Read somewhere that you can change the team that pops up behind the menu screen and in the free play mode (so Lomu All Stars re default for this version)? Wanna change it to either Cardiff or Wales but haven't figured out how yet?

started playing this on pro, man its frustrating, if you have a 2nd tier team its almost guaranteed you'll lose the ball in at least the second phase, and the offloads the opposition can do on pro is ridiculous. maybe i need more practice at pro but shit this is fustratingIt aint you bro, it takes a while to get use to the gameplay especially if you're a Ea Sports Rugby Franchise player. I usually play on normal but when I feel like a challenge I only go on hard and that's frustrating enough lol Keep at it I'm sure you'll find it to be alot more enjoyable being challenged rather than whooping the cpu 50+

Yeah pro is ridiculous. What's worse is the goal kicking etc becomes stupidly difficult. There've been a couple times where I could've won with a penalty but you can't take that option because the kicking is way to fast and pin point accuracy is needed.
Bit silly how the AI's offloading ability improves crazily as well. Need to play around with the sliders more I think.

I love the game, I mainly did editing last night (Ireland, England and Argentina, I'm going to do Wales and S.A and probably leave it, I like how they put in the custom jerseys that look way better than the default international jerseys) and a four nations with my friends. The game sold out really fast in Dublin I got it around 4 after school my friend came in 90 minutes later and it was sold out.

I made it to the semi final with Fiji against Australia on Pro level, when playing Australia I had to keep restarting the match lol it was so damn hard, I couldn't win the game against Aus without cheating, I cheated once when aus went to score a try I just changed teams and made them butcher the try lol, the offloads are just so frustrating i had to, but I ended up beating aussie comfortably with Fiji in the end, but it took a few lucky tries. But even when I played as NZ it was hard to beat Aus on Pro, the conversions are very hard, I've never kicked it by getting it on the yellow point, I'm usually lucky if I can just get the conversion on the blue part and thats when I'm in front of the posts. To stop myself from getting frustrated I just laugh at how ridiculous the offloads are including my own offloads.

I can win games pretty easily on hard mode though

Just noticed something, anyone see that injuries dont carry between competitions on franchise mode? Xavier Rush got injuried in my 2nd European Cup pool match, was fine for the next match in the Pro 12 then was injured again in the next Euro match.

Been having some epic games on their too. One of my favourite games was one where I was awful for 65 mins vs Glasgow and was 15 - 0 down, finally got a converted try in the corner with Halfpenny, then blitzed them with a length of the field brace from Warburton and in the dying seconds scored an epic solo try with Halfpenny to secure the win and the bonus point :D
Have a habit of going just too far behind to win matches though, lost 21 - 20, 15 - 14 and 19 - 17 in my first 3 Euro matches with me scored a try in the dying seconds of each to get at least the bonus.

Also, Uruguay were a damn hard nut to crack in the World Cup! Thought 'Ah I'll win this no problem', they led for most of the match and I only beat them 14 - 12 with a Gethin Jenkins try in overtime. Had a look at Uruguays other results too - lost 29 - 28 to Ireland and 23 - 19 to England which made me feel better :p they did get trashed 71 - 8 by the All Blacks though...

Got to say I'm really enjoying the game so far. Still finding my feet in it though.Gameplay seems to have good depth. The learning curve is much steeper than RWC and it takes a bit of getting used to, having been so used to HB's games.
I like the rucking in that adding too many players creates gaps and the balance and strategy involved in it. Defending is more difficult than RWC I find- no superman tackles! The defensive line seems that bit slower to set than RWC, making it a bit more realistic there too. Love the inside passes in this game :D

Kicking is good and slick. Being able to drop into the pocket would be nice, as would set plays.
Like the 'hit' aspect of scrummaging and the timing, though the movement of the scrum back and forth is a bit too extreme.
Also like the lineouts. RWC's are too simple IMO. Needs a mauling option though. Like the spontaneous mauling though. Lovely addition.

Fly half can end up in funny places though. The game needs a bit more forward play too. RWC has done quite well here, even if the superman tackles make forward play largely redundant. The fend and side steps are nice, though I'm undecided about the dummies.

Kind of annoying that we can't move the players from provinces to Irish team, but the player models look remarkably similar to the ones in the provinces, but with different names. Only thing I noticed though, when I change the player names, the commentary names aren't read out, just the generic "number 12" etc. Not sure of the reason for this. Gets a bit irritating.

The commentary isn't actually that bad when you're playing the game. Thought I'd have to turn it off but I can live with it. RWC's is probably better though, if more limited. Customisation is fantastic if you have the patience for it. Can't comment on the career really as I haven't played enough of it. I think the graphics are pretty special for what is probably a relatively low budget game. Game looks wonderful.

For some reason there doesn't seem to be a button to perform a defensive touch down? Would be nice to be able to launch the number eight of a scrum too.
That's all I can think of at the moment. There are good and bad points to both games, but based on my limited playing time, RC seems to be the better package, though time will tell as the novelty will wear off to an extent I'm sure.

All in all I really hope that Sidhe and Tru Blu will build on what seems a pretty impressive foundation for future games in a series. I just really hope that I won't be waiting four more years for the next fix. :D

Yupp, done the starting XV the replacements and a few of the other squad members. Replaced one of the players I didn't recognise with Gavin Henson too, and edited who I thought was Gavin Thomas into Toby Faletau. Gonna see if I can work out the other squad members too, if not will just change them into what I think are realistic fringe players. Gonna see if I can chuck the edited Welsh internationals into their respective Top14 teams too.
Will attempt the other unlicenced teams at some point or other...

Just as a front note I am still enjoying this game, Some good things, I like the line outs (Would have been better to be able to create mauls), Like the scrums ( Agree with the comments about the pushing being too extreme), Forward play is pretty redundant as well as set peices. Offloads are way too Often and unrealistic! some of the passing mechanics are strange and un natural. Not been able to take my created team online (Not sure if this is possible or if there is a work around)

Just On licences, RWC has the licence to England, Liknesses, Kit and emblem For the world cup, Out of the world cup they dont have the kit or emblem! so that says to me that that licence is just out there with no one laying claim!

