Antisocial, societal issues thread

I also support the right to strike, but that doesn't mean workers have the right to hold people to ransom and that's what TFL do. Doctor's, nurses, teachers, police etc... all have major responsibilities that affect people's lives in huge ways. TFL simply inconveniences people and businesses (that may be an over simplification, but certainly people don't suffer to the same level as say nurses on strike). They hold London to ransom and know that the government will eventually cave because they will be getting pressure from businesses. I have very little sympathy for train drivers because it honestly feels like they strike over any grievances and barely make any attempt to have real, meaningful dialogue and understand that there has to be some give and take.
I'd agree with all this if you change TFL to RMT/ASLEF.

We've had this for years in London. Delays blamed on upgrading the tube network. Having a central transport body actually works but the Unions without fail find something to complain and strike every year.

Tube strike causing havoc in London. Knock on impact on busses and workers who need to get in either walking or getting a Lime bike. TFL and Kahn better not cave in this time or RMT will be asking for 30 hours working week next year on top of more pay.

Black cabs, uber drivers must be making a packet.

Not Uber drivers, Uber is though.

I lived there and worked in a shop for years, it was always rough as ****, but I guess the Police station (which was at one end of the High St) is probably shut by now
I can see why people get annoyed when this **** gets completely ignored but they go around arresting people for holding Palestinian action signs or for saying nasty things online.

It's likely unfair as I imagine the police are very stretched, but the perception is they go after the low resistance cases and don't want to deal with the more difficult, confrontational stuff. Regardless of how true that is, until people visibly see it being dealt with, this perception will continue to grow.

I've had mixed experiences with the police so can see how it's quite easy to fall on either side of this. One of the worst was when I used to volunteer at a radio station and this older police officer came in to do a talk on radio. He treated us like dirt, would order us to do things and was really condescending when talking about the proliferation of drugs.

14 odd years of underfunding and constant goalpost shifting means they're going to grab the easy wins to tick the boxes. And yeah, low level criminals get away with it as an indirect consequence.

The arguments in this thread make no sense.

On one hand, the Tories underinvested and the austerity policies directly led to this behavior.

On the other hand, Debt to GDP ratio is the highest since WWII and Labor is projecting a massive deficit for next year.

These are mutually exclusive ideas and some of you lack the basic deductive reason to understand that.

So.. your argument is that the Tories spending 15 years destroying the economy, and telling our closest and biggest trading partner to bugger off, has nothing to do with the economic mess that Labour has inherited? Quite the opposite, in fact. Somehow, ruining the economy means that it should be performing brilliantly after 1 year of a new government.

Why on Earth did I hit "show ignored content"?

Part of the issue would be making promises to get elected that you can't keep ie no big three tax rises. As when Starmer got elected as leader it smacks of say anything to get in power, then bin it off. So it's now welfare reforms vs tax rises. Guess we'll know in the budget realistically.

There is no doubt the Tory Party left the country in a mess. Yet Labour shot themselves in the foot rowing back on finacial plans like WTF, welfare reforms that might have helped. Whilst damaging business and jobs with the autumn budget. So now they are faced with a bigger debt and growth isn't going particularly well.

You can't keep blaming the Tories whilst you're not solving the issues or potentially making them worse.

Unfortunately, like most issues, people aren't willing to do what's necessary. How many people in a community will actually help keep their local environment clean enough? How many people will actually be willing to live in smaller homes so we don't destroy more of their habitats? How many people will be willing to pay more taxes to help solve the problem?

I know it's not as simple as throwing money at it, but consistently within society, especially in Britain, people are too happy to ignore issues until it inconveniences them and often measures put in place by local or national government never go far enough to actually solve the problem on a long term scale. This short term view just costs the country more and puts off issue for another time.

BBC News - I went undercover as a cleaner at a failing care home. - BBC News

It's absolutely horrific the state of many care homes in this country, especially considering the extortionate rates they demand.

Made worse by Covid and on top of that Brexit. One question raised by a member of the audience on QT was “who’s going to wipe my arse when I am unable to?” Certainly not British workers on minimum wage.

And then there’s all these nursing homes in private hands - they aren’t doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.

I'm assuming AI will eventually take over arse wiping duties.
