England 2024/25

Didn’t see that coming from Willis. Must’ve had good personal reasons but also worrying that a central contract and a likely starting shirt wasn’t enough of a pull. Not even going to join his brother.

CCS got the better of Willis last week. Give him the autumn at 8 and see what he can do.

I think that should be the call.

I do wonder why he did this. Obviously money but I might get heat for this, I know France does offer good money I know hes been very good this past year but is he that great of a player to command that mega high salary? Im sure it was very good but not sure its gonna be that much better then Sarries+central contract and England appearance fees. Im sure the money is more but is it worth more then a World Cup. Makes me this what else other then money, he's very close with his bro the way England treated Jack. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall he knows Borthwich loves Earl, CCS and Pollock, thought he'll lose his place regardless. Imo it was Toms 8 shirt to lose but you know how players think.

Forget the RFU and Borthwick … I'm livid. Shocking betrayal.
I'm gutted not livid tbf, he has the opportunity to not only made good money playing for England but I think be an England great, on the other hand if they have offered a boat load of cash then in a short career that 1 injury could end he needs to make the most of it.

I wonder if Pollock will be fast tracked as an 8? Massively different type but if not who's going to fill it?

If he wants to go like for like Barebary has to be the option but he's not been picked. My guess Earl back to 8 but I'd love CCS to have a shot. Pollock can stay on the bench for a year.

Pre Tom Willis

1. Genge (Baxter, Opoku-Fordjour)
2. Cowan-Dickie (George, Dan, Blamire, Jibulu)
3. Stuart (Heyes, Fasogbon)
4 and 5 Itoje and Chessum (Coles)
6. T Curry (Pollock)
7. Pepper
8. Earl (T Wills, Cunningham-South)
9. Mitchell (Van Poortvliet, Spencer)
10. Ford ( F Smith, M Smith)
11. Feyi-Waboso (Arundell, Radwan)
12. Ojomah (Dingwall)
13. Lawrence (Slade, Freeman)
14. Freeman (Roebuck)
15. Steward (M Smith)

Having CCS at 8 gives Earl more freedom to be a centre as well!!!!!

I'm not sure England treated Jack badly in any way TBH. Arguably he deserved to be picked more than he was but a lot of this was also down to injuries at the wrong time and being in a position with genuinely top class competition (Curry, Underhill, Lawes (pre-retirement) etc).

I understand his decision making more because he was always facing serious competition to start. Tom's situation was totally different - it's not a stretch to say he was on the way to establishing himself as a guaranteed starter in a position with much less competition.

Yeah. CCS is probably the closest we have to a like for like replacement.

It does upset the apparent plan for the 6:2 bench but maybe that opens the door for Ted Hill to be the lock/flanker hybrid.

They didn't destroy the premiership for him therefore they've treated him horrendously
Ahhh. The usual self-entitelement of a player taking themselves out of contention, but thinking that they're an "exceptional circumstance" because their ego says so.

Or "The Steffon Gambit" as it's known.

You'd think that a full 15 years, without ever being invoked would make people rethink their ego.
Apparently not.

We didn't make an exception for fringe international SArmitage, or established internationals DArmitage or Balshaw, or up-and-comer Mercer, or... anyone at all, ever.
The rule had been in place since Jacques was what? 15 years old? It cannot possibly have come as a surprise to him.

Wait, what?
Have I missed something?
How did England treat Jack badly?

Didn't they just not-select him when he made himself unavailable? I'm not aware of anything else.

I think the point was more about Jacques (nice one!) not being selected when he was available and the uncertainties that brings. OK that was pre central contracts and J had horrendous injuries, but the brothers are close and that’s almost certainly given T a different outlook.

Since J went to France everything I’ve read from him has been very sensible and fully accepting of his situation. While he’d love to be playing for England he seems to be thriving on and off the pitch and repaying the faith Toulouse showed in him (and doubtless getting paid well too).

Well that's a kick in the teeth. I would take him out immediately...even though he'll still be getting paid. Can that be removed? Contract stipulations?

CCS is the obvious replacement.

I fail to see that he can be getting much more unless Bordeaux have made him one of the highest players in the world. The central contact with England + appearance fees is worth over 200k
Can't see any England player at Sarries not earning at least 300-400k with bonus per annum
It makes no sense to turn your back on something that should be the pinnacle of your sport when you are first choice.
