I've been thinking about this for a while, has anyone seen a kicker deliberately miss a shot at goal maybe aiming for the far corner so that it could be regathered and a tried scored?

the ball is still in play is it not? nothing illegal about it is there?

Interesting, I can't see any reason why this wouldn't be allowed. Would certainly catch the opposition out, however teams are normally ready if the ball hits the upright etc., so you'd probably just be handing the ball to the opposition in reality.

In the EA rugby games if you have a penalty ALWAYS go for a kick at goal. The further from the posts you are the better. The opposition defense always stands behind their goal line so if you kick the ball an inch open play resumes and you can gather the ball and peg it up the pitch and gain serious yards before the opposition make it to you to defend.

if definately wouldn't come off everytime or anything but you know the story, five mins to go, ten down (two scores) and a try would change the game...you get a penalty on half way but out on the touch line..have a crack!

BUT, on the other touch you have a Habana/Roko type person (dont need to be big, pace is the key, maybe with a jump) just "hanging out"..the opposition is waiting for a rebound or for it to fall short under the posts.....not to fly high and wide out to the far touchline

would love to see someone pull it off or even just try!

This is one that comes up frequently on RugbyRefs.com, usually raised by a new ELRA referee or a newby club ref.

Most referees I know won't allow it, as it is considered outside the spirit of the game..

LAW 10.4(m)
(m) Acts contrary to good sportsmanship. A player must
not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship in the
playing enclosure.

Sanction: Penalty kick

Different if the kicker was making a genuine attempt at goal, and the wind swung it wildly away from the posts, or it struck the posts and bounced away to the side. However, if the kicker deliberately kicks the ball to the corner after he has told me he is kicking for the posts, I'm going to ping him.

I believe Worcester scored a try against Wasps last season when the ball was hit wide and dived on by Gear.

But was it just a fair shot at goal that missed and was followed up well, or was is deliberately kicked "wide" (as in way out in the corner like Jabby is suggesting), i.e., a planned move with no intention of scoring a penalty goal.

If it was the former, no problem. Not so for the latter.

It was kicked from the left and pushed past the right hand post - Who's to say it wasn't a legit kick at goal, even if it was deliberate?

Another one of those grey-areas in the law book.

Having just seen the video you posted next, I have to agree.

The kick certainly looked normal. Still, I find it hard to believe that it was a planned move at 17-15 up 10 min into the second half. Risky if it was. The Brive player only had to catch and ground the ball (instead of turning his back on it

) and the try wouldn't have been scored.

I think it would be very hard for the ref to tell if it was a deliberate plan, but it would probably be even harder to get it right. Most of the time you'd just end up giving the ball away and would be relying on the other side making an error.

it would be hard to prove it was a deilerate miss, maybe on a perfectly still day and you missed by miles but a windy day that has not been taken into consideration?

I see what you're saying though smartcooky, it would be a big call to say "i dont think you were really trying" but if its obvious, ten guys all out on the wing etc then fair call to bring them back

I've just nver seen it and those "spirit of the game" kind of rules can be subjective

...just watched the video, i thinkits pretty obvious that having the oposition turn their back was part of the move.....;)

that looked like a legit shot at goal to me and the bounce was just as much a factor which can NEVER be banked on
