English rugby plots revolutionary changes to expand new ‘franchise-style’ Premiership

Would be a shame, but radical change is necessary.
So true and current dissenters have to realise this.
Change or die
We have tried to follow the football model, without, the level of investor or the level support.
The whole pyramid structure is leading to sugar daddies funding lower tier teams to move up.

Won't it be a case of Leicester Tigers etc sharing match day revenue, merch sales going to supporting teams with half the attendances / base. With the bigger well run teams proping up the rest any way.

Tbh I think it might have to be or you'll just have a few teams left any way.

Exactly.
The football model is failing rugby in this country.
We can see it in football itself, there are already 3 tiers in the premiership and normally the 3 promoted teams get relegated.
In rugby, the race to the top is about the deepest pockets and not about on field performance.
If it stays the same we will be down to 5 or 6 teams within 5-10 years.

There's a good chance we'll see a few drop out from this too. I'm not convinced there's this influx of money going to come knocking with this idea. I do agree a change is needed and I'm glad they're looking, but it will come with some pain I think.

obviously don't love it but if done correctly it could work. but that is a big if.

Issue with English rugby is that it compares itself to the NFL and the premier league when it really should try to be its best self. Which is probably a slightly more competitive Bundesliga. Extremely top heavy and rarely winning Europe; but everyone seems to have a good time. Plus the hipsters love it.

There's been the usual push back around this while failing to acknowledge that it has essentially been a ringfenced, franchise like competition for several seasons now.

There's also the fact that at least half of the current Chamiopnship sides have no interest in pushing for promotion to the Premiership. And there's nothing wrong with that. The Championship can still provide a place for competitive semi-pro Rugby.

I think such a move would allow for more strategic expansion. Certainly no worse than the status quo.

It be notable if this happens and then tons of the big names Players join that new travelling league and the whole game splits in two.

I've read the article and I'm still confused as to what the proposal actually is.

So we've got centralised kit deals and then no relegation (we we already have really), then the change for some other clubs to join the prem if they hit some different criteria (so we already have that just changing the critera), then talking a franchise model which with the current P shares, it already is a franchise model in that sense.

Just don't see how the above is going to crest any more investment. I hope I've missed something in there otherwise what's the golden egg?

At this stage I think it's more kinder egg than golden.

The devil will be in the details.

But they want to expand to 12 or 14 or maybe beyond. Whatever the structure that's pretty optimistic given the state of the finances of some of the current 10. Doesn't matter how you package it if fans aren't coming into stadia or buying the right TV packages / merch.
