Big congratulations to the Ontario Blues. They defeated the IRB's 21st ranked team on its home field. It is an impressive result for a Canadian provincial team. Too bad B. C. is not in the CRC. I think the Blues could take the Bears. If the teams had all of their players at their call, I think the two lineups would be about equal in ability.

I was going to predict the Bears to take this years competition until this latest development, I'm thinking the Blues will be favourites now.

The Rock defeated the Canadian Maple Leafs 32-29 yesterday in what was a fun game to watch(with some technical isssues unfortunately), the archive broadcast is still available at sportscanada.tv for those interested.

Gareth Rees commentates, and drops an interesting tidbit about Chauncey O'Toole, suggesting he will be heavily involved in the 7's program next year now that Canada is a full time side, we'll have to keep posted on that as I thought Chauncey might go the RFU Championship or D2 routes.

Here is the match report, and some lineup information courtesy of Rugby Canada.

"It was a hot day as the Atlantic Rock and the Canadian Maple Leafs took the field at Bear Mountain stadium Sunday afternoon. The Atlantic Rock were playing the first of a four game trip to Vancouver Island. Following today’s match The Rock face the National U20 team tomorrow night at 7pm at Bear Mountain Stadium. This trip is in preparation of the start of the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) season.

The Rock started the game strong and opened the scoring at 1:26 into the first after Toni Wodzicki pounced on a loose ball to score the first try of the game. Patrick Parfrey kicked a successful conversion from the far sideline putting The Rock up by seven.

The Maple Leafs were awarded a penalty after the Rock’s front row went down in the scrum. Patrick Kay got The Maple Leafs on the board with a successful penalty kick. The penalties continued as The Rock was awarded a penalty after the Maple Leafs. The Rock decided to kick from just within the half way line. Ciaran Hearn made the kick and The Rock took a 10-3 lead.

The Maple Leafs scored their first try at 17:10 in the first, after a great pass from Hubert Buydens who got the ball out wide to Sean Fergurson who managed to score in the corner. The conversion was kicked off the post causing the Maple Leafs to trail the rock 10-8.

The Rock continued pressing as Ciaran Hearn found Chauncey O’Toole out wide. O’Toole taking advantage of the mismatch in speed was able to run the ball into the Maple Leafs end. Patrick McNicholas made the conversion from out wide and The Rock increased their lead 17-8.

Patrick Kay kicked a high ball from deep in the Maple Leafs end and Sean Duke was able to make the catch before heading on a long run from 50m out putting the ball down between the posts in the Rock's end.

The score at half time was 17 – 15 in favor of The Rock. The heat on the field was taking its toll on players and hydration was a critical element.

The second half started with both teams battling hard as The Rock continued to demonstrate strong defensive organization. However, at 9:44 into the second Sean Ferguson was able to break through scoring the first try of the half. Patrick Kay was able to add the extra two points giving the Maple Leafs their first lead of the game at 22-17.

At 11:58, The Rock answered after a pass from Jason Picco went wide to Kyle Baillie who dove the ball into the corner scoring for The Rock while injuring himself on the play and tying the Game 22 – 22.

The Rock managed to take back the lead after Ciaran Hearn made a run to the corner scoring at 18:41. Patrick McNicholas made a beautiful kick from the sideline. The Rock led 29-22. At 23:21 Grayden Bowd fed Michael Feualifau who made a great individual effort scoring a try. Kay made the conversion tying the game 29-29.

With less than three minutes left in the game the Maple Leafs were called for being off their feet, Patrick McNicholas who had been consistent all day managed to pick up the extra three points, putting The Rock up 32-29. The last few minutes of play found the Maple Leafs pressing hard in the Rock's end, however the strong defense by The Rock held off the charging Maple Leafs. The final score was 32-29 in favor of the visiting team, The Rock from Newfoundland.

Maple Leafs head coach Kieran Crowley was pleased with today's match, even though his squad didn’t come out on top.

“The physicality that The Rock brought to the game was great for our boys” said Crowley “This was a good chance for some of our boys to be exposed to a style of rugby that is higher than what they are used to playing and this is what they will be facing if selected for the U20 squad”

The Rock will be playing again Monday night at 7pm as they take on the National U20 team at Bear Mountain Stadium."

