The $30m (£18.6m) opening ceremony to launch the Cricket World Cup has begun in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

Jointly organised by the International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, it was officially opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A packed Bangabandhu National Stadium, not used for any World Cup matches, is the venue for the floodlit ceremony.

The more modern stadium in Mirpur hosts Saturday's tournament opener, in which Bangladesh host favourites India.

The often chaotic Dhaka roads witnessed relatively light traffic on Thursday with the government declaring a half-day public holiday so its people could return home in good time to view the opening ceremony on television.

It is the first time the country, which is slowly making a mark in world one-day cricket if not the five-day Test version, has helped stage the showpiece event which features eight matches in Bangladesh, 12 in Sri Lanka and 29 in India, including the 2 April final.

Bangladesh, whose first six matches will be in Mirpur and Chittagong, are enjoying their moment in the sporting spotlight.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mostafa Kamal said: "We will be able to improve our image if we can successfully hold the opening ceremony and host the World Cup matches slated for us."

Lots of late nights for me over the next two months.

Good to see us dismantling Kenya right now.

Just means every sod in Ireland will now start banging on how they've been lifelong cricket fans.

Na, we're not that bad. I'm not really a fan of cricket but it's nice to beat the Tans at their own game!

Wow, does anyone know what the odds of Ireland winning were before the game?

I always knew they would do it... I've been following them since their inception all those years ago... sure Don't I remember the days well when we had to use spuds as balls ...

Wait there is a CRICKET world cup when did this happen and how did Ireland qualify. Why is it in the same year as the RUGBY world cup disgrace. Great win though first time I've seen cricket come on the news and not groaned and turned over. Odds were 400 to one after Irelands first batsman went out.:D:D:D:D

I'd say that Eoin Morgan fella must be wondering what the hell he left Ireland to play for England and win but then this happens.
Jeez this is awkward :D

I don't get it...one match means Ireland are the best and England are the worst?

More to the point: One ashes series in test cricket and beating England in a 1-day event is suddenly worth something?
