Ireland World Cup 2019 Thread aka "Quarter Final 4"

I've not seen much of Kleyn but Toner is really not up to international rugby in any regard other than the lineout - I don't think you can carry the dead weight on the hope that the lineout functions.

Of course that does put a lot more pressure on the, admittedly, very shaky Iineout, however improves the pack in all other regards.
Toner hits rucks like a man possessed when on form, and is far from a liability in defence. It's wrong to say he's not an international class player.

The interesting part of this is that Rory Best is arguably more of a liability now.

Not saying I disagree with you but supposedly when I heard the rumour a few weeks ago it was that his stats were alarmingly decreasing and this is part of the reason.

Like a wet tissue, maybe.
Can't fault his effort but has zero noticeable impact/aggression.

Fair enough,
You, obviously, watch him a lot more than I do so are more in tune with what he brings to a side - I've just never rated him (outside the lineout).
To me he's just that tall lad at school that the coach convinces to play rugby/get in the 2nd row so he can jump higher than anyone else.

Biggest surprise is no place for Devin Toner. Luke McGrath getting in ahead of Kieran Marmion also raises an eyebrow.

EDIT - Leinster bias perhaps but I'd pick Toner ahead of Jean Kleyn.

So Addison rumour was wrong, the one I was most on board with, ah well.

Rory Best looking like every Ireland fan when they read his name on that list.

Toner hasn't been great but no world where Kleyn has earned a spot. He was picked for his size and position nothing else, which is harsh on a servant like Toner, but Toner also has very little impact from the bench. Can't say I trust Kleyn in a test match though.

Rory Best has a museum in his house dedicated to his own achievements, can't drop that.

I'd probably have taken Addison over Larmour based on the warm ups but it's clear that not much weight has been put on those games.

I reckon Carty v Byrne was the only one that was actually decided on them and they might have influenced Kilcoyne v McGrath but Kilcoyne was ahead there anyway.

Delighted with Ruddock's inclusion, huge potential for this tournament.

Jordi Murphy left Leinster to sign for Ulster to try get in the Ireland World Cup squad.
Jack McGrath left Leinster to sign for Ulster to try get in the Ireland World Cup squad.
John Cooney left Leinster via Connacht to sign for Ulster to try get in the Ireland World Cup squad.
Will Addison left Sale to sign for Ulster to try get in the Ireland World Cup squad.
Chris Farrell left Ulster via Grenoble to sign for Munster to try get in the Ireland World Cup squad.

Lesson: Don't sign for Ulster if you have international ambitions. Be like Chris Farrell and run away from the place.

I reckon Stuart Olding and Paddy Jack might disagree with you lad!

Hopefully Kleyn is the 4th option. I agree Toner hasn't had a great few weeks but has Kleyn? I'd pick Ultan Dillane ahead of him as he's abrasive and better around the field.

At least we know Joe Schmidt isn't afraid of making tough calls. It bodes well if the recognised first choice backrow continues underperforming.

Agreed completely he wasn't picked on form. He was picked on the virtue of being a brick shithouse with legs. I'd also prefer Dillane who was good last season, but I don't think Schmidt has much time for him now.
Also like that Schmidt has definitely flipped off the idea he's too loyal to players. I do hope Conan comes in.

The big thing Kleyn has over Dillane is his scrummaging and looking at Schmidt's comments that seems to be the main reason he's there. He wanted a specialist tighthead lock.

Aka Quinn Roux 2, Selection Boogaloo. I will say that for Kleyn he's a good scrummager by all accounts. To be honest his reasoning for Kleyn is clear. His reasoning for Marmion is a judgement call on who the better player is. Both must have been..... Awkward chats.

Exactly this. Schmidt explained it well when he said Kleyn was in because of squad balance and he is the only tighthead lock.

Also I note he mentioned Conway is the backup 15.

But at least they're top Shaggers though ;);)

Seriously though Paddy Jackson would be in this RWC squad
if he hadn't got himself involved with silly groupie chicks

Still he's getting paid well for London Irish
I wish both of them well desperate the Vindictive, Reactionary Morons on