I cant help but think if HB and Sidhe had joined forces, we would have had a complete and unbelivably great Rugby experience!

Still playing and Enjoying both, before anyone jumps on me for being negative!

I agree with most of what OnTheBall said.

What is confusing, is some of the contradictions in gameplay. Lineouts are very sim, but scrums are pure arcade. You can't hang around at a breakdown, but you get an age to aim your kicks.

RWC knows what it is, and is structured and tight. RC is a bag of ideas, but a bit loose. It is good that they are different, and both have areas where they can improve. HB need to expand on what they have, whereas Sidhe need to decide which direction to take.

Here are my thoughts on RC:

It's fun, but some things are really frustrating:

- Fly-half is never in the pocket, he is buggering around on the wing.

- Why are my forwards in my backline or trying to be backline players? I'm not playing with South Africa circa 2008

- I can't pick up at the base of the scrum with my no.8? Why?

- Can't maul from line-out

- Passing is wack, there is almost never a plain old simple pass. always these extravagant long passes or fancy bullshit.

- Quick grubber without going into slow mo is about useful as a tonsil

The good:

- Graphics is amazing

- It's fun, most of the time.

- Chip kicks

- It's not easy

- Customization is awesome

So much potential, but those little things is a bit disappointing because how did you guys miss seeing these problems when testing it? Or am I just doing something wrong that I'm getting weird passes and a screwed up backline?

Thoughts guys?

The patch is out. The default offload settings have not changed, but there are both global sliders as well as team tactics sliders that you can alter to both reduce the number of offloads and the chance of their success if you wish.

agree on everything, the game is fun and looks amazing, just a few little strange things like the team isn't structured, the forwards loiter in the back line and run like wingers and my flyhalf is missing when I want him to recieve the ball to take a dropgoal etc. (cue quade cooper jokes). does anyone else feel that the game has more of a rugby league feel to it?

also, how are people's online experience. I need to sort out my video card but i have noticed with my online opponent as well as myself you can never throw a straight linout or kick a conversion unless you get lucky and it lands on the mark.

I love this game, I'm doing a career with Ireland and Scarlets. I would have done Leinster but I edited them way to good so it's too easy, they now win all their matches by about 50 points.

I'm second in the pro12 after Leinster, losing to Leinster and Glasgow. Top of my Heineken cup group on 19 points beating Perpingan 7-3, Leiceter 26-17 and Treviso 40-10 twice. I went out of the World Cup after a great start in the All Blacks match I lost with three tries in 10 minutes, 19-14... And then I lost to none other than Wales 21-14.

I'm having passing issues with certain teams. I won a game with Quins 26-0 then played a game with Toulouse playing the same team, and (i am not joking) they could not string two passes together. Finally played the game.

My system - PS3 Slim. Software versions 3.66.
RC - No patch.

Only froze ONCE.. And that was during the loading screen where you run around on screen. Thats it. Other wise its gone off without hitch.

Comments/Suggestion
- WOuld be nice if you had a name indicator for who was at the back of the ruck. Playing as Samoa, many times i thought i saw a gap next to the ruck.. and picking it up with the scrumhalf expecting it to be Kahn to ghost thru the gap.. ONLY for it to be a Prop standing at scrumhalf?

- Also... How about the option to pass it to forwards or backs? Sometimes i just wanna smash it up front with a forward.. But it ends up being a backs player. Also, that miss out pass seems to be the only advanced passing technique there is.

- A really wish there were set moves for attack AND defense. I know it would be like EA.. But the directional buttons would have been perfect to set up defensive tactics and attacking tactics on the fly.

- The lineout looks weird when they jump up... and slowly go down.. However.. My gripe seems to be that the first reciever from the lineout is always the Winger?

- Also the L1-R1 pass to playmaker... Only a 50% success ratio.. It seems to go to the Fullback or 2nd five alot of times.

- Scrums... are on Roller Skates... A bit too unrealistic.. But ok for now i guess.

- Passing.. It was a gripe at first how the passes went to ground.. But i learned not to spam the passes.. Just like in Real life.. However when playing as the Reds.. Its funny how simmons has a hard time passing the ball to his nearest man.. with the ball going to ground... But yet can throw a huge behind the back offload with pinpoint accuracy at a distance of 30 meters.. Lol

ANYWAYS. A great first up title by sidhe. Just a few things lacking.. But 7/10 seems right. Hopefully they incorporate some of these suggestions in regards to set plays on attack and defense, lineouts and scrums.. as well as player indicators at the back of the ruck. AND of course options to pass to forwards or backs.

Meh.. I guess i have too much of the EA habits still in me.

on pc, when I hold the pass button. one of the players has a W on his head (I am using keyboard), i'm not sure if any other player has a letter on their head, but I presume this allows me to pick who i'm going to pass to?

also a lack of radar at the bottom makes it difficult to see where my players are

cimbomjubi82
19-10-11, 05:44 PM
To me the game needs to improve/include the following areas:

1. Career Mode that has some depth and variation including realistic season simulation. Current mode is very poor.
2. Dropgoals. The kicking animation is just so unrealistic, but elsewhere in game they have a proper drop-goal animation. This may be moddable on PC.
3. Sliders for AI, not just for user settings. That would help immensely. I don't get any offloads against me.. well under 5-8 a game which is much better.
4. Penalties and infringements. There aren't any coded in, so no hands in ruck, not releasing, not rolling away, collapsing maul/scrum, poor scrummaging/lineout etc. This is vital, because without it it's just a game of seeing who scores the most tries.
5. A couple more techniques, such as a goose step, 'take into contact' options, so you can actively recycle the ball.
6. Some basic set moves off of the set-pieces and in open play.

