Hi guys,

Since April I started to put my running stats down in this online app: Runkeeper.

I added my weight and height and my BMI is 25, just perfect :D:D I'm planning to work out harder as the Gaelic training sessions will kick off again in only 10 days and because I fell ill my fitness isn't what it used to be.

As most rugby players, we do easily bulk up, but how does this work to calculate your BMI. I'm 197 cm and 96 kg so if I train regular I could loss 4-5 kg of sweat and gain some extra muscle.

Any advice on it.

cheers.

BMI is a load of poo - really doesn't work unless you're exactly average

According to BMI i'm verging on overweight, whereas in reality I'm too skinny for my height

Most rugby players would be obese by their standards too, e.g James Haskell (6ft4, 17st13) comes out with a BMI of 30.5 which is obese

I know what you mean, I've always been too skinny, even now you can see my bones.
Well, I guess it's not a bad idea to get rid of my little cider belly and get in shape.

Thanks for the feedback

Yeah I'm considered obese by it and I like to think I don't look it.

Look in the mirror....if you see a belly bulging over your waist band then you are overweight. Im 36 now and still playing with guys 10 years older and 5 stone heavier than me. My advise: worry about your workrate and your over all fitness, if you can last 80 minutes at the level you play dont worry about a bit of a beer/cider gut and if you think you are too skinny really dont worry the opposition will think you are fit and worry that you will skin them.

However if you are playing the GAA you will need to be fit don't know what the standard is like in your area.

I play grassroots club rugby but also run long distance in the summer and have a nice little approaching middle age beer gut. Fact is there are plenty of pro rugby players with a high BMI but thier general fitness and workrate is very good. My advise is dont worry about your size unless its effecting your game.

I'm talking to Ambokodo who's playing Gaelic Football

Well during GAA practice I'm one of the better runners ( as I run 6 times a week working on distance 5-10 km, speed and interval).
This weekend I will have run 20 km, and next week is interval again, should be sufficient to start with a easy GAA practice ( we only restart on the 26th) cheers for the advice.
