yeah nah they requested a mailing address to forward the demo once it is available.....

this to me means it is a shipping issue, or something small anyway, in which they can rectify thru the mail

however this is all null and void if it comes in the mail after full release of the game

i just hope it comes in the mail b4 march 1st now...........if it comes in the mail at all.

either way i am still going to the camp coz u can still play the game there.
i'll test it out and piss off, and let the kids have a go (i know 1000's will turn up).
and i'll also interrogate them on when the demo will be available and why we aint getting in my showbag as promised.

i reckon a demo will be in a mag very soon, and i'lll find out, if they tell me anything...perhaps i'll just walk up to gorge smith and ask him.....he is the spokesperson, and he wont spit shit...will tell it how it is, black and white

do we need to go if they going to send us the demo in the mail?

no i dont think so

they asked for a mailing address in the email, so i do not think u need to go to the camp to get the demo in the mail.
i am going to the camp just to play the game, and to find out exactly whats doing with the demo....and maybe some autographs (if i can be assed),, for my jersey

As much as I want to believe you kinkon, it's fairly alarming that Locks couldn't find them. (how many versions of the game are out there???)

World league is everything u want it to be - 3 divisions, etc etc
lions tours on NZ, Australia and Sout Afrika
we have sliders for knock-ons, fatigue and injuries
mins per half - 5, 10, 15, 20............no 40min half
u can select a radar/map for the game, like pes4.
everything locksleys said on gameplay is true
i just went and searched the ins/outs that wasnt confirmed
any questions on anything pls feel free to ask

How does the analoge sticks work when attacking?

eg press up to handof
left to duke

or is it just random what move you do

Brumbies_05

sound awsome now that I hear it from people who don't make a living off the game I will buy it. When u picked your teams about how many players were in each squad. And is the kicking system that bad

ak47
09-02-05, 07:41 PM
Analogue

Fowards = attacking barge
Backwards = Fend
Up = step
Down = step

obviously depends which direction on the screen u r running
If using behind cam, switch them around
ie - up would be forwards and right and left would be the step button

hit stick = no, seems to be replaced by x button big hit
squad selection similar to 2004, about 25-30 players

Great news, kinky and ak47! So, out of three legit players (you lot and Locks) we've got three great reviews. Nice.

Questions:

What difficulty did you play it on?

Since no license for the Euro Trophy, are they generic kits and emblems?

What was your favorite aspect of the game overall?

I played on normal difficulty but only played 2 player
Didnt check if generic kits for EURO, but for menu looked like 2004 EURO comp

Fave aspect = the running game.......its soo smooth and silky, like 2001, but easy to stop and change direction, unlike 2001....u can run 360 different angles, which is how the analogue is meant to be used..........ie i was running angles towards the sideline, and it look as tho i was going to go out of bounds, but i straighened up and tightroped the sideline, hit the turbo and off i went.......too fast, my support was too far behind...........so i eased on the turbs, drew in the FB, and as i eased off the turbs my winger caught up to me, and as the FB drew closer i let this ripper of a pass in the inside, to my winger that had cross over as i squeezed him from the sideline 30m back upfield........if u can picture this, be prepared coz it happens and its that good, and on replay u cream ur pants at how good it looks, and the crowds reaction as ur winger receives the final pass, with nobody in front of him....holy shiiiit!!!!

WE PLAYED ABOUT 5 MATCHES

I was NZ (89), Australia (88) and England (90+)

Haka rules man.
Tana Umaga is a beast and so is Rocko!
Lote Tiquiri will be ur mates worst nightmare aswell
Once u do training the whole control factor opens up and u learn the step and fends etc
one of my mates started a world league, and was getting smashed

England had 90+ rating but i am sure the lions will be better
kicking is tragic........there's no doubt about it..........whether or not u can attack with the kicking game i dunno, but would be surprised.
maybe on behind cam the kickin game could work better but on side cam, u cant even tell where it will and...........the arc goes out of the screen and there's no line/shadow to show u the angle its on..........heaps deceptive and crap

The World Cups sound interesting. I can't imagine you had a go on any of them as they'd take ages --- but, do you know if Jonah Lomu is present at all in the game?

