Jeez they made 320 against Aussie chasing ffs and we're useless? But then again South Auckland aint a cricket stronghold.

Clarke hits the stumps far too many times for it ever to be called a fluke, more like a freak! [/b]

um last year in melbourn chappel haddlees series 1 nz won that one and that was pretty close. I can get revenge on blic if i play it and I have rl 2 to keep me occupied until game 3
Hehe but you can't argue with 1 from the last 16 for aussie... we just don't win them!

I guarantee no-one expected them to get anywhere near 300 let alone 323 so they did bloody well... and almost claimed the highest scoring win in ODI history (I think?)

We got the third biggest total without winning.

I find it hard to be critical of NZ, they did bloody well. Imagine if they hadn't been runout, but instead didn't take the runs. Then we could be critical.

that was a beautiful last over bowled by lewis as well there simply was nothing to smash at all he was right on the money. unfortunate nz couldn't pull off the win after coming so close

i cant say i watch alot of cricket - but when brent lee gets in some pressure, does he always throw beamers? it seems pritty cheap if you ask me...

yeah its his way of letting his anger go. that game really did it for him as he had gone back to aus with some sort of breathing problem. io its because he got smacked so badly and how has physlogical damage to his ego etc. bad news for nz with bond still not being back and fleming may not play either.

Fleming to play on Saturday
09 December 2005
By JONATHAN MILLMOW

There was good news and bad news for the New Zealand cricket team yesterday.

The good - captain Stephen Fleming is a probable starter for the final one-day match against Australia in Christchurch tomorrow - the bad - Shane Bond remains sidelined with his hamstring strain.

New Zealand coach John Bracewell declined to confirm Fleming's involvement but the sight of the captain's heavily pregnant partner, Kelly Payne, arriving in Christchurch on the same aircraft as the team was as strong a hint as required.

Fleming has spent the past four days playing for Wellington against Canterbury and Bracewell went straight from the airport to QEII Village Green to get the low down on his skipper's condition following recent facial surgery.

Fleming may be needed anyway with Lou Vincent struggling with deep bruising after being struck on the right thigh by Brett Lee in Wellington.

Bracewell put on a brave front yesterday, claiming cricket was the winner in Wellington, an attitude that caused more than a few raised eyebrows given his fiercely competitive instincts.

"It's an entertainment business and you can't get better than that," Bracewell said.

"While you don't like to be on the wrong end of it, you've got to recognise that it was a great game of cricket. I think we've made a lot of progress as a unit. We were missing two of our star players. Each batter looked independently at what they had to do to try and win the game.

"To get confronted with such a score, it was a magnificent achievement the way they organised themselves to be competitive."

Needless to say the players will have taken considerable heart and belief from their moral victory. Given no hope, they rattled the world champions who were forced to draw on all their gamesmanship and more to win by two runs.

It was a performance to win over cricket fans and a reminder of what this team is capable of when it all comes together.

The challenge now for Bracewell and his troops is to start winning games that go down to the wire and to fix up their death bowling which bordered on incompetent.

Bracewell claimed it was about getting a "flow on" in tight finishes, something New Zealand didn't manage in South Africa or in the one-day match against Australia at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington last summer.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThere were no excuses for the death bowling, where Kyle Mills and Chris Cairns conceded 61 runs between overs 47-49.

"It's a little bit hard to measure because I think there was an outstanding innings by (Andrew) Symonds."

With the series in the bag Australia have released Lee to return home for nasal surgery and replaced him in the squad with Queensland left-armer Mitchell Johnson.

Bracewell wouldn't be drawn on Lee's beamer at Brendon McCullum on Wednesday night. Last summer, however, he suggested that Lee had deliberately beamed McCullum in a match in Auckland.

"I commented last year and I'm not commenting this year."[/b]

Black Caps go out for one last battle
10 December 2005
By GEOFF LONGLEY

Dead Chappell-Hadlee match it may be at Jade Stadium today but if New Zealand loses to Australia it will be its longest losing streak at home in limited-over history.

So far the Black Caps have been beaten in seven successive matches at home â€" all by world No. 1 Australia â€" equalling their previous worst home record between 1986 and 1988.

But Wednesday's rousing run chase in Wellington showed the Black Caps can be competitive, and with Brett Lee missing and Stephen Fleming returning, those factors count in New Zealand's favour.

