Googling suggests that Jake Jacobs (Herbert Percy Jacobs, 1902-1996) is the same Jake Jacobs mentioned here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_England_national_rugby_union_players

Seems he made his mark in the 1920s as a rugby player of note, in particular with a feat not equalled again until 1980:

"he then scored the first hat-trick by an England player since Herbert Jacob achieved the feat against France in 1924. " from
http://www.sporting-heroes.net/rugby-heroes/displayhero.asp?HeroID=5759

My interest in him is not related to rugby. I'm wondering if he's the same Herbert Jacob who married a cousin of my grandfather's, a gal with the last name Nolan. She was born (of Irish parents) in Essex in 1901, and brough up in Elham, Kent. She married a HJ in 1929.

A 1985 letter from her sister to a relative in Ireland suggests that the couple in question had just emigrated (at an advanced age, with a son) to Canada. The rugby player HJ seems to have died in Australia in 1996, which is a bit confusing:)

If anyone knows were I can find out if the famous rugby player was married, and if so to whom, or where any of his descendants can be found, I'm very interested. This may help to establish whether "my" HJ is the famous rugby player HJ for one thing.

Thanks!

Herbert Percy 'Jake' Jacob did marry Eileen Nolan at Hythe in 1929 and then taught at Cranleigh School in Surrey (where he was also educated) until 1960. From there he spent some time as secretary of Blackheath Golf Club. I believe they emigrated to Canada and then when Eileen died he moved to a suburb of Perth to be near his daughter Mrs Susan Dechow. If you need any more details please contact me.