The reason I ask is that it might mean they've included old rosters for the older tournaments instead of having to use fecking 2005 players in 1999.

Also, 2007 . . . who's to say Chile won't beat the States and make it in . . . wonder if they've got a qualifying round (doubt it) or have Chile available to play?

I'm just thinking out loud, ak, but if you can answer/speculate/bs your way through any of those questions that'd be cool.

couldnt hear crowds chants - 30 tvs, 15 ps2's and 15xbox's means u couldnt hear anything...it was all noise.....only a little commentary was clear to hear, otherwise there was too much noise in the room.

jonah lomu = no, i couldnt find him under nz, or hurricanes
i doubt they are old rosters, i think we just get the old draw and pools for the old RWC's.
for 2007 - yeah i assumed the draw and qualifying must be complete for them to have this.......but if not, EA must have just used their imagination.

theres a trophy room to view all ur trophys and there's a tonne of them.......made me think u gotto do each 3 RWC's, which would be cool!
also a stats/achievement page, like in 2004, only it looks like FIFA and other EA products...........it all class in the menus boys, feels like madden!!!

if anyone can remem any extra international teams at all, please let us know...

would be a bit disappointed if only the 20 RWC teams were included - didn't they include more in R2004... about 24/5 or thereabouts ?

cheers for all the info dudes, shame about the kicking game, but perhaps with extended use and plenty of training (great addition) with the right camera angle, some of is will be able to make better use of it

a very grey area IMO - i need more time

Rucks were very fiddly - u could tell why u lost it, isolation, or powered over, or big hit lose ball, but i couldt grasp what the ruck metre was trying to tell me.
Unfortunately from my experience rucks R NOT won on skill, but won on the lead-up to the ruck.....ie if ur momentum bar is up, and u play proper phased rugby with numbers at the breakdown, u will never lose a ruck, unless the defense uses the big hit tackle (like WCR), only u lose the ball 75% of the time (with the option of the knock on slider keep in mind)
if u never chose a set play, the ball would go to ground the rugby was ugly
just like 2004, at the base of the ruck
square - #9 picks and runs left
circle - #9 picks and runs right

also i do believe L2 and R2 do pop up passes to forwards on the hit-up from the base of the ruck, where'as L1 and R1 pass to the backs - like 2004

well if u running left to right on the screen (side cam), up on the analogue would be sidestep

if ur running up and down (behind cam), up would be forwards

Hopefully a straight forward question.

Can you modify the controls?

I want to buy the xbox version, but the ps2 with the 2 shoulder buttons is often nicer for rugby games. What I've found is that the white and black buttons on the xbox controller are a right pain to use a lot. So I'm worried that the black and white buttons might end up being a more commonly used or something more useful than the standard abyx buttons.

Any idea what the xbox controls are like??

forget the xbox mate
the controls are shot and cannot be changed - i could not find a controller setup within the game at all.
the xbox version for passing uses the face buttons where square and circle are on ps2 - it has to be a tragic set-up - i cannot comprehend not using shoulder buttons for passing
this idiot tried to tell me the controls on ps2 were square and circle for passing, coz thats what they r on xbox (the corresponding buttons anyway)
but low and behold r1 and L1 was pass on the ps2, so its all good, and that idiot should be fired.
the xbox version looked alot better visually, but the TV's we used werent on the greatest contrast and sharpness setting...one TV was so blurry u couldnt read the small writing.

Ah yes! They are there (The Pacific Islanders that is!!!) On my version tho, the all blacks are rated a massive 91 and you can't choose the Lions from the off in the representative section!

As for the Xbox version! I can't believe they'd make X and B pass buttons!!!! That's just ridiculous!

My mate is a massive JLR fan and he is hugely interested in Rugby games! He thought 2001 was ok, HATED rugby 2004, thought WCR was ridiculously arcadey and he's not too sure about Rugby 2005!!!!