But other than that, the game is just amazing.

That game was very very similar apart from the fact that it had the same name(!), same league licenses, an odd passing system (banana passes), no setplays, no penalties, and it played a bit like rugby league. Did Sidhe buy Swordfish or something?

this game is far from perfect, but it is really growing on me. What is unfortunate is that I'm having to spend a lot of time editing the rosters because they're all up to date for last season, and as mentioned by many the European ratings are woeful.

On the subject of this - how do I add a player to a roster without replacing anyone? There doesn't seem to be an option for this.

so I've finally decided to clear the dust off of my PS3 and buy a rugby game...(WC is about to end and I'm going to be sad without rugby) so which one should I buy ? I think Georgia is licensed in RC.

Also.. Played a game against my brother yesterday.. Lol.. Some funny glitches happened. He was NZ, i was AUS.

One particular one for me was hilarious.

He was hot in attack in my 22.. But i turned the ball over at ruck time... I decided to run with my SH and threw a offload to my wing... But the ball went to no one and went to ground.. My bro then got Izzy dagg to pick up the loose ball... But Ioane and O conner Snuffed him into the Dead ball line,.. Lol.. It was going to be a try.. But those animations of breaking tackles prevented him from planting the ball.

Anyways.. It was my ball.. It gave me a choice of either Kick out of my 22 or Kick to touch..... I selected 'kick to touch'... To our surprise.. The next scene we somehow arrived at HIS 22!!!?? And i was kicking to touch right on HIS 22.. Lol.. EASY METERS..

Anyone else get this error?

yeah i found a slight glitch which i'm not too concerned about, similar to yours kavana. something happened at the other end of the field, nek minnit i was taking a penalty shot at goal and nailed it hahahaha

I just picked up a new video card and I can play the game in the highest res with all settings maxed. however the second and subsequent games I play these is a slight jerkiness or delay. I have tried going back the lowest settings and still seem to get the same thing on second and subsequent games. the hard disk light isn't reading at the time either. online play also becomes slightly jerky now and again and there's a split second delay between pressing a button and the action occuring but i presume that has to do with the internet connection at both ends.

anyone else experience this on pc? i will try and clean up and reinstall my video drivers soon and see if that makes a difference. my pc is also well above the recommended specs.

you know how in that other rugby game, how when you play someone in a different position they play like crap, is it the same on here? like if you were to put a first five at halfback will it make him play like crap or have no affect?

can anybody tell me how to make it so the ai doesnt offload so much? apart from that i'm really enjoying it. (I'm assuming its the sliders but i cant work out which way they are meant to go. does towards "take contact" make them more likely to take the contact or more likely to offload?)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

so I've finally decided to clear the dust off of my PS3 and buy a rugby game...(WC is about to end and I'm going to be sad without rugby) so which one should I buy ? I mostly care about two things.. 1)which of the two available games has Georgia licensed and 2)which game has better gameplay ..... sorry I was going to look myself but then I noticed this thread is 157 pages long..
1)rugby challenge

I can't wait to start playing it! I've been getting sick of playing RWC 2011 & Rugby 06' (those are the only 2 other Rugby games I have that I can play on my 360).

I'm not sure how the rugby dollars system works. You seem to get $500 a game, whether it's a win/loss on any difficulty.

I like the game. Online it's a bit annoying, though it doesn't seem to play any differently (like fifa plays different online) as it seems to be set on hard mode, so conversions, scrums, lineouts and rucking all seem like they are too hard to contest at times. Also, i'm not sure why but you can't select the kit for your team, and twice i had the opponent have the same colour kit as me.. its almost like it picks the nearest team colours, as well as selecting a ref in that colour too.

I do love the glory cam, that's great, the lineouts are not repetitive, scrums are good (but seem to be on roller skates, can that be adjusted by stats?) and the mechanics of the game are good. It's just there is no tactical element, so you can't force a penalty at the scrum, or get an edge at the breakdown etc, by fetching the ball, for example. Dropgoals are horrible though.

I'm impressed by the free flowing nature of the game, and the editability of the game too. There's just a couple of pieces missing, and it'd be a truly great game if they were in place.

I'm not sure if these things can be modded on PC, but i assume there is some way to alter parameters etc.

You may not be able to edit the parameters of the game but you can edit the players statistics as a whole to get the gameplay more to your liking. I haven't looked in depth through the game but I'm pretty sure there are no sliders.

After having a few issues with the poor distribution in the UK (N. Ireland to be precise) I got hold of my copy last Wednesday from Gamestop and can happily say that the game is definately a grower and between it and RWC2011, is currently my preferred rugby game.

Spent a good 5-6 hrs solid at the game on my first night and I do admit to coming away feeling totally underwhelmed with it, to the point of considering returning it the next day. Was this really what all the hype was about? Really? It felt more like a Rugby League imitation of Union.
I persevered and focused on a couple of things that have improved my perception & enjoyment of the game so much:

1. RC needs to be played without a controls or game-flow hangover from RWC2011. The 2 games play very differently in terms of control layout and gameplay style or flow.
2. Use the "find playmaker/FH/FB" (or whatever its called) pass option regularly to control the game. The first pass off a ruck is generally not going to your main man as in RWC, so once this is understood, you can't complain when a lock is the first receiver when the option (albeit less known for a beginner used to playing EA titles or RWC2011) is there to bypass that incorrectly postitioned player regularly.
3. Strongly consider who you bring in to contact and where... running your scrumhalf off a ruck, away from support and into a clutch of forwards will rightly lose you the ball, whatever ruck bind options you then use.

I was very sceptical about the game and the first few hours, despite loving the high quality presentation and graphics, left me really wondering how I just couldn't connect with this game.
After a further 2 nights of extended gameplay (5-6 hrs each again as well as playing with customisation - Currie Cup, yay!) I can say my opinion has severly shifted. It needs to be given a chance, preferrably on the easier modes to learn the controls and gameplay style, before moving up to hard and expecting to still enjoy it.

