Booze Thread

anyone able to recommend a reliable booze delivery service during the current covid crisis? Had a look at Beerwulf, but seen some bad reviews on trusted pilot. A lot have also jacked up their prices during this time.

Trying BeersofEurope.co.uk because got good reviews and really wanted to get my hands of some Weihenstephaner Vitus weizenbock beers, as I have heard such great things about this beer. And really into my wiessbiers atm.

Weihenstephaner Vitus. 7.7% ABV. Absolutely beautiful beer. Highly recommended.

I have drunk far too much since I started working at home. More than usual!

Good ol' St Austell's Bottle conditioned Proper Job. A very hoppy IPA.

This looks amazing! Astounding, the crispness of the foam on top really looks good.

Alcohol has been banned toggether with tobacco in South Africa going for the sixth week now, have started to brew some of my own drinks and i now have a new found appreciation to the process that goes into beers.

It is a very special beer. Had another one yesterday and now only have one left. Pretty expensive here in the UK and not found in the normal supermarkets. Although it is 7.7% ABV, it doesn't taste it. Had a taste of Mckewans Champion ale, which is 7.3% ABV and it is pretty grim stuff taste wise in comparison.

Sorry to hear about the ban on alcohol in SA. That doesn't sound great. Happy brewing at home. Would be good if you can let us know how it goes and if you can post a pic. I have viewed a few vids on youtube showing how to, but it looks very complicated and for me better off for me to just go out and buy a bottle of beer.

this one is a Schneider Weisse Tap 7 hefe Weissbier. A little bit more malty than your usual Hefeweizens but really wonderful refreshing beer nevertheless and lovely creamy head.

Were you told in advance? As in, did you have a chance to stock up a bit or was this info released and implemented simultaneously?
Brutal stuff.
I can think of a couple of countries that would go to war for less.

Yea these tend to be very expensive, an Erdinger Weissbier here is ridiculously expensive, so I only drink these imported/ bavarian Weisbeers on special occasions and then turn to the craft breweries for my regular diet.

I started with making a wild yeast apple cider and it turned out very nice with a lekke kick. Within 3 weeks I had 20 litres of homemade cider, using very strict sanitary practices.
Im trying to source grain and hops now (if it was not harvesting season now then I would have grown them myself for the extra satisfaction).

It really is much easier than you would think, the hardest part is sourcing the ingredients and equipment.
Then you cook your germinated grain seeds, add hops cook some more (no barley for this Weiss). then remove grain and hops from liquid add your sugary yeast mixture and you now let it ferment away for about three weeks. Then bottle, add some more sugar for carbonation. I probably oversimplified it a bit but that's the gist of it.

Im for sure going to try those two beers you suggested once we can buy alcohol again. Very keen to test your statement that it's about 7.7% without really tasting like a 7%. You get this danish faxe beer that's like 8% or something and its really difficult to get down

No, they really did not. I mean they told us there would be a lockdown three days in advance but not many people thought that they would ban alcohol and tobacco. You should see the smokers they are going crazy. The black market has shot up immensely.
You could find alcohol on the black market about a week after the ban but the police and Army cracked down heavily on illegal trade. Some bottle stores were looted etc. Now, basically no one can get alcohol. They made it illegal to brew it yourself.
This article show how they even went to houses and destoryed home brews, then they thought while they were at it they would also throw away the food these people were making. its horrifying as these people dont have much food, many go to bed hungry because they are not getting money since the economy is shut down. Do yourself a favour and go check the images in this link below.

Also, the transport of alcohol is illegal so the breweries can't even transport their produce to cold storage facilities, now millions of litres of beer are going stale.

People still find cigarettes on the black market, generally at the corner stores run by Pakistani men and woman. But the idea from the government was to only allow essential goods, and they said alcohol will make people beat each other in confinement and cigarettes is not good for coronavirus. People became more ****** about this then they did about the actual lockdown. In fact people widely supported the lockdown and commended the government, but their draconian measures really turned opinion very rapidly. look at the American alcohol ban years ago, it just went underground.

About the tobacco ban i just laugh because i dont smoke. Its funny to see family and friends complain. But the alcohol ban affected me directly, it became personal, but also a great learning experience.

Thanks unrated, I've been meaning to ask more about this for a few days. Ironically, a few days in to lockout here, off licences were added to the list of essential services!

Steer clear of Erdinger if you can. I started off on this when I started on Hefeweizens and liked it but once I tried Weihenstephaner, Schneider Weisse, Franziskaner and evening Reinbacher Erdinger is definitely a step down, when I went back and tried it again.

Here are 3 separate reviews if Weihenstephaner Vitus and I would agree that it just doesn't taste like a 7.7% ABV.

Back to the good 'ol London Pride. Fruity and malty ale, but still miss the cask version.
