[2019 Six Nations] Wales vs England (23/02/2019)

I'm bringing it back:

My point is theres 3 continued pages that have jack all to do with the game. Theres other threads for that.
It's an England Wales thread. It'll get far worse than drifting a little off topic before the week's out.

Sheep, arrogance etc. TRF tradition.

Same team as round 2 that isnt injury enforced, Mako, Ashton out, Genge, Big Joe(bench) in.

Whats the expected welsh team? I can guess the back line easier than the forwards.

I'd imagine this will be the Welsh side:

Smith, Owens, Francis
Hill, AWJ
Navidi, Moriarty, Tipuric

G.Davies, Anscombe
Parkes, JD2
Adams, Williams, North

Dee, Evans, Lee, Beard, Young/Wainwright, Williams, Biggar, Watkin.

May differ in a couple of positions, but not far off that. Can't see Halfpenny playing a part personally, but you never know.

If your team is about right then this should be pretty much the teams

Smith. Genge
Owens. George
Francis. Sinkler
Hill. Lawes
AWJ. Kruise
Navidi. Wilson
Tipuric. Curry
Moriarty. Billy

G.Davies. youngs
Anscombe. Faz
Adams. May
Parkes. Manu
JD2. Slade
North. Nowell
Williams. Daly

For me we win front row even without Mako.

Lawes has stepped up but AWJ is still a great player and hill and kruis are both good players so second row is a draw.

Back row wales have 3 great players. But wilson is solid, a workhorse and a pretty decent carrier, curry is stepping up at such a young age and playing really well and billy is billy we know what he can do. O think we edge the back row though by no means is the welsh back row weak.

9 though youngs has been playing better, id give this to Davies

At 10 faz no question

12 Manu no question

13 now Davies is a class player, very experienced and id prob say would edge out slade but on form slade is well ahead. Strong defence, a number of breaks and kivks to set up tries and a number of intercepts and thats just 2 games.

Wing May is hands down the best currently and id put the other 3 on par for different reasons,

Full back id say a draw, daly seems to be settling into the role though still not as strong under the high balls but both attscking FBs that play wing. And both playing very well.

I think england will have this one be it with kicks or ball in hand but it deffinatly wont be a walk over, expecting the hardest game the 6N for England. Prediction England by 8

I have a slightly bad feeling Wales could take this, as they do tend to raise their game against us, plus they're at home.

@Xsypher, 12 - 15 is a massive amount for this sort of game. We completely smashed and dominated Ireland, and still the margin was only 12.

The worry with England teams over the last decade has always been their propensity to get shell-shocked by opposition who are really up for it. Defense is always the difference in this game, so I don't want to see any of that flail tackling we've had over the years and which reared it's head briefly for France's first try last weekend.

Back row will have their work cutout to nullify Navidi or Young because disrupting England at source will be top of Wales' to do list.

Despite all of that, on paper and recent form we should really be winning this game.

I agree that 12-15 is a significant winning margin, but bear in mind we were leading Ireland by 19 points until that soft try in the last few minutes. It's also not like Ireland played badly - we just suffocated them!

As I mentioned in my last post, that scoreline is what I expect IF England perform like we have in the last couple of games, which means executing without error in everything we do at a rate of around 85%. Historically we have not been able to maintain this, so it's quite a big ask to expect it again.

In my opinion, England's dominance from a physicality perspective is unquestionable. Defensively England have looked far more solid and they have been considerably more accurate and effective in attack than the Welsh despite playing better teams. Wales will need a significant territorial advantage to win this game.

Therefore, I see there being two main variables that will dictate the outcome:

1) Exit Play / Kicking Accuracy - if England exit and defend exits like they have been, it will be very hard for Wales to build any momentum and get the field position they need to score points.

2) Discipline - this is linked to the above in that ill-discipline from England will give Wales the opportunity for chunk yardage that I just can't see them getting with ball-in-hand.

I think Wales have the players to challenge on both of the above, with a strong back three (positionally and aerially) and some good breakdown specialists, but personally I think unless England really have a meltdown, we will be too much for the Welsh.

This is not the game to comeback into after concussion probably better to have a bit more rest

So apparently Eddie brought in John Terry to give a pep talk to England ahead of the game this weekend...

I wonder what inspirational words he said?

"When you take a penalty, don't slip"

"Lose, and I'll try and shag your missus"
"At the end of the day it don't matter, playing for Chelsea is better than England anyway."

Is this a Wales vs England 6 nations thread or an England WC thread? Ive read through more cr*p about Englands WC squad than actual team comparisons. Theres so much I cant even be bothered to comment on the game right now.

I think that might be my fault. Apologies.

Part of the conversation was moved by the mods to the England rugby thread, which I hope might be more appropriate.

I'm just going to say it. Wales are on a winning streak because they've played a lot of soft games. It's how they've moved up to 4th. And then they have failed to perform against two week sides so far in the 6. They will be relying on home advantage and history to shake England enough that we get off our game. If that fails they simply don't have enough on the pitch to win this. Wales have never peaked to the level of England or Ireland, and we've just turned Ireland over at home when they were on a real winning streak against serious opposition.

This ones Englands.

Pin pulled. Grenade thrown.

I agree with most of what you say other than at 15. Daly isnt a 15 and Williams is world class

I expect Ball to partner Jones in the row. Has the extra physicality over the other options to combat the English power in the pack.

Are they even still playing this game? I thought they were going to hand the points to England and be done with it?

#arrogance

Surely not Anscome? He's perpetually out of position in defense, and gets a bit flappy under pressure. Seems perfect for a high-pressure match against a team that is punishing poor positioning...

Front row England, 2nd row marginally England, rest too close to call.