Allied to that, Australia will field one of the most inexperienced bowling line-ups in its limited-over history, with Nathan Bracken 22 (games) leading the new-ball attack alongside Mick Lewis (one game), Stuart Clark (three games), Cameron White (four games) and Andrew Symonds the specialist bowlers.

Left-arm spinner Brad Hogg (70 games) has been omitted from the 12-man squad, leaving debutant Mitchell Johnson as the super sub and likely to bowl, according to Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Johnson, a left-arm pace bowler in the Bracken mould, arrived at 2am yesterday from Brisbane and trained with the team. He could play a big role if New Zealand opted to bowl first, as it had always wanted to do in its past few games.

However, Lewis proved when he delivered a superb final over in Wellington, full and straight, that vastly-experienced state cricketers in Australia are not fazed by such high-pressure situations.

Fleming will open the batting, with Lou Vincent going back to No. 3, but Daniel Vettori retains the captaincy to complete the series as Fleming eases back.

Vincent faces a fitness test today on the thigh that was badly bruised when batting on Wednesday in Wellington and he will be replaced by James Marshall if unfit.

Pace bowler Chris Martin has been called into the 12, replacing James Franklin who has struggled to contain the Australian batsmen.

It appears that New Zealand will seek to bowl first and use Martin then substitute him with a batsman, either with Hamish Marshall or Craig McMillan â€" although they have both been short of runs â€" when they bat.

Vettori believes Fleming's presence will help lift the side, and Fleming is comfortable to take his fielding orders from the left-arm spinner.

AdvertisementAdvertisement"The decision to have Dan captain in this next game is great. The development of Dan through the series whenever we've been on tour has been paramount for the succession of this team," Fleming said.

"While it might be seen as a bit unusual, I think it's fantastic in terms of my re-introduction to international cricket and Dan's continuity in this series.

"I think he's done a great job under pressure as we knew he would do. I just think it made sense for him to continue."

Vettori welcomed the presence Fleming brings to the team.

"Just Flem being around will have a massive influence on the side. It's really good to see him back," he said.

"After the performance in the last game the guys are still on a little bit of a high. Any win against Australia is important and we've had a run of losses against them, so the guys are still pretty motivated to get something out of this series and continue on heading towards Sri Lanka."

Fleming said he was not a great cricket watcher but he was glued to the latter stages of the enthralling Black Caps fightback in Wellington.

"That second innings was something special and it was disappointing not to get across the line. I think we've had four or five games in recent times that have been very close and this was another one," he said.

Fleming said he had no net practice before his first innings of 62 for Wellington against Canterbury.

"I'll be nervous getting back out there," he said.

Ponting felt New Zealand just needed a little luck to rediscover its winning ways.

"They did everything right, there wasn't much more they could have done differently," Ponting said.

"Michael Clarke's bit of fielding was the difference, there's no doubt about that," said Ponting of Clarke's spectacular long-range run-out of Brendon McCullum.

"If he had missed the stumps I would have been probably forced to bring the whole field up."

The Jade Stadium pitch has a good, even grass cover and invariably plays well. Australia has amassed over 300 runs the last two times it batted there.[/b]

Fleming opening vincent 3 vettori captain, interesteting stuff.

what about the return of martin. when was the last time he played for the blacks in an odi must have been ages ago. it is bit werid as i was talking to my friends earlier this week about our bowling attack and i said that chris martin couldn't control the ball and look now he is back in the team lol. interesting move with vettori keeping the captainacy even with fleming back. vincent at 3 also interesting but not unexcpted as he was in good touch on wednesday and if he fires again could get nz off to a flier. hope full the black caps can pull off a win

New Zealand are poor, but that's not taking away anything from Hussey. Superb innings, we have found our knew Bevan. This guy is sitting on an average of about 150 runs in like 23 games. Outstanding.

some shots were good but lets face it he was getting bowled meat pies. hopefully fleming pulls off something special and astle and vincent go nuts again. i thought nz were gone in wellington but they almost stole the game so maybe something similar can be done again.

black caps pull off a miracle and win breaking the world record for the highest chase in one day cricket with an over to spare. still dissappointing to lose the series but at least we got one over the aussies

When Oram and Styris went out, I was sure that we were done for. Actually, I thought we were done for after Cairns went out (and there had been the loss of McMillian just before). Can't believe they pulled it off.

what a game....Nz pulled off the greatest run chase of time

Great knock by Styris
How big was the 6 by Oram jeez....a moonshot
How good is McCullum

on a sour note.....surely that is Mcmillan last game for the blackcaps
