Hi, I'm looking for some information or history on a part of the Scottish game that is fairly new to me and in particular the old district sides an championship...

It's a bit of a random query this, but I've been taking a bit of trip down memory lane remembering the start of the Magners/Rabo (in addition to reading more on random invitational sides), and in particular The Borders/Border Reivers team from Scotland took my interest.

Whilst they are long defunct as a professional entity I understand that there is a long history and recent revivals of its equivalent invitational team "South of Scotland" (in 2009 vs Northumberland and 2011 vs the Barbarians).

Whilst digging around and reading up on "The South" I came across a team and aspect of the Scottish game I'd never encountered before and that's the Inter-District Championship and the district team the Caledonia Reds (or North-Midlands/North & Midlands/Caledonia name variants).

Basically I'm interested in hearing as much information as anyone has or can remember regarding the Caledonia Reds team that actually played in the Heineken Cup for 2x seasons in addition to its modern equivalent which I understand (I may be wrong) still exists as an age grade district team that still plays games against the other 3 districts (Borders/Glasgow/Edinburgh).

Does anyone have any images of the team playing from back in the mid-90's? What about nowadays, how competitive are their age grade sides and what kit do they play in (I'm guessing red) and are there any images of it?

What was that old Inter-District Championship like, when did it end at a senior level and from an amateur perspective and growing the Scottish game, could it have a future?

Also, what affiliation do the Glasgow and Edinburgh age grade district sides have with the full professional teams of the same name? Is it a case of the Glasgow side is a Glasgow Warriors U-18 team for example or is it more regionalised than that and is not officially connected to the pro team (but would still feed its players into it)?

In terms of the Borders age grade district side, is it effectively the same as the South of Scotland team but under age grade restrictions? (do they use the same kit/colours, etc?)

As I say, its a bit of a random question/query but something that I've become interested in but can't satisfy that interest from googling the web, so anyone with local/regional or contextual knowledge of the teams/kits/competition and their histories that could share it with me would be greatly appreciated!

I remember talk a good few years back that after the Borders were disbanded that a team could be based out of Aberdeen in the future and that the Scottish Union saw a future for 3 pro teams from Scotland, but whilst that idea seemed to die away, I had no idea until recently that historically (but not that long ago) there was a competitive team based on the same idea, and its just got me interested to see what remains of these old teams in terms of regional fanbase and connections to their modern age grade equivalents.

Cheers if anyone has any info...
Thanks,

Has anyone got any past experiences of the Supporter's Village which they can share as I'd like to know whether it's worth it (£75 each) for what you get.
I appreciate it's quite a subjective thing but would appreciate feedback all the same.

A couple times now I've seen an opposing player 'intercept' a pass and get penalized for it as interference (not sure if that's the proper term). I'm trying to figure out what makes it illegal compared to charge downs and other intercepted passes that are allowed.

I can't give a specific instance, but was wondering if it could be because a player is offside, or if it's because (as it sometimes seems) that he's not attempting to play the ball, but tip or slap it just to throw off the trajectory.
The Australian-born prop made the tough call to leave the current Super Rugby champions, following some outstanding performances for the Chiefs this season and Waikato during the ITM Cup in 2012.
Rebels General Manager of Rugby, Sam Cordingley, was thrilled to have signed the talented loosehead prop, attributing his winning attitude as being one of his greatest strengths.
"We are very pleased to have Toby Smith on board," said Cordingley.
"To have a championship player like Toby committing to the Rebels is great sign of where this young organisation is heading.
"We are already seeing the fruits of some of our young players developing from this Rebels rugby program. At 24, Toby brings with him not only a great deal of experience at young age, but also some impressive form from this Super Rugby season and last season's ITM Cup."
Smith spoke of his fond memories of his time at the Waikato franchise, but also the new opportunities that lay ahead in Australia's sporting capital.
"I have been very fortunate to have been involved in such a fantastic Rugby program," said Smith.
"During the last four years playing for the Chiefs and Waikato I have been lucky enough to be coached by some fantastic coaches and play alongside some world class players who have all helped with my development and it was a very tough decision to make the move to Australia.
"I am looking forward to moving to Melbourne, it's a great city and from what I can the see the Rebels are building a very competitive rugby team, with a good mix of youth and experience. To be part of that will be fantastic.
"I am also looking forward to pressing my claims toward playing test Rugby in the future and taking advantage of my Australian eligibility."
Although Australian born, Smith was a member of the Zealand U20 side, winning the 2008 U20 Junior World Championship.

