Don't know how this player is perceived all around the world, but in France, he is recognized as one of the best. Former frenchs players like Denis Charvet or Serge Blanco himself even claims that is simply the best player in the world ! Or at least, the best fullback. And commentators always emphasize on the fact that this is a real chance to have him in our "Top 14".

At the dawn of the world cup, where Argentina can make an upset in the pool of death, what do you think of him ? True genius, talented player but not so much, overated… ? Better at 10 or 15 ?

A few clips for those who don't know him…

I must agree with those sentiments he is the best No. 15 in the world for me. Haven't seen much of him at 10 but I am sure he is very capable in that position also.

He's definately one of my favourite players at the moment, but I don't he's yet done enough to displace Latham as the best fullback in world rugby.

Saw the guy come on against Northampton though, and he looked a cut above everyone on the pitch playing at 13. Frightening to think what he could do if he was to be used properly.

Is this the same guy that wants to join Leicester so he can get more game time at No.10??

Stillknox
26-07-07, 01:38 AM
Yes he is.

Apparently, he will finally stay with le Stade Français... wich is a little surprising, Leicester's offer was big and moreover, there are two others internationals n°10 in Paris, Skrela and Beauxis so I don't see him play at this position so often.

Juggernaut
26-07-07, 05:02 AM
What is surprising is that most notable former players (Blanco being a fullback himself) has touted him to be one of the best in that position, BUT why does he insist on switching to 5/8??

I watched the Youtube video and did some googling, he could be the worlds best come RWC time. He's got the speed, strength, defence, kicking game & the flair to shine for the Argies. His time in the Top 14 has greatly develop his skills...

i would place him as n°15 for paris and n° 10 for argies. just seen him this year in h-cup and he's been huge at fullback. but for the argies he would be much more competitiv as n°10 as he has an enormous kick (prob the best power together with traille and beauxis in the top 14) and as the argies don't have a big n°10 (on contrary to paris). he's defenetly been one of top 14 best players this year.

He and Latham are great players. But Hernandez at #10 against France or Ireland? He's not proven in that position - so, either Hernandez or the nutty professor, Conti, at the helm will be ... interesting.

He won´t play at 10. Here my prediction for Pumas backs:

9 Pichot
10 Todeschini
11 Corleto
12 Contepomi
13 Tiesi
14 Nunez Piosez or Borges
15 Hernandez

And, yes. Hernandez it a t trully class player with the talent to be among the greatests.

I'm agree with you Paquirri.

I Think that Fullback is the best position for Hernandez. In this case, I think he's the best back player in the world.

bapt

His best position is fullback. He isn't good enough on kicking to play nr. 10.
But he's a great player with a very good flair.

Hernandez is awesome.. Haven't seen him enough on the international stage (as goes for most argentinian players thanks to the idiots at SANZAR), but from what i have seen he is very talented. His tackle on Tuialigi was incredible - what a try saver.. Hope he has a fantastic world cup

I think hernandez is the best fullback in the world.
He want to play fly half but for me it is not this place because he need many space and in the semi final of top14 betsen close him. At the end all journalist say hernandez don't do a great match..
It is my opinion

Now that he has played two matches, i can say that he is one of the best players of the tournament, and all the people that said they hadnt seen him enough will agree that he is a great player, top class, even though you havent seen him as a fullback.

Those up and unders against France were pure class. Contepomi couldn't have done that - he would have run the ball, the stupid fool.

12-09-07, 12:33 AM
Contepomi also played a great match (obviusly on the second half, nobody did in the first one), and he had a couple of good runs and breakthroughs. Juan Hernandez is a great player, but some of you are overestimating him, you cant say hes the best player on the wolrd because he simply isnt, but you can say he is one of the best player in the argentinian rugby history and one of the most talented players of the tournament.

I notice that the other SH fans have kept largely quiet over this.

