Melbourne Rebels

What’s happening to super rugby then? Is it working but investment has gone from the rebels or are they being replaced?

I don’t really follow SR so no idea what’s going on but it’s always a shame to lose a club.

I have no idea and this announcement appears to me completely out of the blue, I had no idea they were in danger of losing their license. I'm hoping someone on here can shed some light on what is going on down there.

you're living under a rock then mate ;) been rumours for over a year and almost guaranteed for 6 months or more, they've been in administration for months. I think its $18M in debt and NO plans to pay it back. Even the bail bid some people tried to put together.....included a huge operating loss they expected RA to cover...dreaming

as someone whole has got involved in club rugby in Melbourne...a professional rugby team in Melbourne (if only a reason for the highlanders to come an play) will be missed.... the rebels wont be though as they never really even tried to connect with Melbourne other than the youth grade teams, @TRF_Olyy you reason to follow them is part of what killed them from the start, local guys in Melbourne that though they had a pathway suddenly saw almost a whole team of international or at least interstate people come in...was doomed to fail

very heavy rumours that the Jaguars will come back in, talk of it already being a done deal and so RA didnt have much motivation to try and keep saving the Rebels, less cost having 4 teams....and a better product for a new broadcast deal with a better team coming in...aussie talent gets redistributed to the other 4 teams...and a wider international market to sell too

i take from this you want Australian rugby to not exist?
I’m perfectly fine with it existing. I just think that Australia has a vastly outsized influence in the game and the longer we continue to placate to them the harder it will be to grow the game in the rest of the world.

So if given the choice between letting it die or changing the game completely to keep them happy I’d happily let it die.

They are basically the MAGA of rugby: the game was better in the past, we are the victims of a culture war, do as we say or else we’ll throw a tantrum.

you're going to have to elaborate, whats driving that feeling? in what way do they have an outsized influence on the game?

i think there is a big different between the global players and what they are trying to achieve with things like rules changes....and the negative impact of a domestic teams going bust, seems a bit petty

Oh it’s extremely petty.

And I do feel for Melbourne fans since rugby australia mismanagement had cost them a team.

But my larger point is that rugby australia refuses to look at internal factors for their shortcomings and instead looks outside. Right now it has just cost them 20% of their professional domestic player base and a marketing arm for the game somewhere where they need to grow the game.

Maybe instead of “mission accomplished” I should have used “what will happen cause rugby australia refuses to get its head out of its ass”

thats where you're letting you surprising vitriol against RA cloud your understanding a bit, RA only stepped in when the club went into administration, was privately run under licence before that.

The Rebels board are solely to blame for not paying their bills, all RA has done is revoke the licence after it became clear how much of a hole they were in

I’m sure I’m the here and now it’s the right business decision but you have to look at how we got here.

Years of ******** on the game and organizational incompetence has done nothing to help the rebels/force.

And it’s not just not rugby Australia the corporate body, it’s thr australian rugby media who whine about the state of the game every chance they get. Do they expect people to try out a sport when all they hear is that it was better back in the 90s using fake stats about ball in play time and penalty counts?

Much of the rugby media that whine about the state of the game are Murdoch hacks whose bosses are bitter that they lost broadcasting rights

Yeah what? The Stan sport team seem pretty rugby positive, compared to sky NZ media anyway. The latter continually, for years, whine about how league is better and scrums and mauls suck, then complain the game isn't more popular when they're causing it. How about having some scrum analysis on your shows instead of just saying scrums suck, it is part of the game after all. I don't know why people that don't like the game are involved in it.

They talk about wanting more ball in play time but American football is popular, and soccer football to me is pretty boring to watch
