Cape Town - Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has named a group of players that will be attending the first planning camp in Pretoria next week.
This will be the first of three camps planned during the following two months of Vodacom Super Rugby, in preparation for the tour against England in June.

Players from the Lions and Cheetahs will attend this planning camp, from April 16-19. Both teams have a bye next weekend.

“I’ve been mindful of the fact that we won’t have a lot of time to prepare for England, but these sessions will greatly assist in getting the players ready for when we get together a week before the first Test,†said Meyer.

“The five Vodacom Super Rugby franchises have been very accommodating in assisting us with the release of players for the various planning sessions and walk through camps.

“We’ve planned these camps in accordance with their bye weekends during Vodacom Super Rugby and I’ve given the franchises the assurance that there won’t be any intense field training during our sessions - it will be mostly theoretical planning sessions as well as walk through sessions of our planned plays.â€

The second planning camp, from April 23-26 in Pretoria, will feature players from the Bulls and the Sharks, while the third camp will take place in Cape Town with Stormers players from May 1-3.

“I’m planning to look quite wide at most of the eligible players from our five Vodacom Super Rugby squads when I invite players to attend our sessions - including currently injured players. The more players that are aware of how we’d like to play this year, the better for the Springboks’ preparations for a very tough season,†said Meyer.

Players invited to the first Springbok planning camp:

Forwards:

Coenie Oosthuizen, Caylib Oosthuizen, Pat Cilliers, CJ van der Linde, WP Nel, Adriaan Strauss, Bandise Maku, Callie Visagie, Izak van der Westhuizen, Davon Raubenheimer, Franco van der Merwe, Heinrich Brüssow, Derick Minnie, Pieter Labuschagne, Ashley Johnson, Juan Smith, Josh Strauss, Philip van der Walt

Backs:

Piet van Zyl, Michael Bondesio, Johan Goosen, Elton Jantjies, Butch James, Willie le Roux, Andries Strauss, Doppies La Grange, Robert Ebersohn, Alwyn Hollenbach, Lionel Mapoe, Jaco Taute, Hennie Daniller

can't disagree with these guys, but that being said, these are the 2 bottom log teams in our conference so I won't be reading too much into it...

I'd be surprised if more than 4/5 of these guys make it into a final 30 man squad. That said, I can't think of a player in these two teams that isn't named that i'd want to see in a Bok squad so in that case so far so good I guess. Sarel Pretorius must be kicking himself on the bench for the Waratahs.

Sias Ebersoh probably the most unlucky but with Goosen, Jantjies and Butch there and Sias having had only 80min this season one can't complain.

butch james sucks donkey balls.

And now he's retired.

That'd be like Carl Hayman saying he's going to retire from international rugby - he was never going to get picked anyway, with Steyn, Goosen, Grant, Jantjies all ahead of them (plus some!).

Pretoria - Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says he is stunned by the attitude of the players after the first four-day Springbok Planning Camp in Pretoria.

A group of 30 players from the Cheetahs and the Lions assembled this week as part of preparations of the incoming tour against England in June.

The camps, planned in accordance with the franchises' bye weekends during the Super Rugby competition, focused on theoretical planning and a few field sessions.

"I am overwhelmed. I had expectations of the week, and I was excited going into this week," Meyer said.

"I was overwhelmed by the attitude of these players. It is unbelievable and you can't believe they are in the middle of Super Rugby, and played seven or eight hard games and a few warm-up games."

Meyer said he found the enthusiasm of the players encouraging and he was focusing on their positive attitudes rather than their reputations.

"Sometimes you don't go with the big names and the best players because what matters to me is the attitude, and the guys who really want to play for South Africa," he said.

"It is great to see the attitude of the players, and what's also been great for me was I that was worried that I didn't have enough time before England, so I thought we could get at least one or two things in place."

Meyer, who replaced Peter de Villiers at the helm after the Springboks were eliminated in the quarter-finals of last year's Rugby World Cup, said he was impressed with the players' quick grasp of what was expected of them. He also commended the franchise coaches for the work they had done.

"We've covered a lot of things, a lot of theory, and getting onto the field the players were quick to understand what we want from them," Meyer said.

"That just shows you that back at their franchises there is a lot of coaching and I think a lot of our coaches have gone up another level in rugby intelligence.

"So I am very happy with the camp. It was a great experience."

The second Planning Camp will be held next week with players from the Bulls and the Sharks, who both have Super Rugby byes, while the third camp will take place in Cape Town with Stormers players in the first week of May.

The SA Rugby Union (SARU) has invited a total of 45 players from the Bulls and the Sharks to the second camp.

"The mere fact that the players didn't think twice about sacrificing their rest week to come up to Pretoria to plan for the season ahead, says a lot about the psyche of our players here in South Africa and it's something that I'm very happy with," Meyer said.

"I know we'll have the same vibe next week when the Sharks and Bulls players come together, as well as in Cape Town early in May when we work with the Stormers."

How positive must a coach feel about the future and we as the fans when reading such an article???

Definately looks hard to miss out LOL.

Based on the types of players selected I'd wager Stormers about 20 players for 3rd camp;

Steven Kitshoff, Brok Harris, Tiaan Liebenberg, Deon Fourie, Eben Etzebeth, Rynhardt Elstadt, Andries Bekker, De Kock Steenkamp, Schalk Burger, Siya Kolisi, Duane Vermeulen, Nick Koster, Dewald Duvenhage, Peter Grant, Jean de Villiers, Juan de Jongh, Gio Aplon, Bryan Habana, Joe Pietersen, Gerhard van den Heever

And now he's retired.

That'd be like Carl Hayman saying he's going to retire from international rugby - he was never going to get picked anyway, with Steyn, Goosen, Grant, Jantjies all ahead of them (plus some!).

maybe he stands a better chance of getting picked now since heyneke decided to chase after retired players.......