BC will still have a team. However, the team will be run by RC without support from the BCRU. What will be interesting is going to be who will be making themselves available to play for the BC team. I would think that anyone with any aspiration to play for the National team would but the fringe players may remain loyal to their clubs. BC might still have their best players but not the players who consider themselves outside of the NSMT frame This would keep BC from having the depth that they need to make a serious run at winning.

Think Crusaders with their top 9-10 players but not the rest of the team then having to select the rest of your team from Tasman Makos.

Good post rusty, I was under the assumption that the BC team fielded would be a very weak side but your clarification leads me to think that they might be able to compete in most games if those core 9-10 players play their buns off, and the injuries are kept to a minimum.

The Blues should probably be the favourites at least for now, and The Rock can't be counted out to score some upsets especially at home. Haven't heard too much about the Wolf Pack since Ryan Smith made a few statements about his plan for the team, hopefully they'll start some warm up matches soon.

Edit: Are you watching the U-20's and Rock Rusty? I'm finding the similar uniforms hard to sort out at the moment LOL.

The Rock came out on top of the U-20's last night by a score of 41-21. The Rock picked up a huge lead based on some solid forwards work and some ineffective tackling by the U-20's and lead 34-7 at one point. Full credit to the younger players as they didn't give up and were rewarded with two well worked tries that closed the game up a bit until the Rock put one more thorough to put it to bed.

For those that missed it in the transfer thread, Tyler Hotson is leaving Plymouth Albion but is unable to disclose his destination at the moment until things are finalized, not sure if it's another overseas club or whether he is returning home to be at the COE, or to play in the CRC and CDI.

Just a little update to the CRC guys... this hasn't been mentioned but Eastern Ontario and Quebec are appearing to be teaming up to try and form a team for entry into the CRC. This region has been affected as its to far from Ottawa to Toronto for players from there to play for the Blues and Quebec is currently linked with the Rock which is a 3 hour flight away. They already have the voyageurs playing in the under-20 crc and it looks like they are making a push to enter the senior ranks. I believe this would be a good mvoe as rugby is growing very fast in Quebec and is already quite popular in both Montreal and Ottawa. Thoughts?

Fantastic news! This is what the CRC needs to help build its credibility as a legitimate national championship. If they could then get two teams from BC (ie Island and Mainland) that would bring it to 6 teams and could provide the impetus to really help grow the game domestically.

I like the idea, Quebec is very awkwardly tied in with The Rock and with Ontario's massive population and player base splitting it up isn't the end of the world. Do you know exactly what the boundaries in Ontario would be Rugger? Are we talking everything north of Kingston and west of Renfrew? Or just the Ottawa to sort of Cornwall area?

Love your idea as well Rusty, that would be a great rivalry between the Island and Mainland of BC, the Island is the spiritual home of Canadian rugby. Six teams would be a credible yet managable number, and hopefully we can get some sort of a championship final again thats televised nationally. If the money could be there I would go for both these idea in a heartbeat.

Not sure where to post this but Tyler Hotson is indeed scouting out other oppourtunities overseas after leaving Plymouth Albion, Jeff Hull is confirming this in the latest Pro Report.

I also wanted to post this fantastic interview that Rugby Canada had on it's website about the Ontario Blues tour to South America, just in case anyone missed it.

"Blues Manager Mark Winokur was instrumental in setting up the tour. A long-time coach and player in Ontario, Mark has been part of many representative teams including coaching Canada A against the New Zealand Maori and the Canadian team at the Maccabiah Games.
Rugby Canada communications was able to catch up with Mark this week to find out a bit more about the tour.

How did this tour come about?

    MW:
The tour started when I was with the Canada side at the Americas Rugby Championship in 2010 in Cordoba, Argentina. I met Hernan Rouco Oliva, the IRB Regional General Manager for the South American rugby federation (CONSUR) and we talked about a sub international competition.

The Argentine provincial team Salta toured Canada in 2011, when they first played the Blues. At the time they invited the eventual winners of the Canadian Rugby Championship to come to them in 2012.

