It's time for Paul Treu to go?

Don't get me wrong he has been a great servant to Sevens rugby in our country, but imo 3rd or 4th place should not be seen as good enough. We need to challenge N.Z, Fiji and co. much more consistently and at the moment are well below them in terms of quality. No doubt we have the players, ffs we have the best Sevens player in the world.... but we need to actually be challenging them for the ***le, if not winning it.

Thoughts?

My question is, who else??

who would even take the job?? the way I see it, it's one of those jobs where every good coach will see it as a last stop to a career... I might be wrong though, but that's how I see it. You don't really hear other coaches wanting to become part of the 7's setup even just at provincial level.

But hopefully it being in the Olympics will make it more appealing to other coaches. I really don't know who would take the job, but surely somebody would have a slight interest in it.

I'm sure there will be someone who would like the job, but the question is, what happens after that? like in Paul's case... do you become a backline coach for a XV squad and no longer be the top dog and work again under someone else? It's a bit of a dead-end job IMO.

But like you say, as the sport grows and gets more popular, maybe it's not a bad idea for young up-and-comers to make their mark...

Another question to be asked- though the 2016 Olympics is four years off- is would you want the specialist who have been at for while to be the only players in the squad or would you allow someone like Aplon (though he'll be too old by then probably) with 7's experience who might want to play in the Olympics but who has been playing the XV man game for the last couple of years to play? There are a number of player in the SA Xv man game who either has 7's experience or would do very well with some experience.

Yes, but this is off topic... this is about the Coach. And while I think Paul has done a fantastic job, I fear the guys he's picking are just not on par... Whenever we Fiji, NZ or Samoa... they overpower us. Paul should stop picking little guys with skills, pick bigger guys, with less skills that you can teach to become better...

Well we certainly have a lot of powerful yet speedy athletes in the mold of Pierre Spies in SA so that shouldn't be a problem. You'd only really need 2 small, elusive gamebreaker-type players in any case to work off of these guys so I guys I'm with you on picking more powerful players. In 7's straight-line speed counts for a lot more than in Rugby Union and we certainly have a lot of stock in that mold.

Why not give an ex player a go? What's Fabian Juries up to now days?

They must stop selecting crappy players. It is a international tournament/series. Not your local development center. That crap you should have done at school level. There is no such thing as over power in rugby. They tackle like paloekas
