Not seen this given much press, which is odd.

It has been announced today that Jerry Flannery will retire from professional rugby with immediate effect.
The 33 year old who has struggled with injury for the past two seasons, played his last competitive game in Ireland's World Cup defeat of the US Eagles at New Plymouth's Yarrow Stadium last September.

as a great player for Ireland and Munster, shame to see him have to bow out though it's not surprising considering how many injuries he's had in recent years.

Yeah, it's a shame that. In 2009 he should have been the Lions hooker had things gone his way. It's been on the cards for a good while now. Expect Shane Horgan to follow soon enough.

He decided this about 2 weeks ago. A shame as said but unfortunately he visited best specialist in world and while he got back sprinting etc the physicality aspect is just too much and well the risk of long term damage is very high.
Wish him all the best and don't worry about Fla he has plenty of business plans on the go and I think he will venture in to tv as analyst at times too

Such is the risk of modern rugby I guess. I was having a look through the England 03' winning team there the other day and it's remarkable the amount of them who either retired through injury or are facing long term health issues.

God, Flannery and Sheehan on the same punditry panel. Lord help us all.

Nah, he's been injured all season. It doesn't seem likely that he'll get back at this stage though. :(

Classic moment that. Really is a shame. I think he's comfortably the best Irish Hooker in the last 12 years or so, or since Keith Wood was on his final legs...or neck muscles or whatever was wrong with him.

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure he was asthmatic and forgot to put it down on his form for the drugs commissioner so he got banned.

Yeah, basically. From what I remember Munster Rugby + Frankie Sheehan were properly lazy/negligent with the forms which is why the ERC got so pissy. They reduced it from two years to three months when they realised that it really was just inhaler stuff and the high levels that they recorded in his blood after the Tolouse game was because he was badly dehydrated.

Regards Frankie: It wasn't Munster's fault but the anti-doping agency for the mix up hence why it was a huge reduction. Would've been 9 months if Munster were solely to blame. Yes Munster did leave out a section on the form bu let's also remember it was a shoulder injury that forced Frankie to retire.