Is this out of respect for a new up and coming top ten nation or is this because they've seen so little of Hernandez that they don't know whether to use the usual tactic of dismiss the player and any of his fans out of hand as insane or whether to call him really lucky.

Maybe if Argentina have a good game against New Zealand we'll see.

I don't know, there was a general consensus that Hernandez was the best fullback in the world, in other threads. I think he is a highly skilled player, and is a much more dynamic fullback than MacDonald or Latham. Personally, I'd rather see him at fullback than at first-five. To me he's more effective when he has more time. Take for instance during the Ireland game today, when he dropped back he was not only in perfect position, not only did he make great takes, but he was also fantastic in the counter attack. His chip and chase and offload while he was falling to ground was one of the most fantastic individual plays of the tournament.

I think he is staying at SF. The problem here is that he wont play as a flyhalf as he likes, and in Leicester he would. Also he would be trained by Loffreda, so i think he would have preferred to play in Leicester but SF didnt want to sell him.

Juan Martin Hernandez is a very talented player, he's doing pretty well in this world cup playing at fly half (he has played so much more at fullback) and I think he can only improve in the coming matches.

Hernandez gave his best performance of the World Cup today. He attacked the line superbly and his array of tactical kicking was excellent. Injuries seemed to take their toll against Scotland and South Africa. Perhaps he wasn't fully fit when he played them but against Ireland and France, he fully justified Loffreda's faith in giving him the 10 shirt. Hopefully the Pumas can unearth a new scrumhalf to match his talents once Gus Pichot calls it a day.

Probably but he doesnt in my opinion control and inspire the team as much as Nicky Little does for Fiji. He isnt perhaps the most physical of players but he is involved with everything they do well, without him they lose direction and can lose to the poorest of sides. I accept you will be a bit biased due to the flag in the left corner ;)

and he said that he wanna play like 10 , but his coach tell him that he couldnt play there.... i wrote "couldnt" because maybe his coach watched the world cup and the fantastic matches that he have like 10.

Maybe now the coach have another opinion

Martin1813

There is a big concurrence in Stade Français for flyhalf, as for all of the other positions in this club.

David Skrela is one of the top scorers of the last Top14 seasons and one of the most regular goal kicker. He is one the master key of the success of SF by his vision of the game and he is a strong defenser as well.

The raising star Lionel Beauxis who led France's -21 to the victory in world championship, has a real strong kick. He is able to score at 60 m. He doesn't care of the pressure.

The fact is Hernandez is a real great player, such a great one he can play everywhere in the backline. Fabien Galthié did not wait the RWC to think about making Hernandez at 10. JMH spent the last half of the season as the starting fly half of Stade Français, while Skrela was in 12 and Beauxis on the bench.

SF has a lot of very skillful players so Galthié has the possibility to turn them over without putting is side in a difficult.

So I think, in SF side, Hernandez's natural place is fullback, because of the lesser concurrence here, even if Jeanjean is recovering his top level. But it doesn't forbid him to play elsewhere

Caledfwlch
23-11-07, 01:11 PM
I guess that's one of the downsides to having three top players vying for that same position. 1 will get to star while the other two will have to contend for other roles. But on te other hand you have good backup and you can be sure the healthy competition will make the players be at each others throats to play well, in a good way.

I just watched some of his 2007/2008 games, and all I can say is that he is truly unique. The way he kicks is simply unbelievable. His ability to get an extra 10 to 25 yards on his kicks adds so much value to SF. Watching him play against Dax, I wonder if SF would have kept their record intact had it not been solely for Hernandez and his kicking. The way he kicks the ball and gets it going sideways so as to bounce once and then go in touch is simply class.

Yes he's a great player but unlucky...
Saturday in Cordoba he broke his wrist because one of his teammates treaded upon him.
Even though Italy won that test (pretty sure we won because he was substituted), has been such a pity not to see him playing as he is used to play with his talent & genius :( :(

Hope he will recover as soon as possible.
I want to see him here in Turin next November for the test against Italy again.
