representation in the game (which is totally out of SIDHE's hands). I presume that greed over money was the problem. Every union is the same :( :( keep up the good work guys, cant wait to see what you have in store for us :D

Yes, I imagine it must be a little like talking to Dr Evil.
Sidhe: We have a proposition for you. We'd like to have access to all official team licenses and player likeness for use in a video game and will be willing to pay you a reasonable price. Please bear in mind that this will be a mutually beneficial agreement in which your brands will receive exposure that they otherwise wouldn't - therefore carrying the potential to increase your existing fan base. What price would you consider fair for such a relationship?

Pretty mean. Like the players mo-cap at the end. Nice video footage too. 1st rugby game this year to do so so far ;)
Whilst it is dissapointing not to have licenced South African, English teams (possibly more), I hope it does not have too much of a negative impact to the sales of the game. Lets be honest, England and South Africa are much bigger markets compared to Australia and NZ. Licencing helps sales. The Joe public will buy the game based on marketing, front and back cover of the game.
Aviva competition will help compensate the lack of unlicenced English team, but I think master stroke could be getting Jonah involved and using his name, e.g. Jonah Lomu Rugby Challange - in countries where there is not much licensing. Because Jonah is a worldwide figure, his name has been used before in a successful rugby game.
Also releasing the game on more platforms will benefit Rugby Challenge sales.
All this licensing makes me wonder how all the deals get made, is it based on first come first in basis? Money? Supporting local developers/distributors? Or abit of everything?
...wow.

It's good that the editor is so complexed as I remember from Rugby 08 what little the on-screen characters resembled of the players they were meant to be.
Yes true, all Saffa are difficult lol. Just think of this song next time you have to deal with those horrible Saffa in-laws. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v439zTOJVho
That video is hilarious! I think I'll save it :)
