Hi all, what Do you think would be the best coaching trio - head plus two assistants - for the all blacks next year? Accounting for what coaches may be available.

    Some Options(head coach listed first)

    1. Robertson, Joseph, foster. Robertson for his attitude. Joseph for his experience as he’s coached losing teams then transformed them to champions. He’s also coached japan and no Maori against international opposition. Foster to carry the current ip through. I’d also have brown in the mix as an attack coach or something. I’d wonder if foster didn’t get head coach he might try overseas. Actually, how does it work? Who appoints the assistant coaches? I’m assuming someone can choose them all but I guess sometimes the head coach picks their assistants?

    2. Rennie, mauger, Joseph . Rennie consistently good while still being expansive. Mauger to bring some new ideas.

    3. Garland, foster, Mauger. Gatland very experienced, clinical, brings a defensive edge.

    4. Foster, Rennie, Robertson. All used to winning. Continues the Henry Hansen styles but adds some enthusiasm and positive play.

    5. Rennie, brown, foster.

    6. Gatland, Robertson, brown

    7. Robertson, cotter, foster

    Etc

I think Gatland and Robertson could be a good dynamic, not sure who you would get for a defence coach though.

And even though Schmidt has ruled himself out of any job post-World Cup I’m still not totally convinced that he is fully out of the running either.

Yeah I thought gatland and Robertson could work well together. Regarding defence coach, all coaches have been everything coaches and you have to wonder if the likes of gatland or Rennie who have worked with great defence specialists couldn’t bring their learnings across. I’ve been finding it hard to google the differ t roles different coaches have played, unfortunately. I know all blacks coaches in the past have rotated their roles around.

Any ideas on a defence coach?

Scott McLeod is probably the top contender for a defence role, but probably won’t be called “assistant coach”, just “defence coach”. In which case maybe , as is the case now, you just have one assistant, and one “defence coach”.

Let’s get them all in the mix. Gatland, Robertson, McLeod, Mauger, etc . Actually McLeod might be the guy that can take a bit , ,only a bit, of the old ip across to the new coaching group. I reckon the four I’ve listed above is feasible, they’d probably all say yes to those roles with the money available, they won’t need a lot to be a part of coaching the all blacks.

The next best defence option is probably Plumtree, but I’m not sure he is good enough. Gatland or Rennie could probably do better. Even better would be having one of Rennie and gatland in the head or assistant role with McLeod as specialist for defence.

Although I had read Shaun Edwards has signed a 4 year deal with France, there are still rumours that that deal isn’t complete. So he’d obviously be the favourite to accompany Gats (if indeed Gats got the nod... & Edwards were still free). Apart from that no... I was going through the same thought pattern when Pivac was going to announce his coaching team for Wales.

As Edwards and Farrell have done such good jobs, I reckon another convert from League wouldn’t be a bad shout... not sure who though.

That could be nice, but I don’t know that a non New Zealander coaching the all blacks would fly.

Chris Boyd could be another guy, not a defence coach, that could play an assistant role. E.g. gatland, Boyd, McLeod

You're probably right there... any great cross-code NZer’s (apart from Sonny Bill) who has coaching experience?

Nope. Brad thorn, who is enough of a New Zealander, is coaching rugby in Australia- the reds. Don’t think he is defence coach though and He hasn’t coached in league.

Thank you for telling about this update. Coaches play an important role whenever they (players) face any problem in a game. You have to work hard from the heart.

As much as i hate to suggest it because i want them all back in Dunners but surely an existing team (previously)

Joseph, Brown and Mcleod (Head, Attack and Defense) too many of the combos listed involve existing head coaches having to accept just being a member of a team or becoming an assistant, im sure they would work it out eventually i can see some teething problems

I have been toying that one around in my mind too. I like that as a group they went from very poor (in terms of results) but promising and then adapted and refined to the point where they won the comp.

If you look at Rennie, the chiefs were there or thereabouts for his entire tenure. So it’s a different story there, a story of consistently good. Is that better than Joseph and co? Or is it better to show you can adapt? You could also say Rennie reached his peak right at the start of his tenure and then rested on his laurels. Obviously losing Wayne Smith toward the end made a big difference.

What do you think about bringing some ip from the current regime? There has to be a lot of that. McLeod could bring some. The more I think about it the more I think McLeod should be defence coach.

In terms of senior coaches not wanting to play second fiddle I think Robertson wouldn’t mind. I also think Rennie wouldn’t mind if he was second to gatland, just because I think Rennie would respect garlands experience.

Sadly I think the ship has sailed as far as Gatland goes... he’s officially down to HC the Lions in 2021, so that probably puts an end to it. Gutted as I think he would’ve loved nothing more than to coach his nation but I take it that his nation (generally speaking) doesn’t feel the same way.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that contract could be broken. Nor would I be surprised if gatland will come and coach in nz domestically, plus the lions, and Ian foster will get a short contract as all blacks coach which will then be up for review in 2021 after the lions

Well, Gats has conclusively ruled himself out of taking over England and France has voted against having a foreign coach... so ‘maybe’ the Lions job is just a smokescreen.

He might be able to do both. I mean apparently he could coach wales and the lions in 2017. It would be a great opportunity for his assistants to step up for the all blacks while he is on lions duties.

Maybe, for some reason I didn’t think the NZRU would be so open to that.

No one would want that, lions admitting they need the ABs coach to win?

Gatland, Schmidt, Edwards. A new style of play to look forward to.
Stop playing the fancy stuff and start grinding out wins. Be the best defensive side in the world.