I enjoy the forward play and structured/tactical gameplay in real rugby, so loved these options and the ability to execute them in RWC2011 and as such my time with that game overshadowed how I was playing RC. The fact that the ability to easily execute the set-play and forward based game was missing really grated with me initially.

But giving the game another chance and playing it to it's strengths has really started to make it shine. Loose play, running lines, tackle momentum (and the superb animations), general AI attacking play and lineout gameplay are all far superior to RWC2011.
These are in addition to the presentation values, general animations, tournament/team options, and the multitude of customization options that are also much, much better then those offered by RWC2011.
The final overriding plus point for this game are the excellent camera options/angles that offer just so much more ability to see the game and the options open to you across the pitch whilst also keeping the quality presentation and graphics visible & enjoyable.

There are numerous areas where I'm less then happy, but the positives are good enough to make these inconveniences as opposed to game breakers.

Problems/Improvements
1. Lack of structured, planable forward play - let us pass to forwards from a ruck, pick and go from a ruck with a forward, N8 pick up from a scrum, maul from a lineout
2. No setplays - whilst the free form, running rugby in the game is good, providing set plays would allow a planned attack to begin that can later develop into the open, off-the-cuff running rugby that the game is so good at. Making it up as you go along all the time is not always desirable.
3. No quick lineouts - too often has a great defensive clearing kick been made but with no pressure following up on it, and still I still have to wait and reset for the full lineout.
4. Lack of breakdown tactics (cannot infringe, steal/kill the ball). Leads to less kickable points options.
5. Passes that can cover half the pitch and more - very unrealistic... should the ball be given defined distance value that it can't exceed?
6. Limited place-kick gameplay - allow us to adjust the trajectory and power applied to a kick, have the kicking meter always on display as opposed to hidden by the "press A to start kick" prompt which disappears to show the kicking meter already on the move. We should be able to see when it starts as opposed to playing catch-up with the already moving meter! The wind direction/speed display is great and makes you have to judge it yourself (as opposed to a generic 12kph wind speed value) but otherwise RWC2011 kicking meter options win out when compared.
7. Allow varied trajectory on chip kicks - again I see RWC2011 being the better option here.
8. Quick grubber kicks are nearly useless - to use them properly they almost always have to be held down to bring in the slow-mo mode, increase their default speed/distance to make the quick tap grubber a viable option.
9. Scrums move far too much and the ball doesn't move at all. - been said alot already, but they do go all over the place yet the ball seems to sit static until your N8 walks over it (other then that the mechanic in place is very good)
10. Custom logo options - a very poor selection. With the editing options being so good, it's a shame more generic options couldn't have been added.
11. Custom team names - again could be improved upon with more generic names/places used that would not infringe on unobtained licenses.
12. Limited custom kits - whilst the selection is decent, it is limited enough to make you realise what this could have been. Provide a greater selection of varied kits or alternatively allow us to change the colours used on those kit designs provided (2-3 changeable colours on jersey, change shorts & socks colours independant of the jersey selected)
13. No cup mode available in "Create a Competition" - why are we unable to create a straight knockout tournament (no groups involved)?

Much of the above has been said before by others, so I'm just adding my weight to the already established wants (for a further patch or probable sequel) and there are some things I've not mentioned that are probably a given to be improved upon, such as decreasing offloads and the need to remove player movement restrictions between leagues, but they have been covered better elsewhere and the game does provide some means to get around those 2 problems.

I honestly didn't think I'd enjoy the game having watched the videos and learned the reputation of the previous Sidhe League games. I did (still do I think?) enjoy the limited RWC2011 game for what it did well, but it's RC that I think about when not playing and which I come away from with a sense of fun & enjoyment (RWC2011 tends to be a tenser affair, online and offline).

The game does deserve a chance and should be played without control pre-conceptions from other games. It takes time to learn and become competent at, longer again to master it I suspect.

Well done Sidhe!

(but boo to the crappy UK distribution & release policy... surely it won't be repeated should a sequel be commissioned!)

Is the Glory cam just that it zooms in on your player when he is running? Because it seems that's what it is, a zoom. I don't like it and had to turn it off because I can't see my teammates trailing me. I also find it frustrating hitting X to break a tackle and then proceed to kick the ball once the tackle is broken! Grrrrrrr.

guys i was hoping you could help me out here. i've got the game on ps3 and i'm loving it but the kit situation and not being able to edit them annoys me. I look at the beautiful creations for the pc being made over on the sidhe forums and i wonder why it cannot be done for the ps3 or xbox. i was looking at one of my old PES games which i still have on my ps3 and i see that i have 100s of 'licensed' kits which i managed to download form a modding site. They each have their own playstation folder which corresponds to the game code and in each folder are the necessary files. Looking at how this has been done and knowing that there are some amazing modders both on here and on sidhe's forums, i really hope that something like this could be done in the near future for the rugby challenge kits because i think it could be possible. What do you think guys?

F**k I am having some fun with this game!!! :) Just some quick questions though: what do the camera sway and close camera options do?

The sway one is so that if you are using the behind view when on the offensive it spins around and your players run downward on the pitch when playing defensively. Close cam is just that, it is very close (which is useless), unless you meant glory cam?

Glory cam I believe is that is zooms in on your player on crucial or breakaway plays. But I'm not sure because I play with sideline view.

Kage
26-10-11, 02:18 PM
Yeah its swing no sway, my bad. Close cameras turns on zoomed in camera angles for things such as kick off etc.

I quite like the glory cam, though I do think it cuts in too often - It's good if you're making a break with the winger, but a couple of times I've made a "break" in my own 22, but it's broken field so there's still 3 or 4 defenders in front of me, but I've no idea where they are because it's zoomed in

Tricia McMillan

So I've been struggling with this game, then checked the controls to see two VERY IMPORTANT keys that aren't covered anywhere in the tutorials:

1) When playing the ball out of a ruck, lineout, maul, or scrum, hitting S and D together passes the ball directly to your fly half.
2) When the ball is lose, hitting R makes your selected player try to dive on the ball.

