thinking of getting back into playing, i've been out for a good 8 years and although i'm not that small 5'11, 80kgs the guys at the local club are all quite meaty, i think i got some speed on my side. I was running about 11sec flat for the 100m at high school, once i get some speed training in I dont eckon i'll be too far off that pace, how quick are the amatuers playing now?

I can do the 100m in about 11.2 seconds. Could probably be faster with a bit of training, but I'm more focused on my defence at the minute. I couldn't tackle a tipsy toddler.

11 flat is pretty fast.

I do it in mid to low 12s.

I don't think I can walk 100m, let alone run 100m.

I used to play prop, so speed was never my forte.

When you talk about running 100m in 11s where are you running?
On a track or on grass?
Coz there's quite a difference between the two.

I clocked 11.5 on grass in the summer, which is faster grass or track?

Track.
If you're 11.5 on grass i'd say you're a pretty quick lad.

I'll share that sentiment.

I'm probably a bit slower actually, I've been compared to Will Greenwood before - build for handling not raw speed.

Makes me sound like a German car.

I proberbly couldn't even run 100m these days. Too much beer and pies.

I just cant run at the mo :( Leg is well and truely f***ed...

Pretty fast when I get moving, but being a lock it was never really a required strength... although once I got going I could be quite destructive...

I was timed 11s on track, but i'm weak as hell.
I am the Welsh Shane Williams.
Wait...bugger.
I'm stuck on 110kg 1 rep max on the bench press and 160kg on squat.

My lack of strength annoys me sometimes.
All the time, actually.

Stopped playing due to injury about 2 yrs back, was champ of district at High School - clocked a 10.8sec for 100m on track, dunno what my speed on grass was though, but i could hold my own against most opponents.

One things for sure though, South Africa have a hell of alot of fast players!

Oh, before I forget, I am 1,79m tall, weighed 82kgs at my fastest.

yeah i was running barefoot on grass, the ground in S.A is much harder than here in the UK so my time wouldn't be much faster on a track

someone mentioned earlier that they're not that strong with a 110kg bench and 140kg squat

those lifts are identical to mine, i'm 180cm (5'11) 78kgs

i reckon i need to get to 83/84 kgs to before i feel comfortable throwing myself in front of a 100kg prop

Tackling's more about attitude anyway.

Nothing gives me more satisfaction than seeing a big prop's face when a tiny guy brings him down! :)

Im no slouch, but im not really fit enough, im much better over shorter distances, give me a few yards of space and i can go the length of the pitch..... trouble is its all over after that and i can't do anything for the next 30 mins :P

Being a cyborg from the future does help, doesn't it. I just forget sometimes because I feel so human...I blame it on all the John Mayer they play on the radio.

I think the important thing in a rugby sense is how fast you are over say 10-15 metres. Its explosive pace that matters to the rugby player, obviously i have this in abundance being a 6 foot 16 stone Tighthead prop!

11.2 secs on grass (180 cm, 81 kg) - we used to run across the cricket crease, because nobody in Ireland has use for such a thing.

Anybody got a link to standardised times for the fastest players today - or would that just be a load of hype to intimidate the opposition?

They say David Wallace, Ireland's flanker, is the fastest in the international squad.

Brian Habana looks the speediest to me.

yeah i'm a winger hence the name :P
the name is cos i don't lift my feet that high when i run so i kind of glide lol

We're doing 3 man tackle tunnels at school at the moment so my tackling is improving, slowly but surely, anyone got any tips specificly for tall thin yet fast players.

cheers guys

Drink as much beer as you can, as often as possible. Follow this with a copious amount of pasty eating and with a little dedication and time maybe someday youll attain the ultimate goal of becoming............................ A PROP!

Actually the world record is currently held by Jamaica's Asafa Powell at 9.77 seconds. 10 seconds flat is good enough to consider being an olympian though. I do believe Tom Varndell is reputed to have clocked a 10.1 or 10.2 on grass in his socks. watching him play I do believe it even though he can't really play. Maybe he should go to the olympics.

varndell is an awesome sight to see in full flight..

but come on kiddies...jonah takes the cake in his hey days...6ft5 and unning at his speed...freak of nature fo sho!

my best time ever was 13seconds when i was 16 on grass..not bad for a prop...lost alotta long range speed..short distances im ok...need 2 lay off tha bees for abit

Yes, but Habana did 10 flat on grass, which would convert to nearing world record pace on track

That's fine, I'm just pointing out that his 10 seconds on grass although it might convert to very freakin fast, but not quite world record stuff.

Yes but Habana is a ball hog and greedy which cancels out his blinding speed as he won't pass when it counts (i.e. when you have two or three of the opposite team in front of you) cos Brian Habana HAS to get that try!

In their defeat to England last year South Africa could have scored two extra tries if it wern't for Habana wanting to keep all the scores for himself. I bet he'd try and take the kicks too if he could.
