Fullback Paul Williams scored a brace of tries as the Blues beat the Chiefs 31-21 in their pre-season friendly in Albany on Friday night.

Williams was the star of the outing, otherwise overshadowed by the injury to lock Ali Williams, as his side scored five tries to three in an open and entertaining encounter.

The loss was also the Chiefs' second in as many pre-season outings after going down to the Highlanders last week.

After a scoreless first 20 minutes, which showed plenty of enterprise, but little impact on the scoreline, the Blues opened their account when Williams latched onto a loose kick from Mike Delaney to start and finish an attack from the halfway line.

The Chiefs hit back when Tim Nanai-Williams chipped and gathered to score under the posts shortly before the break, but his joy was short-lived as Charlie Faumuina went over from close range on the stroke of half time.

The Chiefs started well after the break, as hooker Aled de Malmanche crashed over shortly afterwards, but the Blues ran in two quick tries through George Pisi and Rudi Wulf that gave the Blues the lead again.

Liam Messam pulled a try back to bring things closer as the game wound down, but Williams added a second try, finishing off a backline move to ensure a Blues victory.

Blues – Tries: Paul Williams 2, Charlie Faumuina, George Pisi, Rudi Wulf tries. Conversions: Stephen Brett 2,Mike Harris

Chiefs – Tries: Tim-Nanai-Williams, Aled de Malmanche, Liam Messam .Conversions: Callum Bruce, Mike Delaney, Stephen Donald.[/b]
