BERLIN (AP) -- International Olympic leaders selected golf and rugby Thursday for proposed inclusion in the 2016 Summer Games, rejecting bids from baseball, softball and three other sports.

The International Olympic Committee executive board narrowed the field to two from a list of seven, which also included squash, karate and roller sports....

Rugby, which was played in four different Olympics between 1900 and 1924 in the full 15-a-side format, proposes the 7-a-side version for both men and women. The International Rugby Board would scrap its Sevens World Cup to ensure the Olympics is the sport's top event.[/b]

Can't actually see why canning the World Cup would be a good idea as most sevens followers eye up Hong Kong as the mecca of the short form of the game. But good news still :bravo:

Rugby 7's vs. Golf, seems a pretty easy decision.

In other news Women's Boxing is in there too, Ireland will finally win a gold medal!

Go Rugby GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now lets force the Olympics to become an every year event so that everyone gets sick of it.

THanks Bernard Lapasset. More than 10 years he's been working on bringing back rugby to the olympics. This is going to do so much good to rugby in the world!!
And the Pacific Islands will get good chances of gold medals, which is awesome!!!!!!!!!

Aye Katie Taylor used to live round the corner from me. Absolute tank.

Can anyone else see All Blacks conviently joining the sevens team in 2016? There use to be alot of All Black quality players from 1994-2002, but when people such as Lomu and Cullen stopped playing 7's, it seemed to turn alot more amature, now I can't wait to see big names continuing to play 7's along side the less well known ones.

I can't wait to see a combined GB team, should be quality. Sort of the like the Lions of 7s

Oh christ, remember how xenophobic the celtic lot were when 15 playing positions were available... Maybe this isn't such a good idea...

Why would we be playing for you mite, we got our own team over here just fine. I wonder who the Nordies will decide to play for though.

Only Teh Mite could get away with that. Seriously, how quickly would i be banned if i called you a dumbf*** Mite?

Anywayz, Olympic sevens will be awesome, and there will be no scots in team GB.

I don't think 'Team GB' :)lol:) includes Northern Ireland look at that (just to confuse people feicarsinn)

I think people from NI can participate for either Republic of Ireland or Great Britain. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think they pick the team they want and then have to stick with it.

I also agree...a bit harsh words before. But c'est la vie, a lot of you are dumbf***s...hahaha just a wee joke.

It's gonna be awesome. I wonder who will select the players and everything. Will International XV players be selected or VII specialists who play the series ?

well it's obvious why canning the world cup is a good idea.

The world cup is, technically, the pinnacle achievement for a 7s team. There is no point in having it if there's an Olympic medal at stake, which would obviously be important.

It's like having major events outside the olympics in football, tennis and golf... oh wait. 3 f***ing pointless olympic sports right there.

Why did they choose to start with 7s ather than XVs? Is it because more nations play 7s and/or are more competitive in 7s? Did the IRB propose 7s becuase they thought it had a better shot to get in and then they would hope to build on that with XVs in the future? Or is it just too hard to have a XVs tournament in 2.5 weeks.

All of the Above.
7's Rugby is a more level playing field for what in standard rugby are referred to as the "minow nations," including America. An Olympic sport must have a truly global appeal, and if you've watched the IRB 7's Series recently it is definitely that.
Plus it takes over a month to do the RWC. There is no way to condence it plus be more inclusive in a few days (which is what any sport gets, not the full 3 weeks).
7's Rugby is perfect for the Olympics and I think everyone is seeing that.