Once the wheels were in motion, Chile and Uruguay heard about the tour from Salta and offered to help us get to them also.

How did the Blues manage to cover the costs for such an ambitious tour?

    MW:
CONSUR paid for all the ground and internal air travel, hotels and food. Rugby Canada and Rugby Ontatio contributed as well.
The players contributed a small amount and we did a major fundraiser in conjunction with Toronto’s Balmy Beach Club. We also had help from major sponsors National Bank and RIPA Rugby.

Were you able to select all the players you wanted?

    MW:
Mostly. We lost Taylor Paris, John Moonlight, Kieran Moloney and Darryl Snider to injury before the tour. Dan Pletch was busy with work and a had a newborn son, so he could not make it either.
The selections were based on last year’s team with input from the National Senior Men’s Team coaches on replacements and additions.

What were the logistics like getting around in Spanish-speaking countries?

Moving 33 people around South America for 12 days was obviously a challenge! I speak a bit of Spanish and I was able to link in French with our Uruguayan liaison officer. The Chilean liaison was a transplanted Kiwi, so no problems there.

What was the reception like in Chile?

    MW:
The Santiago leg of the tour was very good, well organized and friendly. Rugby there is obviously not as popular as soccer, but the oval ball game has a higher profile in Chile than in Canada
Santiago is a beautiful city on the edge of the Andes. We stayed right downtown in a nice hotel.
The Chilean rugby union has a high performance centre up in the mountains similar to the one we have in Langford, B.C., but not as good. The game against Chile was played there.

From there you went to the far north of Argentina to Salta. What was that like?

    MW:
Salta was fairly warm and humid but not oppressively. The temperature at game time was around 22 degrees. We trained and played at the Jockey Club which was beautiful. The field was like a golf green surface.
Being at home, the Salta team was obviously stronger than when they travelled to Canada, but we were able to exploit their overall lack of pace.

From there you went to face Los Teros. What did you think of Montevideo?

    MW:
Uruguay was our favorite stop. The people there were very friendly and the hotel was spectacular out in the countryside. Montevideo is a beautiful city and the surroundings are more rural and laid back than I would have thought. I t was kind of like California or South Carolina
The Uruguayan rugby union was very organized and the rugby facilities there are generally good, certainly better than ours.
However, they did make us play at the Montevideo Cricket Club, which is a small pitch. The hope was that would give their forwards an advantage. That backfired as our forwards outplayed theirs including taking three tighthead steals in the scrums.

The Blues visited the Old Christians rugby club, which was the team whose plane crashed in the Andes in 1972. Their story was immortalized in the 1993 movie Alive. What was that like?

    MW:
That was one of the most moving events I have ever been part of.
We spent a good two hours with survivor Gustavo Zerbino in the Old Christians’ beautiful cabin-style clubhouse, food and drinks provided. The room was absolutely silent when Zerbino finished speaking.

What were some of the non-rugby diversions on tour?

    MW:
There weren`t many. We did spend a day roaming Salta. A bunch of the guys went white water rafting. We spent another in Buenos Aires, which is like a combination of Paris and New York
Everyone had a great go at our nightly "CAMPEON dos Animales Pelgrosos" (Championship of the Dangerous Animals).

How does this tour compare to any other rep team tour you’ve been part of?

    MW:
It seriously was the best ever.
The level of the rugby was much higher than anything we see here. We beat the 21st ranked country in the world on their home pitch. Our rugby is very well respected in Latin America, more so now!"

Ontario Just went 2-1 on their South American Tour running Chile to the wire and beating Salta Province and Uruguay impressively. The BC is still the strongest because of all the imports; however, a lot of those imports are produced outside of BC.

The fact that BC hasn't even featured in the final the past 2 years of the CRC speaks volumes to their true strength as a province.
I like you, we normally get along but this post is just a tad ridiculous.

First off, I agree that the BCRU are the biggest ******* ***** to ever exist and if it isn't an Island team or Cap/Lomas/Bayside, then you don't exist to them. They must get on board soon or get left behind.

Secondly, I think the CRC team with no control from BCRU would actually be a better team without their politics.

