Hi guys, I've been a follower of rugby and it's games for quite a while now. I've played almost all of the rugby games starting from Rugby 06 onwards and IMO haven't played one that has included some of the intricies of rugby. So I've come up with some controls of my own. Feel free to tell me what you think about them.

Attack: Left analog stick to run, further you push the stick faster your player runs.
L3: Lowers body position
Right analog stick: Pass, push in direction you want to pass, the harder you push the faster the pass, the further you push the longer. Dummy by pushing in the direction you want to dummy and then returning stick to the middle.
R2/L2: Step left/right. harder you push the further he steps
R1/L1: Fend right/left
D-Pad: Left,Up,Down=Set Plays Right=Set kicker

Kicking in play:
To kick a punt or bomb press X to enter kick mode. Once you've entered kick mode you've got as long as the it takes for the defence to reach you to kick it. Once you've entered kick mode you use R1/L1 for height (If you want to kick of your right foot use R1 vice versa if you want to kick of the left foot, you can kick off any foot with any player but obviously their going to be stronger on their dominant foot which will be indicated when you enter kick mode) L2/R2 for length. Once you've picked the length you then press X to drop the ball and as the ball drops you use Right/Left analogue stick (depends what foot) to swing you leg and kick it. The swing would be similar to the swing on golf games. The timing of your swing affects distance and height. To drop kick, press Circle then press X to drop the ball and then as the as the ball hits the ground swing with whatever stick your kicking off. The harder you swing the further it's going to go but accuracy will be. A tap of square will chip while if you hold it you be able to grubber. Grubber kicking works the same as drop goals in the sense you don't use distance or height buttons, you just press X and swing your foot. Triangle exits kick mode.

Goal Kicking: To goal kick you start your run up by pressing X, then once your near the tee you press X to plant your (non-kicking) foot and swing (kicking foot) with the Left/Right analogue stick.

Breakdown: First you put players into the breakdown by pressing Circle. Once they're in the ruck you can scroll and select them by pressing L1/R1. You can also select players outside the ruck to organise your defence for the next phase. Once you've selected a player you can order them to perform an action
Triangle= Play at ball
X= Pilfer
Square= Remove player
Use the left stick for direction of pilfer, and move players outside the ruck.

Defence:

R2/L2: Tackle low on the left/right
R1/L1 Tackle high on the left/right
Left analog stick: Move player, same system as running
L3: Dive
X: Try and hold the player so he can't release or get to ground, press X to release if player is successful in getting to ground
Sqaure: Power tackle
Circle: Strip
D-Pad: Pick depth, width and any custom defence you've made

Scrum: When scrimmaging you use the analog sticks to push in the direction you want with your props but any movement with you make with your props has to balanced out with the locks if you don't the scrum will collapse. When wheeling you must still use your props. So if wheeling left, push with right prop and pull back with left prop
X: Engage
L1/R1: Move N4 lock left/right
L2/R2: Move N5 lock left/right
Right analog stick: Move prop on the right
Left analog stick: Move prop on the left
Square: Wheel left
Circle: Wheel right

Lineouts: To throw lineouts pull back on the left analog stick, you can then move your jumpers around using by selecting them with the face buttons and pushing the right analog stick up and down and then to make them jump press the button you used to select them again. You can use decoy jumpers. To throw pull back on the left analog stick then push up. The harder you push up the harder he throws. You can also throw to the sides by pushing stick up in the direction you want to throw it.
X, Circle, Square, Triangle: Select Jumper press again to jump
Right analog stick move jumpers
Left analog throw lineout
Circle: Throw back once caught
Square: Maul:
X: Go to ground

Maul: X add players
Circle: Hold in circle to select players to form a breakaway. You then use the R1 button to scroll through and pick players. L1 removes them from the breakaway. Once you think your ready let go off circle to breakaway.
Left analog stick: Control player on left
Right analog stick: control players on right

When defending a maul same controls apply though instead of using R1 and L1 to select players for a breakaway you use them to scroll through your players in the maul, once you've selected a player he can try and pull down the maul using square, hold up the ball players using X.

how many people on this forum have actually read the original post ?

Seeing as it takes roughly 6 months to get through it not many I'm guessing :p

I like the idea of passing using the right stick, but I don't know whether it'd work in reality, seeing as you can't pass forward in the game, and half of the stick's controls would result in a scrum against you. However, the thought of adding more skill to the passing is a nice idea.

These controls are obviously just a wild dream and I'm not sure how many of them would work, especially the breakdown and maul ones but I'm pretty happy with passing. A skill is to be able to throw a border line forward pass so I personally think they would be quite challenging.
