Antisocial, societal issues thread

In this lady's case got nothing against her personally she's just taking advantage of the system encouraging her to pop them out. But She gets to do exactly the same work as a UK resident employee and pay much less tax as a result. But it goes to the unfairness especially as jobs are getting scarcer here (see hospitality figures) and it doesn't really matter where you're doing it apart from for tax purposes.
Unfortunately that's the system. It doesn't make it moral or ethical. You have countless people taking advantage be it self-employed cash only businesses, off shore accounting, various countries offer tax breaks to individuals and businesses.

Take Dr Martins boots, they decimated employment in Irthlingborough because it was cheaper to move everything abroad.

Without knowing the ladies personal circumstances the amount of anti-semitism in the UK. I could hardly blame her for going abroad if the employer allows it.

Little anecdote, and it is relevant to the thread, yesterday I found out my amazing new neighbour who moved in a few months ago is Jewish.

I was chatting with him in the garden after he was showing me around his house and we were chatting about me cooking some food for him and I said, probably a bit weird when I think about it, "I didn't know you were Jewish, il be sure to bare that in mind when cooking and make sure it's kosher"

He looked shocked to be honest, and said "how did you know"'I said I noticed some Jewish cooking books in his house as well as a Star of David necklace on his bed side table. He looked more at ease and we had a great 30 min chat or so about how he never wears his necklace outside and doesn't put anything overtly Jewish in his window. I said that's sad and he should do it if he wants and that he doesn't have to worry about our street (which to be honest I'm not 100% sure is true) and he just said, he knows of too many stories over the last few years from family and friends scattered over the place that even if he feels he's in a tolerant area he won't take the risk. Said it's gotten worse over last few years.

The guy is such a sweetheart and said "I can understand why to a certain extent" which is wild. He tells his kids not to tell anyone of their Jewish ancestry as well. How ****** up is that.

Off-shoring services in accountancy and tax is happening a lot. And it's all down to cost. Sadly there is a flip side to that and it means it attracts a lot of resentment and feeds into the whole one rule for one and one rule For another. It'll just mean the likes of Reform who I haven't heard a peep regarding this attracting more votes.

There’s less incentive to stay if you can do the job remotely somewhere else. Just have to navigate the other country’s tax system as well and accept fewer benefits/holidays.

I'm more worried that you're in his bedroom close enough to observe the bedside table.

Is there something you're not telling us?

🤔🤔

The Muslim and Jewish people i know are all great. All the Muslims I know are from Iran and are more than happy to explain why it's awful there but are quite proud of older Persian history, art etc.

Yet they will say they are Persian as they get abuse otherwise.

Most people are alright at the end of the day.

That’s going to be the title of a psychology paper I’m going to write one day.

So RMT want a 32 hr working week and increased pay. Yeh totally reasonable. Wish I could ask for that at my work and then when they say no go on strike. Well f em I’m WFH next week.

They are going to strike themselves out of existence... 32 hour working week? Stress and fatigue? I may be mistaken but they drive a ******* train, it's neither mentally nor physically taxing.

South Cambs Council now do a four day week. Studies show it does improve productivity. My colleague there gets the same money me but a day less. Lucky *******.

That's fair enough but I don't see how a train driver increases their productivity. They can't exactly drive faster or leave stations earlier.

But their concentration from fatigue will be increased.

However yes all studies have shown a 4 day working week with 9-10 hour days are better for both employee and employer. It'll happen eventually. I use to love being on half days on Fridays.

I tried the 4 day week, didnt like it. Spent my Fridays checking my work phone.

I went the other way, 45 hour contract over 5 days, and I pop some overtime in. im super lucky I get near total freedom in writing my own calendar though, so theres plenty of time for school drop offs, pick ups, driving range and gym visits throughout.

I dont think any one prescriptive model suits, id like to think given the freedom companies could design a work week that fits the culture of the company, and optimised the employee productivity, lifestyle and retention rates. I mean, I probably sound naive, and it probably has been 15 years plus that I have worked for anything but a charity or NGB, I remember being worked into the ground at times, the 100 hour mcdonalds work week, the 7 day construction, and wagon driving days and the office dark till dark...

Jesus even typing those filled me with that feeling of dredd upon waking up thinking of work!

Isn't a reduction of hours, and a pay increase just a massive pay rise? Most drivers would be eyeing up that overtime surely, I know I would!

It's a blunt instrument that they use to get their way. Wouldn't be surprised if TFL caves in at the last minute and it gets called off. If it's not pay and conditions, it's health and safety.
It's difficult for me because I'd always back a workers right to strike. Whether I agree with why they are striking is a different matter.

Take nurses as an example they always had an ethos of never striking as it caused harm. However they were taking advantage of with poor pay and conditions by various home secs and thought sod this.

The police gave up the right to strike in the 70's for better pay and conditions. Since then it's been the attitude of various governments that they can do what they like over pay and conditions and they can't do a thing about it.

I’d differentiate between RMT and Drs and nurses striking. RMT are the most militant union we have left in the UK and they exercise their right to strike as a show of strength because they know that they are still able to- disrupt the city of London.

What they don’t seem to fathom is that things have changed since Covid and office workers realise they don’t have to go to the office 5 days a week.

I also support the right to strike, but that doesn't mean workers have the right to hold people to ransom and that's what TFL do. Doctor's, nurses, teachers, police etc... all have major responsibilities that affect people's lives in huge ways. TFL simply inconveniences people and businesses (that may be an over simplification, but certainly people don't suffer to the same level as say nurses on strike). They hold London to ransom and know that the government will eventually cave because they will be getting pressure from businesses. I have very little sympathy for train drivers because it honestly feels like they strike over any grievances and barely make any attempt to have real, meaningful dialogue and understand that there has to be some give and take.

I get the frustrations, but id like most industries to have this powers, certainly nurses and police who no longer are viable career options IMO.

They've been degraded so much, the running joke around midwifery circles at least, is that after 3 years service you get promoted to Aldi for the payoff. Thats a sad state of affairs.
