I hope it’s ok to ask here. My teenage son has received offers to join 2 different 7s academies. Both involve quite a bit of cost (kit and membership fees) and seem to operate as businesses (as opposed to the RFU 15s academies he’s been part of). They both seem to have mixed reviews from the limited comments I’ve seen online so I wondered if anyone had experience of either Eggchaser or UR7s they would be happy to share. He is really keen to get more involved in 7s so it would be good to make an informed decision about which offer to go with. Any input is appreciated.

I'll be honest, I have very little experience of either academy, but I have heard poor things about UR7.

It seems like a business, and strings some players along for the profit.

Some of the players I coach got involved with Eggchasers last season. None of them stayed in it for long, and they are all still keen players. Possibly not what you wanted to hear….

Hi sorry to bump this but my son got invited my UR7 recently so was wondering if you went ahead with either, or has anyone any other feedback for me please

Approach with caution. Some of my son’s teammates did take up the offer and won’t be renewing next season. A money making initiative over anything. Poorly organised with venues and dates changing last minute and very little training/game time for the outlay. The package sounds quite impressive but failed to deliver.

Stay away from Eggchasers, they are just out to make money any way they can.
Thanks, I feared that was the case although it doesn’t have the same high initial costs as UR7s - it’s such a shame as there is little opportunity to explore 7s (attends state school in an area where the clubs don’t really play either)

I took my 2 boys to the 9am Windsor Masterclass today. The EggChasers didn’t turn up to the session. Whilst stood with the other parents, wondering what was going on. We received a text at 8:52 to say the session was canceled.

That sounds disgusting. My son got through uR7s trial which I was surprised and they gave him top compliments on his play then with the offer received the costs. Ranging from £500-£1000. Looks like just 5 training sessions a virtual session and a festival. Feels like a con. So upset as my son is over the moon to have been selected and now I read these reviews that they just are raising kids hopes for money. Feels like football world

Our child has started their 2nd year with UR7's .. has also qualified for ACE Elite Rugby Academy at college and nominated for U18's England rugby trials.. UR7's is well organised, there are limits in the private sector to find the right establishments for the players needs and logistics. Look at the over all package, potential opportunities, experiences.. if you cannot afford the whole package, or just want a taster, slim it down to the bare minimum.. If your child enjoys rugby and wants to spend time with like minds and experienced players as coaches to mentor them.. would benefit from residentials .. go for it.. We were initially questioning this being a money making business, would it be worthwhile ... but for the coaches, the players, the whole experience is going from strength to strength each year. UR7's is well established and has many players that return as coaches and play at professional level. Whenever some of the UR7's coaches are away playing for England other coaches step in to replace them. Holistic programme, well thought out, tracks progress, UR7's can help with college applications/ bursaries. We did encounter Egg chasers, not impressed, other parents and players agreed, the club involved said they wouldn't invite them back. If you can afford professional club academies or summer camps.. look at those. Getting game time and valuable mentoring, feedback on how to improve from professional qualified coaches. Decide what you would rather spend your money on, e.g. a family holiday or a unique rugby experience connecting with a network of like minds that your child will benefit from.
