Two previous Bok Captains, Wynand Claassen and Divan Serfontein, have started a petition from ex-Boks to have Heineke Meyer kicked out. Quite rightly, they ask the question: "What would the New Zealanders' reaction have been if they arrived home with a bronze medal and a loss to Japan? Would that have affected Steve Hansen's future?" Also, one win in eight or nine against the Blacks, does not cut it. The knives are out. 75% of a poll finds that Meyer should be replaced before midnight tonight. The whole story on News24 SA. Your comments to the questions please?

New Zealand went out in 2007 in the quarter finals, yet Graham Henry was kept as coach. Invalid argument I think.

These ex-Boks need to chill. Rugby has changed since they last played. I say give Heyneke a 2 year extension, but bring in new support personnel.

I agree. I also feel we need to blood in a broader squad, so a few fixtures against Japan, Fiji etc would be good e.g. as a warm up to the Rugby Championship.

Can we possibly have one thread for Springboks related discussions? We have at least three going now that contain HM speculation and discussion.

Two old farts trying to have some time in the sun.....both idiots.

Definitely with you on new support personnel. Also, 2 years would give enough time to see if Meyer could do better if not dealing with the types of injury lists he has for the last two years and if his new support add value and also hopefully alternative options turn up; can Johan Ackermann continue his upward curve? Might Eddie Jones be available and are those behind the times ready for a foreign Bok coach?

Wynand Claassen, sour grapes much that his son is now playing for the frenchies??

And Divan Serfontein was fired from Supersport as a commentator for his ultra-bias commentary...

Yeah, right, move on, nothing to see here...

Ultimately it comes down to me is - okay, you replace HM. Who do bring in? What other South African coach has achieved anything in Super Rugby? I can't see any candidate knocking on the door with HMs profile or list of accomplishments, so either SA selects an overseas based coach - or they go with the best man they have for the job...which is HM.

Exactly!

People are quick to call for someone's head, until they have to think of the replacement. And I think it would be a travesty if we appoint a coach who is not South African.

It's better to go with the devil you know, than the devil you don't know...

The other option is Frans Ludeke. 2 Super Rugby ***les and i don't know how many currie cup ***les.

Oh Please no! And This is from a Bulls fan. Not Frans. Plus, I think he's being lured to coach in Japan, maybe to even coach their Super Rugby team.

Personally, I don't want him to go right now, but if we were to for some reason looking for a new coach I wouldn't mind Gert Smal going for the position. He at least has some international experience working with the boks from 04-07 and the Irish from 08-13.

hmmm... Gert Smal and Allistair Coetzee didn't assist the Boks much with playing running rugby when they were Jake White's assistants. And isn't he still employed with another team??

Now that would be interesting. Getting the old coaching team back together. White, Smal, Coetzee and maybe Jones. lol

As far as I know he is currently still WP/Stormers director of rugby until the end of next year. As to under White's tenure, I don't really think it was his job to do that, surely the head coach would have the main say in style of rugby? And at the time, non-running rugby was winning rugby, and I am not going to complain about playing that style to win a rugby world cup.

While we have had Gert as a director we have definitely had an improvement in the great WP bureaucracy and instead of selling all of our young talent to the bulls we have been able to develop a lot of players through the system (although we let Pollard slip).

Its ridiculous that SARU and the provinces' administrators have us in the position we are in regarding coaching appointments. Only the Lions knew who their coach was until very recently. Surely you have continuity planning (or at the very least acknowledge that you might likely be in a position of needing a new coach/approach to take up post RWC) and back up plans should you lose a coach to a heart attack (highly likely with Meyer by the look of it)?

Why not a foreigner? Is keeping ti local really worth not having Eddie Jones et al as options? ITO of South Africans I know Ackermann still needs to prove himself and has stated as much himself but does anyone know what the stances are of the likes of Nick Mallett, Rassie Erasmus, Brendan Venter... who else?

It just shows what a shambles SARU really is. What are they doing there in Cape Town ?

Do you honestly think that our Government will let that happen? They are not interested in the best, they want to keep it local, and with our ever increasing unemployment figures, they will much rather employ a local than an international coach. Even if it's just to the media journos at bay...

I think its an obscene extrapolation linking 1 specialist employment position (not subject to government approval) with national unemployment figures. I just can't imagine you typing that with a straight face?

Its not as if we don't have a hisory of foreign coaching. Bafana Bafana is far and away our biggest sports team ITO following and:

-Jun 1992, Stanley Tshabalala
-Oct 1992, Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba (caretaker coach, one match)
-Dec 1992, Augusto Palacios
-Mar 1994, Clive Barker
-Jan 1998, Jomo Sono (interim)
-Mar 1998, Phillipe Troussier
-Oct 1998, Trott Moloto
-Oct 2000, Carlos Queiroz
-Mar 2002, Jomo Sono
-Aug 2002, Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba
-May 2003, Jomo Sono (caretaker coach, one match)
-Jul 2003, Kenneth Kubheka (caretaker, one match)
-Dec 2003, April 'Styles' Phumo
-Apr 2004, Stuart Baxter
-Dec 2005, Ted Dumitru
-May 2006, Pitso Mosimane (caretaker coach, seven matches)
-Feb 2007, Carlos Alberto Parreira
-May 2008, Joel Santana
-Oct 2009, Carlos Alberto Parreira
-Jul 2010, Pitso Mosimane
-Jun 2012, Steve Komphela (interim, two matches)
-Jun 2012, Gordon Igesund
-Jul 2014, Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba

True

But Bafana isn't under the spotlight so they can get away with it.

The Springboks are under a magnifying glass, and everybody is looking at the finest, most minute thing to criticize on. With the idea of transformation to happen in Rugby, I think that they won't employ an overseas coach, purely because no other international coach would want to pick a politically correct team, and have that extra pressure on them. It's unique to SA, and only Saffas know how to deal with this...
