    Aaaaaarrrrrrggg Uni!!!!

So, final week of my first year of postgraduate study, and I've left everything till the last minute as always (Not that I haven't been working my ass off, just obviously not hard enough!).

I've got my dissertation hand-in tomorrow, and I've only written half of it, with almost 4,000 words to write tonight. That then leaves me four days to complete my portfolio for my studio work. I'm already sleep deprived and close to meltdown as it is. This is pure hell at the moment.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Get off the forum you fool! I'll change my 'NH member of the year' nomination if you don't get to work.

Few weeks back I had numerous projects/presentations. I had three exams, three papers, and two presentations over one week, with another presentation the week after. It wasn't inherently difficult, just time consuming. I bloody hate citations. Printed over a hundred pages worth of sources.

What is your dissertation on, can I ask? If it is the Welsh tour to Australia, then you are in the right place.

Haha, I know. I'm still working, but sometimes need a 5 min break where I check back here for updates.

This dissertation will offer an assessment of the possible ways in which virtual reality will impact our everyday lives, and ultimately the changes it may have on the way architecture is designed, viewed, and used.
There's my quick aim. Proving to be difficult, should have set myself something a little more straight forward. Does mean I get to use the films: The Lawnmower Man, The Matrix and Inception as sources.

I suddenly feel better about now studying this year and only deciding to do my course next year. Luckily still it's only going to be MCPD. Shouldn't be too much work... I hope.

What's your post grad in Dull? My is in his first year of some transport management PHD and seems to be mildly enjoying it.

Anyway, I just finished up second year exams, they nearly killed me. I made this fancy sig for them, but never got round to using it:

    Nice, non?

Yep, understand bru. That is certainly much more creative than my papers.
Seen Minority Report? I think there was a part in it where they showed a VR arcade or something, where people could fulfill any fantasy. Depending upon the extent of virtual reality in our lives, it could indeed allow for things such as that. With regards to architecture, I have no clue. Wish I was able to help. Didn't like the Matrix series. First one wasn't bad but the last two just dragged on.

Uni and I was a doomed relationship even if I hadn't failed I probably would have left anyway. Don't think I'd have kept up with the work, was never the most academic person (ie. thick) Still, I enjoyed it and don't regret going. Hope you get it all done in time Dull.

I'm doing a Masters degree in architecture. It's fun when the workload isn't close to unbearable, which it's rarely not been this year.

Yeh, I had thought to include Minority report, which I took as an excuse to watch it again a few months back. That one scene you mention could fit in quite well to what I'm talking about in one chapter, so I may cram that in to add a couple of hundred words.

Damn you. Wish I was finished now. I seriously need a break. Unfortunately I need to hunt for a summer job so I can pay rent .

That's what happened for me the first time. Too much weed, too little work = failure.

With me it was more a case of Disagreeing with "lecturers" + the subsequent decision to boycott said moron's lectures = not knowing what the heck the exam meant and the following fail.

Yeah, idiot professors are a massive detriment to schooling. I, fortunately, have really liked mine thus far. Quite a few ex-service lads, who always have a story to keep the class interested.

That's the joys of the physical sciences, even if the lecturers are idiots, they're almost definitely right. Also, all the material is onlie somewhere.

I have heard that architecture has the highest workload of any subject (including medicine/vet medicine) - I don't envy you Dull!

Just so everyone knows. I'm eating my dinner, so I'm having a 15min break whilst doing so, so please don't shout at me for commenting in the Leinster v Ospreys thread.

... don't I shout at you for commenting anyway?

One of my cousins did architecture, or something along those lines. His job now boils down to cycling around London taking photos of buildings. The bastard.

Man, if I was done by 3am I'd be over the moon. I'm probably gonna be printing around the 10 o'clock mark tomorrow morning, rushing to the binders, before getting it in before the deadline of 12am, or is it 2pm....

I can't see me making the full 8,000 word count. Not the best, because that was easily achievable if I hadn't of put it off for so long. It does get difficult when studio projects take up so much of my time, but it was also the fact that I bloody hate writing essays!

Well this makes me feel bad as I finished my exams over a week ago now (not) I had a strange timetable so had about 6 exams first term then just 2 in the 2nd, plus I'm only 2nd year so most of the work has barely started yet. Still got over a year to worry about my dissertation too since I'm off to study abroad in Germany for a year though cant see that I've past one module I had on Viennese literature... I hate studying literature at the best of times,, but my god Vienna can go f*ck itself... which it kinda does considering the amount of bonking that popped up in these books.

My condolences go out to everyone still working. I don't do exams (not that many in archaeology) but I did recently finish a dissertation on Roman roads and another on drains and sewers.

I'm not sure if anyone else has done an architecture course, but basically roughly 4-5 times a year you've got to visually present your work (printed and pinned to a wall), and stand up in front of the rest of your studio group, and 2-3 tutors, and verbally present your project. Mine usually go relatively well, despite never actually getting any sleep the night before (and only a couple of hours the night before that), or having anything to eat (you begin shaking normally, and start to feel a little like being tipsy). The tutors then comment on your work and give you some critical feedback. Well there's one tutor that's a complete c**t who regularly makes people cry during their 'crit', especially girls.

My MA tutor reckoned dissertations on sewer systems were the best idea as you could guarantee a clear shot at the field. Was he actually right?

Depends what you mean by 'field'. If you mean actually getting out there and looking at them, then perhaps yes, but you'd have to travel an awful lot to see any which could be used. If you mean discussing it well then that's another possibility as there isn't much out there on this topic really, depending on your angle of attack.

One good thing about no exams if that around this time of year (when people have exams) I can go and dig up a 'possible' camp of Julius Caesar in 20 degrees weather (in kent). Lovely weather; score.

I have a feeling that cyRil did that same degree you did, Gavin.

Hopefully as we speak a (very blurry eyed and zombie-like) Dull is watching the printer spit out his dissertation!

The latter; there's nothing worse than going for a dissertation topic where everything's been said. I'm guessing its different for archaeology students (which you seem to be)

And Dull's got another two hours he could be working on this! Polish it until it shines!

Ah pretty much all my work so far (Doing Computer & Digital forensics) has been technical or lab reports or practical work in the case of crime scene examination (pretty fun tbh includes fingerprinting etc).. OH and exams ofc, 3 this year ~4 next year and i think its 2-3 final year.
    T
he lecturers "attached" to my course are really nice to get along with etc but one for the data and physical analysis (aka maths and physics) lecturer in lectures just has the demeanor that he thinks he's better than everyone and attempts to show off doing formulas in his head etc When I had a chat with him about past work and exam prep he seemed ok so aint all bad.. All it did though was make people dislike the module and not attend at the start of the year there was around 150 odd in the lecture the towards the end (bar revision ones) there was about 50-60 tops
