Dan Carter Signs for Perpignan

Will his skills be fully utilised in a predominantly 10 man game?[/b]
That because he's going to be in the North, eh? Don't worry, those marvelous ELVs will soon sort that out...

Daniel Carter has signed for Perpignan for a six month stint next year. Will his skills be fully utilised in a predominantly 10 man game?

Will your dentist's re-construction skills be fully utilised in the predominantly poor situation your teeth will be in if you ever suggest to a Frenchman that his game consists of ten men?

I think not, you don't have socialised medical care down there, do you?

Perpignan? o_O Surely he could have done better than that? Didn't better teams want him?

I thought better teams would have gone in for him!

Toulon was my number 1 destenation for Carter!

He didn't go to Toulon because Adidas kicked up a fuss regarding their Puma kits. A similar story to the Ronaldo/Nike story of the 1998 poofball world cup.

Perpingnan have puma shirts.

probably but I think he wants to be out of the media spotlight at least when he can and that is why I think he was always looking at france to play. Also perpignan seem to be offering some big coin probably even bigger than what the uk clubs could match. and finally surely the weather in france would be a bit better than most of the Uk clubs and more desirable for six odd months to play rugby in.

Nooooooooo stop to flee south (though in this case I believe that it is temporary)

same situation as perpignan with regards to puma kits but apparently adidas have given the all clear for carter to play for them despite this.

edit saw this posted in the carter+evans thread in the southern hemisphere forum

Meanwhile, Greg Bramwell, the managing director of the All Blacks apparel sponsor adidas, said there were no contractual problems despite Carter being aligned to the brand - while Perpignan wear Puma.

Hey, well, both Matfield and Anton Oliver have said its a much more forward dominated game and last time i checked they actually played in the french league.

ps. SA's probably far more socialist than you think. ANC(<strike>African National Congress</strike> Awfully Negligent Communists)

Yeh, fair point. 6 months isn't much to invest 200k on a player really. I suppose he went for the lifestyle and conditions.

Don't forget that the UK clubs (Premiership at least) have a wage cap of something like £3.6m for the whole squad over a season which doesn't apply in France. 200-600k is a huge chunk to take out of that for a part time/short term player which otherwise could be used in squad strengthening. Many coaches and chairmen of the English clubs would have decided that would have been a better option I would imagine.

I'm not sure if such a salary cap applies to the Celtic franchises however.

I have to say KN Shark was spot on. Perpignan are known for their massive pack and their limited game plan, which I hope DC is aware of. <_<

Its a real stretch to say that he will be playing 10 man rugby because he is going to the NH. The 10 man game is played mainly on the other side of the Channel. Perpignan are a pretty good side, and made the Top 14 semis this year. I have watched quite a bit of it on the Rugby Channel this year. They play a style similar to the Crusaders, so he should fit in well.

Perpignan will be involved in the Heineken Cup in 2008/09. That fact would have been key in DC's decision to go there, and is probably why we have not heard which club he was going to until now.

Yeah the Ospreys did. :p Now we just get to watch him beat us on his own down the Liberty in the H Cup!!
I'm sure we could have afforded him though. Alan Gaffney (Saracen's coach and father of Dean) said he knew what Marty Holah was worth on the market and couldn't believe we had the money for him.

Well if his arrival is set on december Perpignan could already be eliminated of the H-Cup at this time. In fact, in a pool with Leicester and Ospreys, I should say that this is highly probable.

Plus Carter is expected to be back in New Zealand for the firsts summer test, who takes place at the same time of the Top 14 semi final, I heard that this is stipulated in his contract. So if Perpignan is in the Top 4 once again, he will let them alone for the playoffs.

Surely a nice catch... as useful as Montgomery this year.