#1 has helped me SO much, I can actually kick drop goals or be able to kick clearances/bombs with players other than my forwards.
#2 has helped me cover a few frustrating situations where I've had a grubber kick bouncing towards the try line and I'd end up not scoring because my player tried to pick up the ball and failed (only to have it roll dead or get touched down for a 22m drop-out), or they succeeded and carried it dead instead of touching it down to score.

Now my only gripe with the game is that I've missed out on several tries because my player punched it over the line and instead of going straight down to score he spent 10 seconds fighting off the tackler only to carry it dead or into touch in goal. Or knock the ball on.

It's gonna be hard to learn a brand new game, but it's amazing how many thing you will be able to do once learnt controls...
It seems a hard game, and I'll love that.

I'm disappointed about a couple of things:

1 - no game pad support? Keyboard it's the only available controller - anyway, not so bad as I'm gonna keep playing sometimes R06, so no confusion, gamepad for one game, keyboard for the other one.

2 - I don't know why, but I tried to change language (from Italian to English, I prefer as some translation in menu are not good, but after all it's well done) and it didn't worked, and also everytime I change graphic settings, it resets my preferences (Team, offload/hightackle/passing success bars) etc... but not the rosters

It's gonna be a long long work to edit players and teams, some ratings are disappointing, but gameplay, graphic and features are amazing.

Sure I'm gonna love it!

which is the file where all user data (achievments, settings, roster and players mod) are saved?

I just want to save it sometimes for backup, in case of crashing or re-installing...

Ok, so overall I'd give this game a 7.5/10 - which is good. The two strongest features - the fact that it looks great and is enjoyable enough that I consider my money well spent. For Sidhe's first game in the series I want to commend them for an outstanding effort - hopefully if they plan on releasing any more games in the next four years they'll have a fine template to build on.

There are, however, a lot of things to improve, and I don't think there's very much debate here either. I'll start with the easiest:

Customising Game
- Not being able to move players between the Premiership/ Pro12/ Top 14. I can't think of any other games with licensing rules this strict. Needs sorting.
- Not being able to add players to rosters without removing others. This just makes no sense.
- Instead of the 50 or so custom kits sidhe have designed, can we have templates (ie. hoops, quarters etc.) and fill them with whichever colours we want?
- Why did you have to make the unlicensed international kits look like flags? I think I'm playing rugby league every time I play with England...

Customising Players
- There should be a 'scrummaging' attribute, one for 'kick power'. While editing a player's attributes, his overall rating should be shown on the screen.
- An option for players to have tape around their heads
- An option for players to have their socks down

Rosters
- not all European players are that bad. Correcting rosters (and making them up to date for this season, in light of the licensing issues I mentioned above) is taking me AGES.
- For South Africans, I understand not having the license, but could you make all the players as real and then give them a name like T.Mwarirati, a B.de Lespis, a B.Haboona etc. so that it's easier to edit them?

Otherwise, as I said, superb. This next section may prove more difficult to correct:

Gameplay (all noted from playing on Hard)
- Passing. It's incredibly frustrating the amount of simple passes that are chucked miles behind the intended recipient. And no team is capable of scoring some of the tries I concede thanks to incredibly long ambitious passes infield that manage to find their target amongst a sea of my defenders.
- Tackling. Too many tackles are broken, it's unrealistic.
- Knock-ons. Too many knock-ons - unrealistic.
- Scrums. I like this feature, perhaps with a scrummaging stat added the average of the 3 front row players could make the scrum meter faster/ slower for each team depending on how good they are.
- Scoring tries. There needs to be an animation for sliding over the line.
- There needs to be an option for the 10 to sit back in the pocket.
- Drop goals - I don't need to say.
- TMO - when a player knocks on when trying to score, he gets the scrum 5. It should be the defending team.
- Goal kicking. Can you make the ring around which the slider goes darker or just more visible? Sometimes I can't pick it up at all, especially when the whitewash saying 22 is in the way.

Otherwise, as I said it's a fantastic game.

i got the patch, but now an annoying glitch i'm always getting: whenever I tackle a player into touch 5 metre's from my try line, the game will to a 5 metre scrum giving the opposition the ball, even though I tackled the other player 5 metre's from my line, before I was getting weird glitches but they would only happen once or twice, but this glitch happens nearly every time, honestly I've never played a game with this many glitches ever before its crazy

Looks like I won't be getting the game for a while, 'Can You Run It? (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/)' says my laptop does not meet the minimum requirements. I only have a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 video card and it says there should be either NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon HD 3850; bit crap as it also says my video card has more RAM, Pixel Shader and Vertex Shader than the minimum. For Pro12 (and Top14) sides you have to edit each individual player on the national team. I think that you can simply swap Premiership players though.

whilst I am enjoying the game, the bugs and such are utterly ridiculous, such as this. Have you had the one where from a lineout the ball suddenly stops in midair having been thrown by the hookerr, then spins half a dozen loops in the air doing laps round all the players and then suddenly is in the hands of the scrum half. mind boggling, and quite disappointing tbf. Also, have you noticed how, at least on pc, the player never actually kicks the ball, he starts the kicking motion and then the ball just catapults into space. the implication of it seemingly not needing contact with the foot in order to be kicked is that even if you tackle the player a whole second before the ball should be leaving his foot,m the ball still gets 'kicked' .

Whenever i edit a player they loose their commentary name so i have to go back in and change it back...this makes editing anything take twice as long.

Also why do neither game have player form? I think it makes a game so much more real. If you have a lower rated player playing well they will be better than a higher rated player playing badly but in the game you have no reason to use any players other than your best 15, the fatigue in matches doesn't really effect them? Just a thought...other than that i do love the game.

