Ok an exciting match this one!
Two teams who've been known for being flamboyant at times and also for falling at hurdles they perhaps should've overcome. Many new faces in both teams and certainly a re-building year for each as well.
It wouldn't be going to far to say that these are confidence teams and that whomever draws first blood in this opening round clash will take a huge boost of that aforementioned confidence and will be a danger team to watch for the following few rounds.
What do you think?

Got to be 2 of the most up and down teams in the comps history, just as equally capable of giving you a hiding then losing to the bottom team the next week. Hurricanes for me.

I think the new laws will really suit the Hurricanes and the hype machine known as the Waratahs will get demolished.

You never know what Hurricanes team will turn up hopefully the one that want's to win but if they don't I think the Waratahs have the potential to beat them by 12-.
But for my vote it'll be the Hurricanes by 13+ only if everything goes right for them too many mistakes and it could go the other way.

Go the Cane's they are my favourites after the Highlanders who I have to support as I live here.

I think the Waratahs will step up for this one. They hammered the Hurricanes in Wellington last year, but I think the Waratahs will win a close one. Waratahs by 6.
I'd need to see the starting line-ups for this match..
Hurricanes are a good team, but they really need a good 1st five.. It's their weakest link, and it cost them quite a few games last year
I vote for canes! It could could go either way though.

I thought the 'Canes had a pretty good scrum last year.
I just remember them monstering the Brumbies in their last game... but then the Brumbies went on to smash the Bulls scrum (despite losing)...
So who really knows?!
Anyways, as I said before - the new laws should hopefully benefit the 'Canes in this match as they've got a pretty good back 5 in the forward pack and the Waratahs have a pretty slow pack who might just get a little bit tired after 50 minutes...

A pretty weak centre pairing and a forward pack made up of some of the worst representative players in the past decade.
Go the Canes!
I really do hope the Tahs get crunched, so that McKenzie can go back to going on about how stats show they are the best team in the Super 14 :D
Oh, and I hope Tahu gets shown up for a pretender and not the saviour of Australian rugby as SMH touts him to be....

But isn't this supposed to be the greatest team of all time?
Just like they tell us every pre-season... :D
Apparently Beale is going to school everyone despite not shining in a Super 14 match yet...

No no, to be fair, he did some kick over the defence and scored a try in one game at the start of last year, the amount of times they talked about it through the year I am pretty sure that makes him the Messiah. :P
Sadly Beales head is already bigger than the stadium.
The over confidence might help. I hope so. I also hope someone taught him how to tackle in the off season
Fed up with our "superstars" threatening to go back to league every time their contract is up for renewal. If they want to be leaguies give them a helping hand out the door I say.

I struggle to believe that both Baxter and Dunning have been retained for this match - at least one of them should have been laid off. Benn Robinson is a great prop and deserves his place above either. I'd also like to see Polota-Nau get more game time. With all respect to Freier I think this guy may be the future Wallaby hooker - he certainly impressed me a couple of years ago on the Europe tour.
After seeing the two teams, my head tells me the Canes should take this.
Their team looks really good, even with Tialata recovering from injury.
I still have concerns over Gopperth though. He has the talent, just lacks the form.
Hopefully Ripia gets a chance to run the show, see what he's got at the Canes.
canes lineup is very impressive. I really don't see how the tahs can contain them for the full 80 mins. might be a close first half but canes should destroy the tahs in the second. canes by 13+ for me

Go the mighty Hurricanes!! woo almost time =)
I hope Tahu gets owned!!! Hosea *clap clap clap*
It'll be highly odd without Tana =(
What a bullshit game to watch so far. The Canes are playing like arse, the only exciting moment was when Jane charged down a kick with his face from point blank range

I was about to say retrospect is bliss.
Though logic would dictate that, if one doesn't want to receive a bit of guff about sledging a team, they should probably use more ambiguous language; or at least lay off presenting a match's result as a unequivocal certainty.
I'm sure he'll be able to cope with a smiley emoticon and two words though.

