I see that some competitions applies the 22-men squad, 25-men squad, 28-men squad and I think one even has a 36-men squad (french top 14 I think). As you can see, this raises a question in me. Officially, what is the number of players in a squad should be?

Thanks in advance.

i would think it depends on the teams strengths/weaknesses, i like a 34 man would be perfect but also trying to fit in a perfect number off players for each position like if the team has a weakness in the forwards then call more forwards up and if there is problems with the backs then call more backs up etc. but as i said the forwards/backs should have an even number and a fair number too

Yeah, France even issued a 75-man group recently. It's because we're so bad we figured we could have a chance with 75 men on the pitch, but I can't speak for those other figures...

What do you mean by squad?

The number of players who play in a single game is 23.

Malaysia boleh. For me, 200 player oso can.

15 men start with 8 on the bench as probable/possible replacements so a matchday playing squad is 23 throughout. For tournaments like the Rugby world cup the squads are either 30 or 31 (still only 23 play per match but you need replacements in case of injury or to alternate players between different games) now recently allowing for an extra specialist prop for safety reasons. Other than that a club or nation can have as big a squad- usually seperated into an 'elite' and 'extended' or senior and junior section- as they deem necessary. The French tend to have bigger club squads than South African teams do but they play a lot more games as well so there is no hard and fast rule as such.

but he mean't training squad i think he would know its 23 players a game for one team

Yes I meant that. Sorry that I didn't clarify that in the first place.

So a squad consist of 30 or 31 players. Can a squad be able to have less than that?

They can have as many as they like as long as they have at least 23 - the only limit would be the relevant salary cap in most domestic competitions.

I think the European competitions have a number cap, and Super rugby possibly does as well.

I see. Thank you for the information.

The European comps have actually to name the players as well, not just a number where you can interchange; and if there are injuries to said named players permission is needed to replace them with others, also named.

It's only a matter of time. Rugby in my is still considerably under-developed but we'll get there.

When I was studying in Dublin there were a group of Malaysians that played rugby. Ended up going on a sevens tournament as a Malaysian team with them (I'm half so they managed to squeeze me in!). It was great fun and we did pretty well. There's definitely a growing interest in rugby. I'm temporarily staying in Malaysia at the moment and it's great to see all the Rugby Championship, Top 14, Super 15, and even the under 20s world cup was on TV here. The only pity is I can't watch the Pro 12 :(. But yeah, definitely an interest here!

Great to know! But there's no longer any live coverage of top 14 tho, only replays and they're inconsistent :/

I guess it would be difficult to fit in live coverage of every league or tournament. Luckily I don't watch much French rugby hehe. Anyway, good to see a Malaysian on the forum!!

The league I play in only uses 22 for game day squad. It doesn't usually matter since we rarely have 22 guys available, but once or twice a year when we have the numbers it would be nice to have that extra spot.
