wahoo ----- Warne in frame as Black Caps get wish 10 January 2005 By ALEX BROWN Responding to an urgent call for assistance from New Zealand following the withdrawal of the tsunami-affected Sri Lankans, Cricket Australia has cleared Shane Warne and five other Australians to join a World XI for three one-day internationals against the Black Caps later this month. Warne, who will play in his first one-dayer since the 2002/03 season tonight in the tsunami benefit match, will play along side fellow Australians Michael Bevan, Justin Langer, Andy Bichel, Ian Harvey and Matthew Elliott in the series against New Zealand. So as to minimise the impact on the players' respective state sides, CA yesterday announced the extraordinary step of rescheduling a round of Pura Cup matches to accommodate the one-day games against the Black Caps. The inclusion of the Australians in the composite side will help New Zealand Cricket to stem its financial losses after Sri Lanka's withdrawal. The Lankans played just one limited-overs international in New Zealand before the tsunami struck and they returned home to care for injured relatives and rebuild damaged property. The tour was to comprise three Tests and five one-dayers. It remains unlikely that the New Zealand-World XI matches will be granted official limited-overs status, eroding the Black Caps' hopes of finishing atop the one-day international table and hosting a full-strength world side in a three-match series in October. But with the likes of Warne, Bevan and Langer poised to play across the Tasman, at least NZC will recoup some losses, the Black Caps will receive some stern competition before Australia's arrival and the local cricket public will have a series to attend. For Warne, the matches will continue his re-emergence on the one-day international scene, following his participation in tonight's tsunami charity match. And for Bevan, Langer, Bichel and Harvey, the Black Caps encounter represents an opportunity to show up the national selectors who have effectively terminated their ODI careers. The three games in New Zealand will be played on January 22, 24 and 26. Pura Cup games have been pushed back from January 27-30 to January 28-31. stuff.co.nz