This is a huge signing for the Chiefs, and I think Smith will be in the Wallabies by the the next World Cup.

I'm incredibly brassed off about this - this is a direct result of Rennie messing around with Smith, not giving him regular starts.

First of all you dont have to agree or not....

But i feel The Springboks are overrated, i feel we never really dominate games, we just get by scraping most games.

We hardly ever really win by big scores(over 15points) especially over NZ and AUS. The last time we ever really dominated was in 2009, ever since then we've never really done much. We dont have any cup to prove it too to make my point. I feel we are a bit off in terms of skills to NZ and AUS(sorry im only comparing us to them, but to be the best you have to beat the best.) To be honest too i doubt we'll ever be better than NZ, AUS maybe. We are too inconsistent, probably ONE of the most inconsistent teams on the International stage

This might sound like im trolling, but im not before you all jump on my case! Just saying whats on my mind.

He's got one more shot at another Grand Slam as well as the ABs though, which would surely be a perfect end to his career.

The Western Force have named their team to play the Sharks at nib Stadium on Friday with Alby Mathewson returning to the starting line up.
The Force have retained the same 22-man squad that pushed the Chiefs in their 22-21 loss to the reigning Super Rugby champions, with Mathewson's promotion to the starting XV the only change in the Western Australian line-up.
Prior to last week's encounter, the Kiwi scrumhalf had started in each of the Force's previous 11 matches.
Friday's match represents the first of five consecutive home matches for the Force, including Super Rugby fixtures against the Sharks, Highlanders, Waratahs and Brumbies, and their tour match against the British & Irish Lions.
Emirates Western Force Head Coach Michael Foley says these matches are an opportunity to demonstrate the progress the squad has made this season and the direction of the side moving forward.
"After undertaking an extensive travel schedule this season, the challenge is to strive for greater consistency in our last five performances at home." he said.
"I'm extremely pleased in the way the boys have continued to challenge themselves through what's been difficult circumstances over recent weeks.
"The performances against the Reds and again against the Chiefs indicates the extra effort they've put into preparing themselves to play for each other.
"While we were disappointed with the result against the Chiefs, I was proud of the character the boys demonstrated in outscoring an excellent attacking side like the Chiefs two tries to one.
"While we continue to develop our game, our immediate challenge is to back up our previous two performances with the same outstanding effort against a dangerous Sharks side tomorrow night."

Original source - http://www.superxv.com/news/super15_...s.asp?id=39046

"The Waratahs have named Paddy Ryan to make his fourth start of the season in this weekend's Australian derby clash against the Brumbies.
Ryan's inclusion at tighthead prop in place of Sekope Kepu is one of two changes to the side that last week overpowered the Stormers 21-15, with Drew Mitchell also elevated from the bench in place of Peter Betham.
The game is NSW's first of the season at ANZ Stadium and Head Coach Michael Cheika's first visit to the venue.
"There's always something special about these Australian derby games because there's so much rivalry built up over all the years of playing each other. With the Brumbies also leading the competition, this is a very important game for us," said Cheika.
"Last time we played them in Canberra back in Round 4, our effort was simply not good enough to compete with a very well drilled Brumbies outfit."
"Throughout this season, we've been working hard at developing our identity and becoming an honest hardworking team and I think now we're starting to play the kind of attacking running rugby that we want to be known for. "
"How we play under the pressure of this match up will show how committed we are to play the brand of rugby that we want associated with NSW rugby.
"For me, building a winning mentality is about getting up for every game, about having that obsessive mentality every day in training as well as when you step out onto the pitch but there will be a little extra edge in the game, something I personally enjoy in rugby.
"The Brumbies have been showing the way all season. They're well ahead of us on the table, they're very disciplined in the way they play the game and they've got good leadership."
"I'm sure they'll think they will have an edge on us so it's up to us to respond in kind. We'll require the level of physicality that we showed against the Stormers last week plus 10 per cent."