He said that after extended play, there were some annoying things becoming apparent! Such as: (In his own words)

Tackle animations that stop you passing!
The attacker slows slightly to allow the diving tackler to hit you
The rucks are completely Random
You don't need to step, fend or charge to play, in fact, it does nothing to help!
No offloads
Abslolute shocking kicking system
Far too many penalties for offsides
The defending really stinks! Especially when the attack is using a set play

And, after a few more games (and him losing, it has to be said), he threw his pad down and said "That's it for me! No way am I buying that SHIT when it comes out! Do you know what???? It's like Rugby 2004 but with better tackling and better running."

I couldn't believe he'd said that! I was really, really enjoying it. Taking my time, building phases and keeping my defence incredibly strong! He must've had a bad day! He is right with some of the things he's mentioned, but I think he's being way too harsh! And it does get more noticable the more you play! But, it's still the best Rugby game I've played yet, and I'm looking forward to buying the Xbox version when it comes out.

this idiot tried to tell me the controls on ps2 were square and circle for passing, coz thats what they r on xbox (the corresponding buttons anyway)

Did you actually play the box version at the training camp? Or is this purely going
off what you got told?? I think I'll choose to believe that the guy is an idiot(as you said) and didn't know any of the controls.

X and B would be stupid as the pass buttons. [/b][/quote]
i kid u not thats what the xbox controls are

its that stupid, it nearly unbelievable, so i see why u continue to persist
i never played the xbox version but i saw plenty of people that did, and they were hitting face buttons to pass the ball, not shoulder buttons

When you think about it you know, that's not such a bad idea after all!!!!

Saves you having to find the black button to sprint, take your finger off it, tap stick to step, put finger back on! This way, the right trigger will run and the left trigger will change player! I could get used to that! They'd probably use black and white for grubber and bomb!

Are the Newport Dragons in the european / heinekan cup section

Also could you explain the differnce between forwards and up on the anologe stick
Well the Dragons were in the comp both in 2003/4 and this year, so even if the squads are out of date by a season... you'll still get them

... interestingly, if the squads are out by a year and the european 2003/4 teams are used, it'll allow us to use the Celtic Warriors team as a spare team (seeing as they dissolved) to fiddle with the squad as we see fit to create any other team (tho the name, jersey etc will remain)

... I do think that we'll have this years teams tho - the fact that one of the teams involved in 2003/4 dissolved means they could hardly include them... could they?

As for the Xbox version! I can't believe they'd make X and B pass buttons!!!!* That's just ridiculous!*
It feels good to be a PS2 owner now. Sounds like it is a much better lay out than XBox.

Tackle animations that stop you passing!
Yeah, that is a bit of a problem but oh well.
The attacker slows slightly to allow the diving tackler to hit you
Oh well, better than the magical tackle physics of other games.
The rucks are completely Random
Really? Do you think so too locksley? They look good to me, if you're isolated you lose just like real rugby. Is this guy a league fan by any chance?
You don't need to step, fend or charge to play, in fact, it does nothing to help!
I hope that's not true.
No offloads
Again, a bit of a problem but oh well.
Abslolute shocking kicking system
Seems that several people don't like this, I didn't think it was that bad in the videos.
Far too many penalties for offsides
Surely that's his problem? He just needs to get back onside.
The defending really stinks! Especially when the attack is using a set play
Really?

raziel_eire

seems like all that dudes views are a bit extremist

... there are some tackles in real life that stop you passing
... as JJ said
... others have said the rucks are quite tactical (and true to real life)
... you don't need to do any of those things to play in real life either, but they help - I reckon in the game they will help in some situations (the right situations!)
... well we've known this for a while, a bit problematic, but just pass a spilt second earlier
... agree with JJ, it doesn't seem too bad, perhaps difficult and not as much distance as you like, but still useable after you get used to it I hope(the AI used it reasonably well in the Chiefs v Blues match video)
... get onside then?
... locksley has said the defending can be quite enjoyable when u're used to it

... seems like the dude just wasn't keen on the game (perhaps he does prefer League) from the start

I agree with locksley. The controls won't be too bad on Xbox. It's just very different which put me off at first. But when you really think about it, you should be able to get used to it.