Thirdly, I'm thrilled about the Blues results. Especially over Chile.

Fourthly, BC has the best league because of the imports (due to the weather and the existing club structure) however:
Ryan Hamilton – BC CRC Team (West Vancouver, BC)
Tyler Hotson – Plymouth Albion (Vancouver, BC)
Sean White – BC CRC Team (Victoria, BC)
Ed Fairhurst – BC CRC Team (Vancouver, BC) (grew up saskatchewan but been in BC a loooong time.)
Connor Braid – BC CRC Team (Victoria, BC)
Matt Evans – Cornish Pirates (Duncan, BC)
Conor Trainor – BC CRC Team (Vancouver, BC)
Sean Duke – BC CRC Team (Vancouver, BC)
    Jamie Cudmore Squamish, BC
    Brian Erichsen Vancouver, British Columbia
    Nathan Hirayama Vancouver, British Columbia
Adam Kleeberger White Rock, British Columbia
    Jason Marshall Vancouver, British Columbia
    Pat Riordan Burnaby, British Columbia
    Conor Trainor Vancouver, British Columbia
    Nick Blevins Vancouver, British Columbia
    Luke Cudmore Squamish, BC
    Mitchell Gudgeon Victoria, British Columbia
    Justin Mensah-Coker Vancouver, British Columbia

I grew up playing with some of the names on this list so I can assure you they are from BC.

I think we can see BC true strength as a province. It is a valuable contributor to the National team, just as valuable as Ontario.

What your saying is similar to something I heard during the Olympics about how BC had no contributions to the Hockey National Team? Yet what province are Shea Weber, Scott Niedermayer, Duncan "Flying elbow" Keith (disowned) and Brent Seabrook from? No flashy forwards this time but we did our part with the best defensive core.

Interesting article at rugbycanada.ca on the new BC CRC team, that is now recruting players. As some of you may know the BCRU has not endorsed/participated in this upcoming CRC campaign. Rugby Canada will take the ball and form a team that will represent the region, they are mostly looking at Canadian internationals and players from the younger sides. Pat Riordan former Canadian captain is very active in the process.

The preseason schedule looks a little light with games against Durham University and a head to head trail match. With the other three teams getting in much longer preseasons and having none of the internal issues it could be a difficult campaign for the BC team although a lot depends on the players they can get to try out.

The BC team has now been renamed the Pacific Tyee, due to it being run by Rugby Canada and not by the BCRU, they are scrambling to put together a roster, and have had a couple of tryout games against Durham University. Unfortunately it looks like the Pacific Tyee will be under prepared compared to the other CRC squads who have much more extensive pre season schedules.

I think it's Tyee and I have absolutely no clue.

Edit: I think it's a type of Salmon. Yes it is, and apparently one over thirty pounds.

Ah right, Tyee. Well of course I know what that is. Anyone who is even remotely up to speed on North American neolithic tribal structure would know that.

Yeah it's bizarre to say the least, especially when there is a crap load of things a British Columbian team could call themselves.

The BC "Edwardians" and there mascot, logo and entire franchise could be based around the demigod that is Ed Fairhurst.

Edit: Took me a while to find out what the CFL's Montreal "Alouettes" were I thought it was the song but it's just the French word for a lark.

The venues have been announced and added to the schedule on first page, all Pacific home games are at Bear Mountain Stadium, all Wolf Pack games at the Calgary Rugby Park and Rock Home games will be at Swilers Rugby Complex. Ontario will have two games at the Oakville Crusaders RFC, and one game at Burlington.

Which is great for me since Oakville and especially Burlington aren't very far down the road perhaps I'll make it to a game this year although the CRC is held at my busiest time of the year.

Well the CRC season is almost upon us, with action starting up next Saturday the 18th of August, I'm pretty busy this upcoming week so I'm not sure if I will have time to post about those games and thus I'm also doing a bit of an early preview of the season ahead. Here are my team capsules.