@ Olyy - I had this a lot, and the best way to get around it is when the loading page comes up (just like the intro) then make sure you start pressing up or down on your left stick, i find then that the team will switch before it comes up with that message. So you just have to move onto another team as soon as you can do so. Does that make sense? I'm not sure how it works, but if your team is autoselected (used to be Stade Fracais for me) the lobby for using that team is full?

Don't see that much of a problem with the dummy...
I only tend to dummy if I'm trying to beat the fullback or when the opposition expected me to pass to my winger so sends the tackler straight for him (lot of people use this defensive tactic). Works a charm because they leave such a gaping hole in the defense!

Quitters are frustrating the hell out of me though...dont think Im ever gonna get the 'Complete 25/50 online games' achievements because despite the fact that my win-loss ratio says I've played over 30 games, not all that many have been played through to the 80mins...
Whenever someone quits I send them a message saying 'quitter'...always funny to have an abusive voice message from some random Aussie kid saying there was too much lag :p

man i hate the dummy's, even when its not online, if i'm going to tackle a player, no matter what, as long as he throws a dummy my player stops and moves in the wrong direction, even if the guy doesn't even have players around him, i think its stupid, they could at least tone down how much the player buys the dummy, there's no way my fullback should think the winger is gonna pass to some invisible man, there's a similar glitch with fends, sometimes when you fend it makes your player move really fast and makes the opposition just stand there and watch you go past him.

i only played online once and lost narrowly as france, but it was annoying coz every time it looked like i was gonna have a good over lap and score, the other guy would do a high tackle and stop play

idk if everyone else noticed, but because the positions don't really matter, you can actually play backs as your props, or loose forwards as tight forwards, all that matters is they have to have good strength

I've got to the point now where I'm trying to space my tries out to prevent people quitting, so I'll often let the fullback tackle me and drop a goal or something if I'm already two tries up inside half an hour. Playing against quitters makes the game far, far harder than it otherwise is. I still haven't got the trophy for 50 online matches, despite having 7-odd on my profile. I'm now in the top 600 worldwide, so that's something to be proud of too. I'm going to try and climb some more before I get drawn into Zelda tomorrow.

anyone know how make the game more realistic ?cause really, theres no structured backlines and why does pc offload the ball a 100yard across the field all the time. it seems like a whole new brand of rugby,, i mean theres guys standing all over the place not even tackling a player who steps someone else right infront of him, u even get guys running through other guys and drop goals, they come out of nowhere not even from a pocket just a random guy running away from my guys., i'm not impressed by this game really, i'l stick to rugby 08.
1 thing i have to admit is the running physics of the game is very well done

Also some of the ratings are really stupid, M.Tuilagi 66? He has been playing superb for a season, and then they rate C.Wade 74, which I think is deserved but that is no comparison at all? haha YA and no quick lineouts,, scrums and lineouts and even kicking is really bad. I know no one listen to the comentators ,but they just talk aload of crap. saying its a penalty when its just a free kick. and why on earth are the backline so disfuntional and out of place, we had a better backline in school rugby like in grade3!

Just think of it as a Sevens game but with 15 players, the lack of structure and forwards all in the back line its pretty much sevens. The players positions don't even matter, you can put any player in any position, I use strong backs or loose forwards as my props and hooker haha, just makes it more fun and more like a Sevens game. I like the lineouts in this game, definitely better than the world cup game, but the only problem is how you can't go into a driving maul, but being able to move the pods and make any of the pods tap it down to the back line is much better then the world cup games line outs, and once again it exactly what happens in the line outs for Sevens games, the way the scrums move so far is stupid but at least the scrums are actually competitive unlike the world cup game, just keep playing and you'll get used to it

Perhaps you confuse correcting the spread of inaccurate information for being upset.

To address the original question, the only bias here was in knowledge levels, and to counter that we engaged consultants and got data from the proper sources. Sometimes, as was the case with the USA Eagles roster, the official sources requested we do things a certain way, and as a result things weren't quite as expected by fans. Sometimes we were provided with very little reference material, or got it too late in the process to fully implement it. I'm not sure what the case is with that one side, but I can assure you that we didn't actively favour Southern Hemisphere sides.

Nah, I'm not confused at all. Rating NPC sides better then 90% of the HEC roster is farcical. Or screwing up basics, susch as making Gavin Henson English.

I'm also correct about Mario. He does like to chuck his tidy out the pram.

I enjoy playing friends etc. But at the moment im just very dissapointed at how it plays there is no structure, the pc just offloads, offloads, offloads, offloads. Also some of the ratings are really stupid, M.Tuilagi 66? He has been playing superb for a season, and then they rate C.Wade 74, which I think is deserved but that is no comparison at all? Just a quick example, also the whole SH is pretty overpowered, McCaw can outsprint C.Ashton. And im pretty sure Ashton outsprinted both O'Conner and Mitchell last year so either McCaw is a speeddemon and just doesn't show it in games or... :p.
That is ridiculous, agreed. My friend was playing as the Crusaders and I was Gloucster, and Sharples and Simpson-Daniel (My wingers) were both slower than their entire backrow. (Read is quite quick for a forward, but nowhere near Sinbad or Sharples' pace) In fact, Sharples is rated pretty terribly, I think his speed was only just better than Owen Franks...

I'm not sure what this means. If you mean toys, Mario has an incredibly calm, almost deadpan demeanour, so any toy throwing is imagined. I'm not sure what the rest of your post has to do with mine, so I'll wait for you to clarify before I respond to it.

I know that most of the NPC sides include NZ player within them thus raitings will be boosted a bit but considering the NZ players hardly ever play in the NPC (from what I've seen.. the big guys anyway like Carter etc.) They shouldnt be as high as they are..

Well, I've spent a lot of my time editing this game, a process that was made even longer by the ridiculous RaboDirect/ Top14 transfer restrictions. However, the gameplay is strange but it is good enough and it is enjoyable. I can throw big miss passes and send a winger flying into the corner, and what's more, it's actually a challenge. Rugby 08 on the hardest setting was too easy; I play this on HARD and mostly win, but occasionally things can conspire against me and I'll lose. Matches between equally matched teams are usually close as well.

