Hey guys I took time out of rugby in the past 3 years or so and since trying to come back I been getting this problem with my legs. I can jog fine though.

Thing is whenever I go to sprint or during sprinting I get a sharp pain in the center of the back of my thigh/thighs. Think it's a hamstring problem, not sure though.

Whats the best way to prevent this? I really want to get back into rugby but this is preventing me. Love rugby :(

You need to get to the root of the problem. It could be that you have tight calves, tight back muscles, glutes etc Also if in the last 3 years you have not been sprinting, just jogging you are going to be more to injury. Wear skins or compression bandages on your thighs, that will help, if you get a minor tear do RICE, but the most important thing is warming up & stretching before and especially after. I use a fence for stretching my hamstrings, it's hard to cheat that way, there are also a few very good stretches for the glutes - google it. Also weight training will help strengthen weak muscles. But if you have this problem ongoing speak to an experienced and recommended sports physio - not just any old physio.

Thanks for the reply.

Been stretching my legs lately and been running 2 miles every other day and my legs are fine. Too scared to go back to training in case they go again. Guess my best bet is to do a few sprints and see what happens. Just need to get this sorted and I'll be ok then.

Yeah your hamstrings aren't really under load when you're jogging. If you're worried abut tearing them, get a neoprene strap from the chemist, it will feel uber tight, but gives a lot of support. You will probably need to tape it, so it doesn't slide down your leg. Warm up, stretch, jog, run at 50%, 75% and if you are feeling no pain sprint. As soon as you feel the slightest twinge, stop.

Neophrene strap? them white, elastic things?

Yeah I agree. Good advice there mate.

Hopefully I'll be back training soon.
