I actually think the Lions and the Stormers might have a chance to win their games.

This will be the first time the Lions will be sending a full strength team to Argentina, and since it's the first round I can see that they're not going to give points away.

Chiefs - better side, less injuries than previous years at the start of the competition
Rebels - continuity and good play makers
Crusaders - just too much class
Hurricanes - more x-factor, more game breakers but this one can go to Tahs at home
Sharks - humid, far away but they should make it
Stormers - on paper they look seriously strong - leave the union bullsh** behind and they can do it
Lions - First game, think they will be better prepared and take this one

Heart say Jags, head says Lions.

I'm afraid Chiefs do have a few injuries, Solomona Alaimano is out and from what I've heard Wanui as well, and Sam Cane's out for ages. They also lost Big Karl to the Blues, they don't look that strong to me, in fact I'm struggling to figure their backline: 9. TTT/Weber 10. Dmac 11. Ete Nanai-Seturo 12. Alex Nakivell 13. Anton Lienert Brown 14. ??? 15. Shaun Stevenson

Doesn't exactly inspire fear and there is every chance Brodie will get rested as well.
Highlanders also have a few issues particularly at 10, but I fear the Chiefs may be the weakest they've been in some time.

Waratahs may have a slight chance as well, no Barret this coming weekend so they will likely be forced to play Debrazeni or Gardon-Bachop, but I do think the Hurricanes should probably win.

Sharks/Jags/Jags should put their opposition away. Stormers and Bulls a coin flip.

I am SO psyched for the season to officially begin. I only became a fan towards the end of last season, so I only caught the last 3 weeks of action or so. It does seem like the Crusaders are set to steamroll the competition again this year, but "they don't play the games on paper"...

One nice thing as (perhaps the only) American fan - since NZ is 18 hours ahead of where I am, the games that happen Friday evening for y'all will already be available for me to watch before I wake up Friday morning. Planning to watch the Brumbies match when I get to work, then the Highlanders game after lunch!

So the Lions are the first team to announce their team for their first game of the season. And it seems like they are going with a pretty strong team first up. A few interesting selections in the pack which shows me, that they are going to be extremely mobile with the combination of Schoeman, Dyamani and Whiteley in the loose forwards.

With McKenzie out it tips the scales towards the Highlanders

Isn't Sopoaga also out? It'd be interesting to see how the Highlanders backs fare without their star general...
Sorry, can't tell if this is sarcasm or if I'm missing something,,, Lima plays for Wasps now, so yeah, the Highlanders will def miss him! And is there a different Schoeman than the one who plays for Edinburgh?

I believe he's just saying that the Chiefs missing D-mac is somewhat countered by the Highlanders missing their previous 10 as well.

Highlanders always seem to over perform their talent somehow and Josh Ioane is apparently quite exciting, they also seem to not be resting quite as many players as the Chiefs, as even if Naholo isn't playing Ben Smith is.
Cheifs have a lot of exciting guys however, specifically both wings I liked the look of Sullivan when he played u20s, and apparently Nanai-Seturo is a gun.

All in all this Chiefs/Highlanders game looks exciting but it's not going to tell us too much about these teams, it's almost like another pre-season game.

Rebels/Brumbies both look full strength to me, Rebels should take it but they haven't been a very reliable team to bet on in previous years, and their pack still looks bad.
Brumbies team looks surprisingly strong, pack and backs. I have a feeling they could top the Aussie conference, Tahs and Rebels lack quality up front. That Brumbies pack looks decent.

I've added the teams to the OP as they have been made available.

I really like the Bulls team they've announced first up. Some new guys along with some experience. My biggest worry is still the scrums though.

Bulls team is out, looking pretty decent but maybe a little thin at lock.
I like your locks, more worried about your FRs ability to scrum. Also with Marco out your backrow looks average (minus Duane ofc), I'm sorry but Hanro has just failed to live up to expectations.
I do hope you're strong however! I'm glad they're playing Rosco rather than going for a more conservative approach with a Kotze/Russouw or Russouw/Stigling pairing.

I agree with Hanro, he's just not impressing me at all at this level. But because Marco and Roelof are still recovering from injury, I guess we have to go for Hanro. Maybe he surprizes us playing at blindside instead of at 8.

Apparently Eli Snyman is lock reserve, I don't know him at all. Pity RG is injured and Hendre Stassen is still in France. Hopefully Ivan van Zyl gets little to no game time!

**revised after team announcements***
Chiefs - better side, less injuries than previous years at the start of the competition
Brumbies - seems a more settled team, rebels to improve though
Crusaders - just too much class
Hurricanes - more x-factor, more game breakers but this one can go to Tahs at home
Sharks - humid, far away but they should make it
