I think you are really missing the broader point here and that the sport is played for entertainment.

Not at the top level it isn't. It's all about money and results.

There has to be a degree of entertainment (whatever that means) to attract spectators, sponsors and media. But fundamentally professional sport is the most results driven business there is.

Spectators = Good Business. Sponsors and Media follow the spectators. If it's not entertaining, people don't watch. The knock on effect is in full-flow in Australia. Rugby is about to go under as it can't draw a crowd.

You could potentially draw a causal link between good results and more spectators but i don't think this is as black and white.