That had to hurt! Ouch! :D
From a neutral point of view that was reasonable viewing.
The Waratahs look a lot better than I was led to believe but I'm not sure a gameplan of 'run around like headless chickens' did the Hurricanes any favours. I can't recall seeing that many turnovers in a game for quite a long time. The Hurricanes were relentless workers but lacked any sort of structure at all and rarely strung more than a few phases together and even though the Waratahs were also guilty of turning over too much ball they did utilise their possession a whole lot better the Hurricanes.
Tahs won? Now that's dissappointing :(

Far out what a disappointment from the 'Canes! i really expected them to do well this year, hopefully they can pick up their act in the weeks ahead.
Timana Tahu, not too shabby

Cory Janes charge down for anyone who missed it.
'Canes created a lot of opportunities but turnovers and handling errors at crucial times halted their progress towards the try line. They just needed to be a bit more patient like the Blues and Crusaders played in the 2nd half of their games.
It was evident that the 'Tahs were not putting in numbers in the ruck when they were on defense. Thus creating a wall for 'Canes to run into. Great defense 'Tahs
Good to see Jason Eaton back and running. Lachie Turner looks like a potential Superstar. Beale looked more comfortable and controlled the game more than last year. I was hoping to see Nonu and Smith in the midfield. The midfield looked weak with Ellison and Smith combo.

The Hurricanes were woeful. They threw far too many 50-50 passes and kicked away to much possession and made far to many turnovers.

Gayyyyyyyyyy. The Hurricanes couldnt even hold onto the ball!!! if they could have they most likely would have won

First Off let me just say that the new rules look rubbish, if you are not fast enough to set a tap kick up and take off your left with no attacking option, since the defense has already been set up.
The Canes played absolutely pathetically Jerry Collins being the worse, they just continued to throw it end to end too quickly and became isolated, they had a good patch there where there forwards rumbled it up but went straight back to throwing it too wide to quickly and the ball security was shocking they will need more structure if the want to make the play-offs.
Anyway full credit to the Waratah they took advantage and fully deserved there win.

Definitely, Collins was woeful IMO. Very disappointing considering his very high standards.

Then set up a scrum as an attacking base....
The Canes were running around like a bunch of headless chickens in this game. They would just juggle the ball around in the backline and end up isolating themselves. Sort your shit out hurricanes! Oh and well done to the Waratahs.

looking at the half time stats, the tahs spent about 65%of the time in their own half, canes making 5 line breaks. they should have had it apart from their turnovers and handling errors.

I didn't get to see the game but I was shocked to hear the results.
Anyways, it's only round one of the competition - the 'Tahs are still hardly the saviours of Australian rugby, and there are certain players in that squad who should never represent Australia again.
Congratulations to them nonetheless.
After watching this, I am convinced Nonu MUST ALWAYS play in the midfield. The Ellison/Smith combination is as limp as a pensioners penis.
Tahs won aye? Always good to start the season with a win :) . Anyone know any sites where I can download *REMOVED* of the S14 matches by any chance? I'm in Japan and it's pretty hard to get access to the games.

Seconded, the press surrounding the Waratahs, (especially when released by the SMH staff and the arch-tard Greg Growden) is disgusting.

I agree. I have said this many times before but Cory Jane shouldn't be playing fullback. Even though I like him his attacking ability is wasted out there and his kicking game is average at best. He should be playing wing and Paku should be fullback imo

Yep. Backline should be: 9. Weepu, 10. Gopperth, 11. Gear, 12. Nonu, 13. Smith, 14. Ellison/Jane, 15. Paku
Weepu should also be permanent goal kicker, Gopperth is rather average.

He was a very poor goal kicker for one. And yeah.... I always thought the 'Canes were lagging with him at 10 compared to all the other first5's the NZ franchises had.
But yes, I don't know what the story is with Gopperth, he has real talent but always screws up. I reckon he'll be off to Europe soon, he's not going anywhere fast at the moment in NZ lol