Still getting it on PS2 though.

so what happens to the full version of games after the training camp? did wilson get to take them all away with him again for the next camp in a different city or do the guys at the place/store get to keep them for themselves... and if so, some one of you guys must know somebody, who knows somebody who works there - possible of a more hands on with the game perhaps?

also, if thats the full game that you dudes got to play at the camp... why are EA gonna make us wait another month to buy it if its already fit to go - its not as tho they are gonna make any changes to the gameplay at this late stage (kicking?)... fair enough if there are another few camps to get through, but release the game in late Feb, not mid-late March !!!

please ?

I think the reason its march and not now is down to marketing - they need to design and print the packaging, posters, arrange distribution etc - so you can see there is a fair amount of work to do before they can actually release the game onto the market. This is why there is a significant window between game completion and release date.

raziel_eire
10-02-05, 04:04 PM
yeah, but they've had the images for the box art up since early January... its not as tho there is alot of designing to go into an EA product, they have a generic white/plain background, featured player Rugby 2005 logo - all of which has been seen (not the NZ one tho?) for quite some time.
The info on the back of the box has also been on the go for quite a while too, it was featured on pre-book boxes in a game store down in Aus that someone on the form got mobile phone pictures from.

So if that was all done before January's end there should not be that much more to do. Perhaps the booklet had to be worked on, but if its like any other EA game, they will follow a fairly generic formula for that and it won't be the most in depth booklet youll ever see.

Fair enough about the distribution, though I doubt it takes 2 months to organise???

... would dearly like the game as soon as posibble as opposed to waiting for EA to decide when would suit them best financially... anyways, my questioning is not gonna change anything - I'll have to wait like the majority of others here to get a taste of the game

(and I really hope that my first taste is not a 1 half playable demo!)

For those with controller issues about the X-Box version, I know there is a device you can buy for the X-Box which allows you to plug in a PS2 controller and set which buttons do what. It plugs into the controller port and the PS2 controller.
This may sort out any major issues people have with the X-Box controls.

Serious question -- did Rugby 2005 succeed at all with the weather conditions?

I remember in Lomu they offered playing in the South African sunshine, or the grey cover of Englands clouds, etc -- which, though very small and simple -- added a brilliant touch and was quite nice.

Anyway, has anyone come across this in the different venues they've played?

It comes down to timing. But the learning curve is hard, you have take the below into consideration.

- Attacking Strength
- Defenders Strength
- Timing
- Speed

Out of th 3 fends i actually got in 2 hours of playing only one of them was worth a mention, the other two were stock standard pushes ala Rugby 2001. The one im refering to is quite incredible because i pressed the analog stick at the same time as been tackled then a few frames later the tackler just got pushed away. One second i thought i was tackled then next thing you ive brushed a tackler away. Brilliant.

Its going to take alot time to master but you will have to know the capablilites of each player in the squad.

Single player was hard on normal. No easy tries, just solid rugby.

Also i wanted to say that the best team in Rugby 2005 is England again. There stat was like 93 and England have lost like 7 of the last 12 games (Dumb). New Zealand was the only other team above 90 at 91, Aust was 87. Wierd. In the rankings England is like 4th now, they should base it on them as a team but use strong individual stats.

Note that the games we played at the Show in Sydney are NTSC compatiable. I noticed this when the Xbox had been reset. This means the game is a bit faster than PAL but not as smooth.

P.S. I have just booked holidays around the release of this game, so I can train up to be a true Rugby Jedi. Sure I have a life, but I am certain not even the people who made Rugby for PS2 could beat me. And Rugby 2004? Well, it makes a great coaster.

Good man thats just what i hoped to hear! I don't know about you but i've found all the previous rugby games too shallow, and easy to master. I never played JLR much so this could be the exception.

wen i was playing at training camp my best try was wen i skinned down the sideline after recieving a gap ball then it came 2 on 1 and passed it into my support player unfortunately recieving a big late tackle from the fullback which resorted into an injury
but i still go the try.......i felt like jumping up and screaming thats how real it is!
