Is the 2021 Lions Tour Doomed?

Losing the invitational is disappointing - always find those kinda mish-mash games more fun

Sounds like there'll be no fans in attendance, which is a shame but expected
Yea but now we can see the Lions play the Lions instead and finally find out which is the better lion . All of our big four gets the chance to play, and at home while the Sharks need to come play the Lions in Joburg.

If there will be no fans i dont see why we could not have moved the games to small indoor arenas with closed roofs and crazy lighting and smoke effects and lasers and more AWJ holographics powered by huge projectors. That would have been nice.

Bit of a decifit to overcome from the last time. For some reason the quick interview with two Golden Lions fans saying that the B&I Lions had no chance on the documentary has been stuck in my mind.

The Times reporting the BIL asking if 37 man Lions squad and presumably the coaching staff, medical etc if not done so already, if they can have a special dispensation to be vacccinated before they go.

A tight bubble and regular testing whilst out there would mean not having to quarantine on return. A no brainier really.

I assume the South Africa are hoping for some crowds (50%) as otherwise what is the point in moving both games to FNB Stadium which has a capacity of 94,000. If they can get 47,000 x 2 then that will be a result as Loftus Versfeld only holds 52,000.

That's the thinking yes.

I think we will know more as we get closer to June, as we start our Vaccination process today, with the people over 60 being vaccinated from today. I guess the thinking is dependant on how the roll-out goes, and how this presumable third wave is being handled. Seems like Gauteng and the Free State is experiencing a big case of increased numbers being infected.

So not getting to 70% vaccinated until well after the BIL tour has ended. UK still at around 55% and that's who have received their first jab. 20million who have received both and that is 1/3 adults.

In that case it should be held behind closed doors and no crowds.

Well, we don't know the extent of the distribution yet, so many companies are getting on board now, and the big pharmacy chains just gotten their approval to administer the vaccine all over the country.

Plus, we don't have the 2-jab vaccine, Just 1 jab and you're done.

I have zero idea how you can optimistic other than blind faith, in terms of one dose vaccine rollout the UK has the 2nd best population % done in the world and has been going for 6 months. SA has barely administered anything and your expecting with a similar population to do better than that in 2 months. Every time I hear about SA rollout it looks even less likely than previous time you'll be anywhere close.

That of course won't stop their being crowds I full expect there to be some reckless announcement.

The issue isn't that we have a lack of medicine, the issue is the approval of distribution.

Because we are one of the countries with the highest HIV/AIDS, when it comes to anything with a needle or injections, we have to take precautionary steps. Our local vaccine factory can currently produce 1 million vaccine doses daily, The matter is the distribution and the injecting of people with it.

I remain optimistic.

Obviously I'd like people in the stadiums, even though it would only be South Africans, but it's not happening.

This, along with SA being undercooked, are the biggest advantages the lions have and why I'm still optimistic even with a few dodgy selection calls and North's injury.

Dischem will be selling the Phizer- BioNTech vaccine as they are the only ones capable of handling the cold storage, so while South Africa has not set out any framework where people can choose what vaccine they get, they can basically force the choice by going to a Dischem, the BioNtech vaccine is the only one i would be willing to take. So this is one case where a part of our population will probably need two doses. It will cost R61 per dose. I was right in my prediction that the private sector would push government aside and just get things done, but at the cost of the middle and upper class who has to pay for the admin fee of their injection. (Very cheap though)

Government will rollout the J&J vaccine.

I would have said they play at different stadiums as it reduces the need to deep clean all the seats and facilities after a game. Spread it out dont force everyone to the same place.

This pandnemic keeps on bringing out the hypocrisy in governments worldwide.

You are a complete fool, get any vaccine they will give you. Anyone doing otherwise I have even more choice words for....
I anticipated such a comment. We all have the right to discretion regarding the situation. Im by no means an anti vaxxer. Infact i encourage my family and friends who are at a higher risk factor to go for it whenever available.
Im not getting into the ethics of the conversation.

Why does your governement not administer the Sputnik vaccine? Would you protest their decision and make it available to all UK citizens if possible ?

Yup everyone has the right to be an complete idiot doesn't not make them one though.

The issue is two entirely separate problems,

We have standards that require a vaccine be safe to use on the general populace (these are the same standards that apply through the EU) once approval has been met get whatever vaccine. If you think approval processes were rushed or corners cut you obviously don't know enough scientists.

The other is we have socialised medicine in this country the NHS has managed secure a supply of AZ, Pfizer and Moderna that covers 3.6x the population. As such they were the first ready and thus went through approval processes first. I'm sure if Sputnik was 'ready' we'd be using that to but it wasn't so its a completely moot point.

The overwhelming medical opinion is get a vaccine when offered one, they are safe, far better than getting COVID-19 and don't pay too much attention to which one your being offered. And if you are against that you're an idiot no matter how well informed you think you are because your clearly not.

I can understand someone maybe wanting to pay more for a higher efficacy vaccine if they can afford it, thats fair enough I think? As long as everyone's getting one, then great, and ASAP to limit the mutation opportunities
Get one done though, and dont be too picky, because even though J&J is meant to be slightly less effective at preventing you getting the vaccine, it still drastically reduces chances of it doing damage (and can speak of at risk people, but some of the long covid effects on younger friends of mine are horrific)

I'm fully in socialised medicine FTW, get what your given camp. Giving people a choice creates problems we experienced some reports in the UK with people not getting the "British one".

However yes if you do have a choice or paying for a better one by all means go for it if thats a choice. The overall message should be get one and if you aren't getting one because it isn't your choice vaccine then your an absolute tool.

Agreed

would love the chance to get one

Aus stopped administering tha AZ one to those under 50 and although we do have some Pfizer we're not expecting the majority of the shipments until later in the year (see earlier our discussion about the EU)....we're only doing about 2000 people a day, current estimate is 2023 before everyone will have two shots

I would opt in for the AZ one if i could what ive read suggests blood clot risk is still lower than the contraceptive pill

Actually, not just Dischem will be the administer of the vaccine, Clicks has also been approved, and they have now also appliead that an additional 500 of their stores all over the country also be allowed to administer the vaccine than the original 475 they got approval for.

You won't get a choice of which vaccine you will be getting though. I receive daily mails from my health insurance on the roll-out, and since my dad is over 60, and one of the first people who will be getting a vaccine, he also gets similar info.

The message he got from the National COVID-19 site where you have to register is that they will assign a day and an area for you to get vaccinated, you then have an option of which facility to go to, and then provide them with your ID and other registration details. And then they administer the vaccine.

Obviously, the choice of facility will determine the type of the vaccine you will be getting.

Miles lower... and actually studies shown its not linked, I think the reason its blown up in people are scared of what they don't understand, and as such this vaccine does scare them especially with all the misinformation. I had AZ and typically been shown to have sightly more cold like side effect's for a couple of days, that's it
