The late score lifted the Stags to a thrilling 17-14 win over New Zealand’s Kelston Boys, the rugby-mad country’s 2011 National Top Four reigning champions.
“This was an historic win for our school and a tremendously important achievement for Canadian high cchool rugby,†said Shawnigan head master David Robertson after the victory, the biggest upset of the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational, staged each year for the best teams in the world in Fukuoka, Japan.
“Canadian teams have traditionally not done well at this tournament in the past,†continued Robertson, “so it was a delight for everyone involved and for the tournament organizers to have a Canadian team deliver such a strong performance.â€
Kelston, which has sent a number of its alums to the famed All-Blacks, jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Shawnigan found itself defending the goal line in the early stages of the match.
But after forcing an error deep in Kelston territory, the Stags used a solid scrum and great back-up play to give Cody Milne enough space to force his way over the try line to knot the score.
A du Toit penalty kick put Shawnigan Lake on top 8-5, and that score stood to the half.
In the second, Shawnigan’s committment to defence took running space away from the New Zealanders, and the Island team carried that over into the Kelston side of the pitch.
A penalty kick and a drop goal were the reward for great perserverance, and a 14-5 lead was the result.
However Kelston scored two quick tries to go ahead by one, 15-14, in the dying stages of the contest.
However du Toit’s penalty kick just outside the 10-metre line secured the upset.

Shawnigan officials said it was the first time that a Canadian side has won more than two games at Sanix. The Stags, however, finished third in their very competitive pool and were ready to resume play looking for a ranking in the 9-16 slots.

Biggest win in Canadian High School rugby period... they didn't advance to the semis due to aggregate from their first game (pity the jetlag) but they went 2 and 1 and made everyone proud.

Amazing news!!!! It's like a run away train of great stories coming out of Canadian rugby circles these days, tough break on the aggregate still looks like some fantastic results.

Now if we can just beat Italy in June!!! BTW O'Toole is back in Vic trainign do you think he is going to get picked up by a championship or D2 club or have u heard anything?

Kelston Boys' High School ended up winning the entire competition as well, which puts it in perspective.

One of New Zealand's leading rugby nurseries, Kelston Boys' High School, has won the 2012 Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament in Japan, beating English school Truro College 37-24 to continue an impressive run of results for Kiwi High Schools.
Pass It On

The previous two tournaments had been won by Hamilton Boys' High School, where current Welsh coach Warren Gatland is among their notable alumni, but this season Kelston was able to make it three straight unofficial High School 'World Championships' for New Zealand.
Kelston Boys' High School, where former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry was once headmaster, is well known around local rugby circles – with Mils Muliaina the most capped All Black to graduate, while current Sevens captain DJ Forbes once studied there.
The 2010 Women's World Cup Black Ferns coach Brian Evans is the current headmaster.
The Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational tournament began in 2000, and is held in the Global Arena in Munakato, Fukuoka.
It is the seventh time a New Zealand High School has won the championship, with Hamilton Boys' High School (2011 and 2010), Christchurch Boys' High School (2006 and 2005) and Rotorua Boys' High School (2004 and 2003) other winners.
It continues a remarkable year of rugby for the High School, winning the BNZ Condor Sevens, the Moascar Cup and the National Top Four.

I haven't heard anything specific yet Rugger, this would be my inkling though that a lower tier side probably in the RFU Championship may give him a chance, things really didn't work out in Wales and Chauncey had a cup of coffee with Glasgow a little while back so I don't see a top tier side giving him a shot at the moment. A good June would help his case, a few other players have come back early for preparations I saw that Hotson had returned and was at the Centre of Excellence this week.

It was a tremendous achievement for Shawinigan Lake School.

Chauncey O'Toole sure does tease us with his potential. He was superb at the Churchill Cup the last couple of years. O'Toole was at openside before the return of Kleeberger. When Kleeberger returned he did outplay Chauncey. Did O'Toole move to 6 when Adam returned? Jebb Sinclair was playing back row last summer before Kleeberger returned.

I actually think O'Toole could find himself on the Bench

Sinclair was playing second row with Cudmore; however, with Sinclair emerging as a specialist no 8 at London Irish and now for the Stormers in the Super 15 how can you not play him there.

I see our pack looking like this:

1 Hubert Buydens
2 Ryan Hamilton
3 Jason Marshall
4 Tyler Hotson
5 Jamie Cudmore (hopefully)
6 Adam Kleeberger
7 Aaron Carpenter
8 Jebb Sinclair

Aaron Carpenter won player of the year at Plymouth and he is a quality player I would move Sinclair to 8 but keep him at flanker. O'Toole is going to need to play some half decent rugby and earn his spot, tell you the truth I always thought he was over-hyped compared to some of our other guys we have playing.

I really like Hotson starting as well, he was quality at the RWC and has also shone through at Plymouth Albion, I guess alot depends on Cudmore's availability.
