Hi folks,
How in your opinion can the maul be fixed/improved ? It's currently a big discussion point in the rugby world and has been for a while. The maul as it's moving is basically legalised obstruction.

So, how do we fix it ?

Next you will want to get rid of scrums................

The only thing "wrong" is when a choke tackle becomes a maul as this is pretty negative play. Other than that there is nothing wrong with it and it is integral to the game

uh what ? if you've read anything i've written on the forum, you would know i'm a massive fan of the scrum.

Not it's not, because it's a maul.

The maul is fine.

The choke tackle isn't.

I'm not sure what you mean? To me it doesn't seem illegal, and if holding it up because you want to start a maul is your tactic then it seems to work.

I would like to see "truck and trailer"/split mauls more strictly policed/banned, but other than that...

it's the responsibility of the ball carrier to get themselves into a position to control the contact area... you can't blame people for keeping them up when for decades people have been told to stay on their feet in the contact and now people are exploiting it.

I think a slightly more annoying point is that the team going forward don't get the put in, which is wrong imho.

I didn't mean to say it was illegal, but that it needs fixing.

When there are 5-6 choke tackles in a game it can be very dull.

I think that mauls formed in open play (choke tackles) should become rucks when they hit the ground, requiring all players to roll away.
Therefore in order to profit from choke tackling, you need to keep the opposition up and halt their momentum.

It does, if the ball is presentable a ruck is called... the issue is the ball carrier gets themselves in a bad position and the ball gets wallowed, why should the tackling side be penalised for exploiting bad body position?

The ball won't be presentable if the players aren't required to roll away... just as if they weren't in the tackle.
The defending team should not in any way be encouraged to simply lie on the ball.

They should only be rewarded for keeping the tackled player up and halting momentum - as they currently are.

The trouble is that it is actually quite easy to hold people up in the tackle, the choke tackle encourages players to go to ground before the tackle.

Maul talk eh?

Mauls aren't a thing that needs looking at, except perhaps as someone said, refs calling more truck and trailer.

it's easy to hold people up if you don't dominate contact - we don't see a lot of it in the SH so for me the issue isn't the choke but the negative mindset and poor technical skills of the NH players in the contact area.

Don't hate us cos you ain't us. Mauls and choke tackles now and always.
