Bulls prop Bees Roux has been arrested in connection with the death of a police officer in Pretoria.

While the details of the incident remain unclear, it is reported that the metro official was found beaten in the middle of a street in the city's central business district. Colonel Eugene Opperman of the South African Police Service confirmed that a case for murder had been opened.

"Yes, he was arrested earlier this morning," he said. "A case of murder had also been opened."

Roux's attorney, Ernst Serfontein, admitted that the player, who represented the Royal XV against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, was involved in the incident but was unable to provide further information.

"I believe there was an incident where a policeman died and I know he was involved in the incident," he said. "How he was involved I don't know yet, I can't tell you."

The Blue Bulls union responded to the news with a statement on their official website: "It has come to the Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd's attention that Bees Roux has allegedly been involved in an incident involving a metro policeman last night in Pretoria.

"We do not have any factual information at this stage, but have been informed that the policeman passed away. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the relatives of the deceased. We are not in a position to make any further comments in this regard."

Alcohol+ Blue Bulls= Trouble

Why on earth was he drinking and staying up so late on the day of a game anyway? With that kind of attitude, don't think the Bulls will be too concerned if/when he becomes a jail bird.

He will most likely get raped in jail, most murderers in SA do

Bulls Super Rugby Prop Bees Roux has been arrested on suspiciion of murder after he allegedley beat a police officer to death.

Roux will appear in court in Pretoria and face a charge of murder.

Police say that the Police officer was found on the ground in a street in Pretoria late at night.

The police officer was rushed to hospital with extensive injuries but died.

115 kilogram Roux won the Super 14 this year with the Bulls who issued a press statement saying,"We do not have any factual information at this stage, but have been informed that the policeman passed away.

"We would like to express our sincerest condolences to the relatives of the deceased."

"We are not in a position to make any further comments in this regard. The matter will be handled by Bees Roux's legal representatives EW Serfontein and Partners."

Reports suggest that Roux was pulled over by a random metro police patrol on suspicion of drunk driving.

Sergeant Johannes Mogale, 38, who was apparently patrolling on his own, left his patrol vehicle in Hatfield, got into Roux's car and drove towards the N4 highway.

Security guard Richard Motenegi was on duty at a local business in Schoeman Street.

He noticed Roux's white Polo moving "extremely slowly" towards the N4 in Hatfield. As he watched, two people fell out of the driver's door while the car was moving.

"I saw the big guy on top of the metro cop. He was punching him in the face and hitting his head hard against the tar road.

"I was shocked because the metro cop was not fighting back, he was powerless because this guy was way bigger than him and he had overpowered him. He was already bleeding from the punches and his head hitting the ground," said Motenegi.

Roux apparently noticed the car was about to leave the road, so he ran back to it to stop it.

Then he returned to Mogale, who was lying on the road.

"He started beating the guy again, lifting him off the ground and slamming him down so that his head would hit the ground first.

"While he was hitting him, he was busy saying (the cop) was trying to steal his car. He kept saying 'You're trying to steal my car, let's see you take it now!'

"When he saw me getting closer, he jumped off the cop and started charging towards me, angrily asking whether I was one of the cop's friends trying to steal his car," Motenegi told IOL.

Motenegi said Roux eventually stopped beating the police officer and ran to his car, where he started hitting the steering wheel with his hands and holding his head as if in deep thought.

"He then ran back to the guy he had beaten and tried to wake him up. It appeared that he had realised what he had done, because everyone there could see that he was very, very drunk.

"When police came, they found him next to the metro cop, telling him that he needed to be strong as he could still make it," he said.

Netcare 911, who were the first paramedics at the scene, declared Mogale dead within minutes. The attending medics confirmed Mogale had died from extensive injuries.

Police could not explain why Mogale was driving Roux's car but it is thought that Mogale might have been driving Roux home after he was found to be too drunk to drive.

****.

I posted that as it gave Richard Motenegi's (witness) account on what happened.

Wow, just... what the.

This is really disgusting. This is a black page in South African rugby history. It's news like this that puts this whole dark cloud over SA rugby.

You have to be careful not to condemn a man until he's been tried and convicted but judging from the eye witness reports, whoever commited this is a disgusting human being.

Of course, but then again, not always. People are people, a judge and a jury make the same judgements as we do just with more evidence.

what?
what on earth has this got to do with South African rugby?
had this man been a plumber or a bus driver would it be a black day for South African plumbing or public transport?
Had he beaten some guy to death ON the rugby pitch then maybe your comment would be accurate, but just because a man plays rugby for a living is hardly any justification for tarnishing all of rugby in his country!

I am just scared this will have a negative effect on rugby. Why is it mentioned that he's a rugby player? That alone is negative news for SA rugby.

Negative News= [BLINK]Money[/BLINK]

The lastest news is that the cop pulled him over because he drunk, and the an altercation ensued where Bees accused the cop of trying to steal his car. Roux only stopped when other police officers arrived at the scene, and then he realised what he had done.

He will go to jail, he will blame alcohol, but nothing will be done

Mmm. Not so sure about that LordHope. Maybe if it was just an assault of a Joe Citizen, but he KILLED A COP. In this country you get the electric chair for that. Every time.

After reading what he did made me feel sick in my stomach...

As bad as this is, it's like child's play compared to everything else that happens here every day.

He deserves life though. You DON't go killing people brutally on a 'suspicion' that he was trying to steal your car. If the cop was in fact really driving him home, then this guy needs to get bummed while in his cell. Absolutely no pity for the fool. We will see what happens once the facts are laid out in court.

So they support drunk driving? Is that what PdV is saying?

Rumors are spreading like wildfire that PDV could be dismissed by Sunday... Good. Idiot has run his stupid mouth for the last time. Good riddance.
