One For The Clever Bonces - Charities With Shares/Equity

I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to understanding charities (I usually am just happy to give a few pennies here and there), but I am curious as to where the distinction between a charity or charitable cause and a more 'business driven charity model' is.

Having donated to a cancer cause for many years, I have since been told that this cause files with Companies House and that it has shares (and no doubt share capital).

Now, I am not saying it is wrong, but I thought that charities were usually set up so that monies went in and were spent where the needed to be with some being retained for operational purposes?

It might just be the recent charity scandals, and I may just be being cynical, but is it right that a charity can have shares and share capital? Only, that sounds more like it is being run as a business than a wholly altruistic cause.