Ontario Blues - The 2011 champions, are still a very strong side and proved that on their tour of South America where they defeated Salta Province and Uruguay, while only narrowly losing to Chile. The Blues also have an advantageous schedule, with an extra home game. Several key players have left with Taylor Paris and Brett Beukeboom heading overseas, but this has been somewhat negated with players such as Ray Barkwill and Jamie Mackenzie returning to the side. While I may come across as a bit of a homer, I think the Blues should still be the favourites to win the CRC this season. They have great depth, lots of current and former national side players and a large talent pool to draw from should injuries arise.

Players to watch: HK: Ray Barkwill SH: Jamie Mackenzie FH: Steve Piatek

Pacific Tyee - Those that have followed developments in Canada will by now be aware that the BC side has not been endorsed by the local governing union due to what they see as a conflict with their own domestic season. This has left the side to be run by Rugby Canada themselves, and the side has been scrambling the last couple of months to recruit players and set up pre season matches. The light pre-season and issues with player recruitment will leave the side at a disadvantage especially in the earlier matches. Still the side will have some solid talent coming from the heartland of Canadian rugby, and also have access to world class facilties for training. This is the most difficult side to predict, if they gel quickly they could turn themselves into a contender. Things could also end up poorly if BC travels poorly(they have an extra road game), or the lack of pre season competition shows in performance.

Players to watch: WG Sean Duke, SH: Sean White, FH: Connor Braid

Atlantic Rock - While the Rock should be a little worried about the long term due to the poor performances of their youth sides(they were without the Quebec players), the senior men's team is still a capable side. Featuring a mix of older veterans and some hard hitting youngsters the Rock can't be counted out for a return to their 2010 championship form. The extra home game will be very important as St. John's is a great venue for the Rock, featuring what are often the largest CRC crowds, in an often inhospitable climate and with travelling sides(especially the Western sides) facing long trips sometimes without key players, the Rock can pull off big wins at home. Depth will be an issue for the Rock more so than some of the other sides, and injuries or absenses of key players could hurt their chances. I don't see the Rock winning the trophy this season, but I think they will be a factor especially if they can get the results they need at home.

Players to watch: FL: Chauncey O'Toole, FH: Dean Blanks, WG/FB: Ciaran Hearn

Prairie Wolf Pack - Possibly the dark horse team going into this season, the Wolf Pack have a solid young core of excting players coming up, now under the management of former player Ryan Smith(who is being helped by Jeremy Kyne) the Wolf Pack will be looking to build on previous seasons and perhaps finally lift the cup at season's end. The Wolf Pack also face the Pacific Tyee early in the season if they can pick up a couple of wins early against a team that might be lacking proper preparation they could very well compete for the championship. One thing I don't feel the Wolf Pack are as strong in is at SH and FH, as well as goal kicking, I expect a bruising style of play from some big bodies in the forwards, while some breaks could be made by the young backs. It will also be important to see whether front row stalwart Hubert Buydens can return from injury in time for the season.

Players to watch: P: Hubert Buydens(if available) FL: Nanyak Dala, WG: Jeff Hassler.

With all this said, with such a short competiton and some fairly evenly matched teams the old cliche of "anything can happen" speaks volumes. In a semi-pro league players are often unavailable due to work or school commitments, likewise better players may secure overseas contracts or be called up for 7's training. Added to injuries and the factor of how well the Tyee will do on such short notice this season is even more unpredictable than normal.

I'm extremely happy with one of my friends making this team. Hopefully for the players on these teams this is just first step. Regardless if my friend continues and gets to Canada I'll be out bit of cash. Going to his first cap no matter where in the world. Never been so excited for crc results

Thats great to hear Canucks it looks like a young side for the Tyee this year, hopefully he will do well. Still trying to figure out whether I played Ray Barkwill in High School rugby right now I'm like 85% I did not, I think I missed him by a year.

Unfortunately for the Tyee the early season issues I thought they would have indeed revealed themselves as they were utterly destroyed by the Wolf Pack 64-19(33-7 at half) in the opening game of the CRC season. Perhaps they can turn things around for next weekends rematch.

I just went to the game and bought one at the door last time I went, I might head to the one in Burlington this year, last time I went I think it was 10 or 15 bucks, not sure if that has changed. The various union's websites might have tickets available but I've never bothered since they are never sold out and I don't think they give much of a discount for buying early.