So, once you've taken the time to edit this game, it's worth it.

Sidhe take note - I'm sure you're 'good people' but next time you make a game, make sure the stats are roughly in line with what global public opinion believes, make sure the team rosters are up to date for the season in which you sell the game, and can you please allow us more editing with the kits? I can't abide playing with an England team that looks like it's fallen out of the RL world cup, and it's not much better now I've given it an all white kit with a silly amount of red trim.

I was getting a bit irritated offloads but once I got the patch 2.0 it's MUCH better. Adjusted the sliders and now I'm have some great games with a good amount of offloads but players are taking contact more. Turnovers still seem to be a problem area but its not too over bearing.

This is a great rugby game, it really is. Sidhe deserve a lot of credit for a sterling effort. This game will be a good platform for the next game as I think the mechanics of the game are solid.

Yes you can, I have done the Sharks, and the Cheetahs, Stormers, and Bulls are on the Sidhe forums.

Finally managed to blag a free copy for PC the other day, so wayhey! I'm getting good at this blagging free games malarkey.

My assessment - It's okay I suppose. Has the feel of potential, but get's let down by niggling things which make me want to throw the PC out of the window.

The good:

Visuals - Crisp looking, generally slick presentation. the fifa-like Arena part is a neat touch
Player models - Very Sharp on the players correctly modelled, mostly editable to get them near or near-enough for the rest.
Animations - Little details when juggling the ball and facial expressions make the difference on the replays - bugger all on gameplay, but they help the presentation elsewhere.
Collision mechanics - Clever bouncing off players and body twists thanks to the game engine give it a feel of involvement. The fall off and run through is a neat touch (but since when has Chris Ashton ran through a player, he runs around[/i] them normally).
Competitions - Plenty of them. Sadly they don't cross pollinate but it's a good start.
The dummy - Completely useless but looks nice if you're going for a pretty replay.
The replays - Very slick
Gameplay:
1. The kicking system at goal is excellent (albeit easy). From hand it's also good.
2. The scrums add a competition to the game, although thee's no finesse to it - Since when has every single scrum in history resulted in a 5-10m shove backwards?
3. The "not straight" mechanic of the lineout.
4. Rucks - It's a good system, but needs a lot of tweaking. Clunky.
No bunching - Unlike the HB series

[U]The not-so good

Research - Okay, the rosters are from last year. Fine, it's a starting point.. At least get them correct, there's hardly a lack in sources of information.
Research bias - Any chance us Noerhern Peons could have a bit of accuracy at least with starting lineups. Even if the players look nothing like their real life counterparts? Also, Props do not (NOT) out-run wingers. Ever. Even if they hail from the Southern Hemisphere. Geddit?
Commentary - Auful. Clunky. Off.
Passing - It's either magnet passing or chucking it 10m behind your man airgo into touch or ready for a turnover and opposition try. Nothing otherwise.
Defending - Why is it such a faff? 2buttons with no describable difference between either - Both will do bum all as the opposition runs through your player.
Animations - STOP. AUTO. ANIMATING. EVERYTHING. STOP. MAKING THE PLAYER. CHARGE. THE. WRONG. WAY. OH. LOOK. ANOTHER. UNBREAKABLE. TACKLE. ANIMATION.
Quick ball - Still yet to have one. Even on easy. Using the ABs vs a crappy team. Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.
Crowds - Aren't the stadia supposed to have them? I initially thought this was a cute touch to recreate Vicarage Road, but they's all empty stadia.
Offloads - Oh stop it. 10 times in a row? Really?
Support play - Rugby is a structured game which occasionally gets broken and loose. Not the other way around. Why are my backs in midfield and fatties on the wing every time?
Super-Players - Ashton gets the ball. Ashton scores. Foden gets the ball. Foden Scored. Yep. It happens.
Keyboard controls - Whoever arranged this finger knotting experience needs a punch in the mouth. This person is the spawn of the devil.
Player select - What is the point of the left/right player select without the ball? I wan't whoever's closest to it!
No fluitity - unlike HB series

Overall:
Enjoyable enough, but then again I didn't pay for it. I suspect my opinion would be much more negative if I'd shed 50 notes for the experience. There are plenty of good ideas, but it's clear that the DNA still firmly lies in the Rugby League series which drags it down (instead of the tackles and step-overs taking an eternity on RL2, it's the ruck system on this while the AI clunks and stutters it's way into life for the next phase).

If that gameplay engine can be fixed to sort out the fluidity (while at the same time, tightening it up - difficult balancing act, I know) while tweaking the other mechanics, it has a lot of scope. Right now, this is a first attempt possibly trying too much at once.

Give it a score? D+.
Okay, as it's Christmas

1. Try doing the kicks on harder modes, its a lot harder

Defending - I think its also the way you steer the tackle, on playstation you have to tap x in the tackle as well to stop them from breaking through
Quick ball - If there aren't many defenders around just press the heavy bind button once or twice and the quick bind once, thats how you get quick ball
Crowds - the attendance varies, unlike other games its not always a full stadium, i think it might depend on how your performing idk but there are people in the stadium when i play
player select - You know theres a button you can press that does select the player closest to the ball right?

To address the original question, the only bias here was in knowledge levels, and to counter that we engaged consultants and got data from the proper sources. Sometimes, as was the case with the USA Eagles roster, the official sources requested we do things a certain way, and as a result things weren't quite as expected by fans. Sometimes we were provided with very little reference material, or got it too late in the process to fully implement it. I'm not sure what the case is with that one side, but I can assure you that we didn't actively favour Southern Hemisphere sides.

While this may come across as somewhat terse a response to this comment, I feel that having spent £90 on two copies of this game (one for myself, one for a friend) I am most certainly entitled to provide feedback. And, quite frankly, I find your response to be insulting at best and downright fictitious at worst.

