The Chiefs have signed two new forwards for the 2014 season with Canterbury lock Matt Symons and Tasman loose forward Liam Squire joining the defending Super Rugby champions. Both players had impressive form and work rate in their respective ITM Cup campaigns, Chiefs Assistant Coach Tom Coventry said.
"The appealing aspect of both of these players is that they are highly ambitious and keen to grow their games in the Chiefs culture which is exciting for all parties involved," said Coventry.
"Matt has taken the opportunity to secure a starting position in ITM Cup and in doing so has been a stand out player for us."
Twenty-four year old Symons has been a strong performer for Canterbury this season having made the move from England, where he played for Esher and was a former British rower. At two metres tall and 117kg, Symons has proven to be highly mobile with strong aerial ability.
At 112kg and 196cm tall Liam Squire's athletic style has caught the eye of several Super Rugby franchises but Squire selected the Chiefs.
"Liam works hard around the field and also offers us another line-out option," said Coventry.
Both players will move to Hamilton late November.

Symons fits the bill as a (reasonably) young lock, who can fill the lock position on the bench (initially, at least - he could well be a better long term option than Fitzgerald). He's a very good pick up, given how well he's played for Canterbury this season. Squire I haven't seen at all, so can't comment on. Obviously the Chiefs coaches rate him highly, he sounds like a very dedicated bloke, given the raft of injuries he's faced.

Both players have been signed for just one season, currently.
