SA squad:

Chris Dry, Schalk Brits, Frankie Horne, Kyle Brown, Branco du Preez, Cheslin Kolbe, Justin Geduld, Cecil Afrika, Bryan Habana, Seabelo Senatla, Cornal Hendricks, Warren Whiteley

What a combination of power, speed and skill.

Looks like there's a good relationship between the Springboks, Sevens and SARU and about working together for a change...

Whiteley!! LOL, s at least he gets Bok jersey even if it is for 7's. Looks like a good squad! Hendricks and Kolbe both VXs players with 7s experience and proven performers in the format but it'll certainly be interesting to see how the two named and Whiteley goes.

Well at least he gets some reprieve for the amazing work he has done. Maybe this is a way for him to pave his way into the 15-side Bok team...

I suspect you mean something else; 'reprieve'? But yeah, excited for him and I too hope this could be a stepping stone to the XVs side as I think e could bring some excitement- in his case the stats back up the general perceptions of him being a special player and IMO it's more difficult to shine in a poor performing team.

re·prieve [ri-preev] Show IPA
verb (used with object), re·prieved, re·priev·ing.
1. to delay the impending punishment or sentence of (a condemned person).
2. to relieve temporarily from any evil.

noun
3. a respite from impending punishment, as from execution of a sentence of death.
4. a warrant authorizing this.
5. any respite or temporary relief.

To me this is a form of temporary relief for him...

I'm sure I used it correctly... No need for us Afrikaners to get into a squabble about an english word, as we both might be wrong...

Nothing new, Whitley is a Bok sevens player?
Happy with the squad, very happy

EDIT

Johan Dyers asked: You spent the 2012/13 season with the BlitzBokke. What did you add to your game?

Warren Whiteley: It was a great experience and I learnt a lot from then coach Paul Treu. As a young player, experiencing Sevens puts you at a great advantage when heading into the 15-man code. You gain a much better understanding of space and as decisions have to be made very quickly, your skills improve immensely as well as your fitness and speed. While I'm a slow starter owing to my lanky legs, once I get into my running stride, I'm not too bad over 100 metres.

Well! Well, I can't say that I recall but that explains a lot actually.

I should probably just shut up and lurk...

Ever since I turned Italian...

Looks like a solid squad, I really liked the look of Kolbe at the JWC last year. Has he been involved in super rugby much this year?

Kolbe has sat out the large majority of SR injured but formed a very potent 14/15 partnership with the now injured Gio Aplon for Western Province in Currie Cup last year that was only really contained by the Sharks in the final.

He was injured until the last 2-3 matches of the S15

Jeez, that is a good looking squad! I don't think I've seen Habanna play 7's, but can imagine he'll be pretty darn handy. Kolbe is another boss player. Interesting Toulon are willing to let him go for the Commonwealth Games..

Will be interesting to see the side NZ manage to put together. I hear rumours Vito is likely to feature, also would be good if Hosea Gear returns for it. Some SR players like Frank Halai (who is amazing at 7's) would be great, or young guns like Tevita Li or Ardie Savea. NZ usually manage to put a good combination of great XV's and 7's players together in these squads, but it'll have to be special seeing that SA squad. If I could pick an All Black, Julian Savea would tear up..

We named our wider 7's training squad (of 18 players) a few weeks ago. Unlike South Africa we haven't included any 'big names', but have stuck largely with the same squad they have had all season. We only have 3 (fringe) Super Rugby players in the squad: Pita Ahki, Kurt Baker, and Adam Whitelock. The only real notable inclusion in the training squad is Declan O'Donnell, who I have not heard much about for a year or two.

The NZ training squad is as follows:
Pita Ahki, Kurt Baker, Tomasi Cama, Scott Curry, Ambrose Curtis, Sam Dickson, DJ Forbes, Jack Goodhue, Bryce Heem, Akira Ioane, Gillies Kaka, Ben Lam, Tim Mikkelson, Declan O'Donnell, Lote Raikabula, Sherwin Stowers, Joe Webber, Adam Whitelock

Anyways...back to the South African squad. The likes of Brits, Habana, and Whiteley are very interesting inclusions. They are all good players, but it will interesting to see how well they transition to the 7's game (as 7's and 15's are very different games these days...). Should be an interesting tournament!

I have the sneaking suspicion that Habana is on his way back to SA. With Toulon continuously signing more and more players, It just seems that a guy like Habana would become frustrated by not playing as much as he should. I could be wrong...

Schalk Brits was part of the previous Commonwealth Games group, but then pulled out before the Games started due to injury. As for Whiteley, He was part of Paul Treu's 7's squad a few years ago.

Having previous 7's experience is good, but I'm more referring to the conditioning of the players. You need a very different sort of fitness in 7's than you XV's, and it's not something you can just get with a few weeks training. For example (from a NZ perspective) the likes of Liam Messam and Victor Vito were superb 7's players, but they were 5-10 kgs lighter when they were playing 7's. The likes of Messam and Hosea Gear were included in our last Commonwealth games squad but I felt both were very quiet, and completely outshone by more regular 7's players (Baker, Cama, Forbes etc). This of-course is not to say Habana, Whiteley, and Brits won't be good at this tournament, I'm just not sure they will add anything more than 'specialist' 7's players who are fully conditioned for 7's, and have been playing together as a team all season....
