Bath or "The masochists guide to rugby"

If Burt is available and willing - then absolutely grab him; and offer him HC or DoR as he wishes, and whoever he wants to work with.

Otherwise, I'm not ready to call time on Hooper just yet; I'm never comfortable firing a HC with less than 2 years (for rugby reasons anyway), and a non-coaching DoR surely gets a little longer. Yes, he's been involved for a while, but Hooper has only been making the decisions for 18 months, whilst Hatley has been there for less than a year (and doing too many jobs at once). Of course, there's also the element of my bias as those calling most loudly for his head, were also calling for his head before he was appointed, and mostly calling for his head as a player - I question their objectivity here (there's also that they keep referring to Baxter whilst *****ing about Hooper's career trajectory, Baxter had an almost identical career trajectory and was blatantly the model used when appointing Hooper). Beyond that, I think back all the way to a few months ago, when Hooper and Hatley had Bath playing the best rugby they have since Ford's reign came crashing down; and rugby I loved watching - so I know that they have the capacity.

Ultimately, Bath have been less than the sum of their parts for 5 years, and yes, I'm getting tired of it. But Hooper and Hatley managed the best spell of rugby in that period, and deserve a chance to turn things around (IMO). If there's an obvious upgrade willing and available, then yes, let's get them (regardless of current form). AKA "We're always on the lookout for an upgrade to any member of our team"
If we're still playing like drains by the end of this season, then start seriously looking for options (but only hiring someone with a proven track record). AKA "We're not happy, and are looking at our options"
If we're still playing like drains 3 months into the 2021-22 season, then fire them. AKA "/ok, you need to get the **** out of here"

NB: I'm usually on the conservative end of these things; and I haven't actually watched any rugby this season (Bath or anyone else) so don't have the emotion of watching us play badly.

Terrible news that Dave Egerton has died at only 59 after being hospitalised with COVID.

160+ appearances and loads of silverware. Pretty sure that he won one of his Eng caps off the bench with so little time left he didn't even do up his bootlaces.

RIP.

Very sorry to hear that. I grew up following Bath in his era because it was where all the Cornish talent at the time ended up (Spurrell, Haag, Trevaskis, Dawe, Reed).

I got talking to one of his Bath colleagues in my local a few years back and was listing the players I remembered, his face lit up when I mentioned "Egers" - he liked a beer apparently!

Josh Bayliss called up by Scotland (and Jamie Bhatti, but that's way less surprising) - didn't know he was eligible.
Good player, good enough for a few caps, but not going to get close for England with our strength in depth.

Leaves Bath up the Khyber though - we'd already run out of locks and now we've run out of backrows

Looks like we have signed Cips. This could be either brilliant or a disaster. I really hope he has got over being a complete diva and focuses on the rugby.

Hmmm - we mostly want a senior FH to mentor the youngsters for 1-2 years.
I'm not convinced that Danny is the right man to play "mentor". Equally, we're unlikely to find a better option in terms of on-pitch performance, even though he can be hit and miss. Of course, his on-field performances, with Bath's backs outside could be magical

Luckily, we'll have Spencer for the kicking tee

I don't think it'll be a disaster - it's just the 1 year after all; and isn't he a father now? that tendds to calm people down a bit

You got some good young prospects at 10?

Jaco Coetzee has arrived in Bath - does this mean he's registered to play from now? May? or is he just early as there's no SR back home?

That's assuming Bailey, and no-one else is promoted from the academy; with no more incoming (or outgoing) players.

IMO I'd like another lock, and ideally another THP (though that could be a promotion for Griffin) but we seem a little congested in the back 5 of the pitch - I'd happily lose a centre and a winger; especially if that salary can be put towards a lock

May be a silly question, but what are the stars for?

Definitely the 2nd row looks a bit bare.

That's what I assume, but thought I'd check. Thought it might have been leadership group as well, but Ewels would have been there too.

Current internationals?
More-or-less.
Nailed on absent for international windows (so a little extra depth coverage required).

Whenever I do these this way, I feel that I want 2 players for each position + a 3rd choice for each specialist position / less specialised unit.
Beyond that, you want (at least) a bench's worth of academy players who are ready to step up for 4-6 bench appearances in the season; and cover for nailed-on internationals who miss 1/3 of the season, and maybe for the high-attrition positions and the odd nice-to-haves (which seems unlikely with a reduced cap).

Well, we've now had a few announcements on academy playes, and confirmation that JJ an Gray willl still be with us next year, so:
