Soccer is the correct abbreviation of Association Football.

Football is a generic term used for team field sports which involve contesting a ball. Much like snooker and pool can both be generically referred to as billiards.

U10's top striker.. My fearsome right boot struck fear into the hearts of my opponents and the ball into the back of their net.

Americans love their acronyms in sport.... MLB for Major League Baseball, NFL for National Football League, NBA for National Basketball Association, NHL for national Hockey League etc.

For this reason alone, Americans will NEVER use "football" to describe Association Football, for the simple reason that their national competition is called Major League Soccer. (acronym MLS). If they were to change this to Major League Football, the acronym would be.... well you work it out!