Whilst I am sure that there are always going to be discrepancies when it comes to the smaller nations, making His Holliness Richie McCaw quicker than a significant number of NH backs is nonsensical. To have his pace rivalling that of some of his own AB back-line just goes to show how misguided these stats are.

No-doubt, you'll hide behind the fact that these numbers were collated from other sources, but when I buy a product - and one at a high price - the only way you'll have me coming back for more is to ensure a modicum of accuracy. Quite why it is so difficult to work out that a winger - albeit one from the vastly inferior NH - and one who is known for his blistering pace, is worth more than a measly 63 for his pace is beyond me. I don't want excuses, I want it right. Sharples was in the initial England squad, for pete's sake.

Generally, i'm fond of the game. Very, very annoying that there is no pickup from the scrum and I can barely be bothered to pass the ball out to the wing, as i'll have my front row loitering with intent, but there are some reasonable foundations. That said, if you can't be bothered to get the players correct, not sure I can be bothered to part with my hard-earnt next time around.

I have not yet brought it, largely due to errors like this, but will say what I said when I first heard of this sort of stuff; fans will do this for free and they do will do it better. Just ask SI Games.

Precisely. Would be happy to help with the oft-ignored Worcester. Pretty sure that even I can spot that Kvesic isnt a winger and Benjamin doesn't really have the height to play at lock.

Further to this, its generally safe to assume that the lower-level players will still have ome semblance of expected ability. For instance, while the German winger probably arent great tacklers, passer, etc, they are probably still reasonably quick.

The crappy stats have been discussed to death, but it might help if they developed the right categories for them as well.

For example, how do I show on the game that Mike Ross is a superior prop than Cian Healy?? Healy in real life is an excellent carrier and tackler, but crap in the scrum. Ross is a solid scrummager but not great around the park, but there's no 'Scrummaging' stat... the only way I can show his scrummaging prowess is to up his 'Strength' stat to higher than that of Healy's - but that is probably inaccurate in terms of pure strength. This game is groundbreaking as the first rugby game to treat the scrum properly - why not continue this commitment by making the prop position in-game actually worthwhile, because usually teams are stronger with flankers in the front row.

Equally, the Warburtons and Brussows of this world are not as strong, or as good at tackling, as the Kainos and Juan Smiths. But they're quality at getting turnovers/ in support etc. How do I show this? Surely there should be a 'Rucking' stat. And a 'Support' stat, which could also make Ashton considerably better than Varndell, even if his speed/ acceleration/ agility is worse..

What is 'Mental Agility'? I've given players like Cooper and Cipriani high scores for this, assuming it means creativity. But it could go to the likes of Dusautoir - 'big game players'. I don't know.

Kicking. HB had this right - a stat for power, a stat for goalkicking, and a stat for handkicking. RC has no indication that the Steyns and Trailles of this world can bang a kick from 50m, but not very straight.

Handling. There's a passing stat, and a catching stat, although I assume the latter is designed for lineouts. I want to be able to distinguish between Dwayne Peel, who has an excellent pass; Maxime Mermoz who has a lovely pair of hands; Delon Armitage who is superb under a high ball; and Nick Kennedy who's athletic in the lineout.

just some thoughts..

Very good point on the specialised stats - Tony Buckley is a very strong person, however he is not a good scrummager. I can either have him weak as a kitten around the pitch or have him a rock in the scrum....

While this may come across as somewhat terse a response to this comment, I feel that having spent £90 on two copies of this game (one for myself, one for a friend) I am most certainly entitled to provide feedback. And, quite frankly, I find your response to be insulting at best and downright fictitious at worst.

In fact, people who have played a game at a friend's house and not spent a cent are entitled to express their views and give feedback. I'm not sure why you would feel I have somehow denied your entitlements in some way, but I have no wish to suppress your views. I also had no intent to insult or deceive. I'm sorry you think I did.

I mean the crowd is literally not there. Even for the ABs.

I like the game, don't love it but like it.

I still can't figure out how to set a maul on purpose. It seems to be willy nilly. I certainly can't figure it out at the line out.

Help?

You can enable it in the settings editor. It will have been disabled because the installer would have checked your computer's specifications at installation, and set it up to be optimal.

Like I say, probably came across as a little more terse than desired, but maybe justified. For you to say that theres no NH/SH bias seems to either be naivety or a bit of a fib. The sheer difference in quality and appropriate levels of statistical ability is pretty shocking. Now I'm not going to hark on about it, as its clearly been done to death, but having to change the rosters is a pain in the ass. I'm not exactly sure of the penetration that current gen consoles have into the southern hemisphere population, but seeing as its pretty high in western europe, i'd say that at least getting the stats right would be a starting point.

Plenty of good, of course. Love the kicking slow-mo; perhaps the way to differentiate between the good and the bad kickers would be the extent to which it slows? Your Mornes of this world would have super slow-mo to really place the kick, whereas my front row - who, incidentally, seem to get the ball from a ruck, despite pressing the flyhalf pass combination - shouldnt have any real chance to pick and place the kick.

Please re-read my original post. I did not claim a complete lack of bias. I stated the manner and source of the bias.

If you aware of the bias - which, quite frankly, you must've been - where was the quality control? I can understand the licence issue, that happens, but why wasn't the qulaity of the information ever checked?

Ditto.
I don't sit there for hours playing it, however I'll load it up and play a few games (normally the upcoming fixtures in the heineken/aviva/whatever) then leave it at that.
Still have fun with it though

Over Christmas I had a number of three-or-four hours sessions on RC with my brother running through career mode. I think we got 3 whole seasons done over the holidays and even signed Andy Powell.

We were aware of the knowledge deficit, so we engaged Northern Hemisphere consultants. Apparently this was not entirely effective, but please rid yourself of the idea that we just don't care and didn't bother to try and avoid bias in the final product.
