2023-2024 transfers

Ealing signing like mad ********. They had Kevin O'Byrne last week, now Ross Kane and David O'Connor from Ulster and a few more English lads as well I believe.

And just like that a promising coaching career is up in smoke off the back of one game...... Leo will be getting the sack next. He's coming in as our defence coach anyway, which is good, because 'contact skills coach' sounds to me like the rugby equivalent of 'synergy specialist' or something - I don't really know what either do on a day today basis.
Let me be bitter. This is a long mourn.

Faf confirmed by Yokohama Canon Eagles

Surprised he didn't link back up with Ackermann, but they do have a South African coach and a few players (including Jessie Kriel)
I think the Saffa on the coaching staff is just a forwards coach (a former lock), but yes, with the mixed stories about life at a Japanese club (regularity of wages etc) it definitely helps to get the inside story from a friendly face.

Faf and Yu Tamura as a halfback pairing is a couple fit to grace any team in any league in my opinion. But personally, as much as I enjoy highlights from that league I wouldn't be picking any players operating at that level in my international side. Other than Japan obviously. :p

Seems a polarising figure, to put it politically.
Not seen much good said about him online tbh, which does mesh with him being "released" by "mutual agreement" from Bristol

Then again he was supposedly badmouthing Lam's coaching on twitter via burner account so can't be all bad

Never a good start but what was Bristol's defence like at that time? Hopfully if it was him thats has done that then he's learnt a lesson.

Third worst in the league, I think I read

But then that's "his" (/the burner account)s issues were - Lam not scheduling defence sessions (5mins a day, apparently)

5min a day and only 3rd worse? Theres actually 2 teams with worse defence than a team that trains it for 5 min a day?

Josh Barton the Coventry 9 is confirmed....at least we've brought in some 9 and 10s who are actually creative and running type half backs now.

Maybe changes in the style and performances are afoot.

Things coming out if KP is rhat Dean cast a big shadow over the whole set up and I'm not sure it was always a positive one.

Maybe Dave Walder will open things up

This just speaks the truth... same issue in county cricket at the moment, players living pay check to pay check/season to season almost.

This was about all the free playes atm. Looking at some of these players, its crazy they are going free.

I feel terrible for some of the Wasps lads released. Cameron Anderson, Marcus Watson, Pietr Scholtz, James Gaskell and Rob Miller are still squadless. Michael Le Bourgois has gone back to Bedford as player/coach and stated his dissatisfaction at the end of his Wasps career.

Gaskell should find a squad easily and wouldn't surprise me if Watson did too but the other lads could find it really hard.

Tbh while it's not great for individual players I find it hard to have a huge amount of sympathy. Rugby is a business like everything and personally sport has far too much money in it. Anyone being paid 100k (and yes I know many will be on less, but still most will be comfortable) a year to throw a ball around while nurses get less than 25k can't complain too much. Plenty of people are out of work or have to find low paying jobs everyday.

Yes you have a limited time in sport but there are always career options after. Unfortunately many only think about the present and don't have a long term plan when they know they have a shortish career. Basically I sympathise, but for me rugby is just experiencing what many businesses and people go through everyday.

Mark Wilson Confirmed back as a coach. He may be very inexperienced, but even if he can instill some of his work rate (and fitness), passion, aggression and steel, it'll be a massive boost to the whole squad.

HHmm why am i starting to develop a tiny bit of optimism for improvement next season?

Somewhat interesting in that those big name players are the reason the cap and squads have been squeezed really.

Let's be real if the cap was back up all that would mainly happen is that the Internationals would be back earning 400-500k rather than 250-350k
Exactly this. More to the point, I still don't understand where they think the money is coming from. It's widely known that virtually all of the Premiership clubs run at a loss.

Said it before: players don't seem to realise that rugby is a pretty niche sport, and the money isn't there for the stars to be on footballer wages
It doesn't help that there are millionaires happy to run clubs at massive losses so drive up the wage bills, but top players being on six figures just isn't sustainable
If you didn't have a player or two at each club on 5,6,700k then maybe that 100 unemployed players wouldn't be so high
